Luanshya Miners take to the streets

Share

Former miners at Luanshya Copper mines staged a peaceful demonstration on Monday to press Government to quickly open the closed mine.

The former workers marched from Mpatamatu to the central business district demanding to be addressed by Government officials.

They wanted government to give them a specific date as to when a new investor will take over the running of the mine.

Addressing the demonstrators, Luanshya district commissioner, George Kapu, reassured them that government is actively pursuing the issue of reopening the mine.

And Roan member of parliament, Chishimba Kambwili, said the people of Luanshya want the mine to be re-open soon.

And he Gemstone and Allied Workers Union of Zambia has lost more than 1,400 members due to the global economic melt down.

Union president, Sifuniso Nyumbu says the price of Emeralds and other precious stones have fallen forcing most companies to reduce on its workforce.

Mr. Nyunmba has however commended government for facilitating the joining of the Zambia Gemstone Industry into the Extractive Industry Transparent Initiative.

Mr. Nyumbu told znbc news in interview that the development will help to minimize the rate of smuggling of Zambia’s precious stones.

He said Zambia has a lot of precious stones in the countryside but most of it is smuggled out of the country.

  1. Yaba Luanshya in the news for the wrong reason. yaba. This is very bad, ba LT this is old news should have come out yetserday why today.

  2. Now let me address Miners in Luanshya. Luanshya has had very bad investors running it, they have failed to improve it from Binani to J & W. The writting was on the wall for sometime. When Barclays Bank gave out unsecured loans, Miners in Luanshya got money. What did they use it on? Cars and other non productive ventures Including drinking. Now the Mine paid them off before closing which is at least commendable than dumping them like Binani, now because they got loans & most of them squandered it, the bank has decided to recover it hence hitting them hard!!! This has further fueled the discontent we are seeing. The inpact could have been less if they had invested the loan money.

    • The problems surrounding Luanshya mine are well known. From the time of Cameron Pwele to date. Pehaps one real question to be asked is whether there is really a profitable mineral deposit down there? Of course, the mineral is a depleting asset. The mine was given a life boost after the discovery of further deposits at Muliashi (spelling?) but one wonders whether all this was enough to sustain the entire mine. Are there still enough deposits down there? why are the investors too quick to pull out? Miners will realise that once these petinent questions are answered, greener pastures will be sought. May God bless our only mother Zambia

    • The only problem is there are less greener pastures in Zambia. Most companies shedding off labour massive retrenchments going on. A population of 12m Zambians only less than 350,000 are in gainful employment (permanant). This is a sad picture. To diversify, they need programs to fine tune and change their mindset. Luanshya pipo just given money no program to help them plan+bank loans deduction for the money they squandered. It’s a catch 22.

  3. Rum Breweries has clearly failed the people. This circus in Zambia. has gone far enough. The poor miners are going through hell on earth as this is their only means of income. Meanwhile Rusty Brute is busy protecting wrong-doers like Dora Siliya. Toadface needs to put his priorities in order.

  5. Two weeks ago I almost shed tear when I saw on Tv How this mine has been ripped off.I really dont understand why our govt allows these investors to exploin us.No country can allow investors to resume operations without the without them(investors) rehabilitate the infrastructures. Its like our country had now been turned into a business I will call prostitution. One can get a prostitute sleep with her/him then after enjoying the services the prostitute is left alone. That is exactly what is happening in our country.,the investors come and after makin money abo bayenda. And its like our govt cant see this, but at the end of it all pipo like these miners are the ones affected. My condolences miners.
