Sata, others hail law enforcement agencies

Share

PATRIOTIC Front (PF) leader, Michael Sata and other stakeholders have hailed the three law enforcement agencies for instituting investigations into the suspended Zambian Airways.

In a letter addressed to acting Police Inspector General, Francis Kabonde, acting Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Director General, Rosewyn Wandi, and acting Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) Commissioner, Solomon Jere, Mr Sata said their joint move was unprecedented.

“I would like on behalf of the central committee, the general membership of our party, the silent Zambian majority and indeed on my own behalf to commend you on the action you have taken,” he said in his letter yesterday.

And welcoming the investigations, Federation Democratic Party president, Alfred Sayila commended the criminal investigative wings for coming together on the matter.

Mr Sayila said in a statement in Lusaka that it was good that the Government did not entertain the idea of bailing out the embattled airline as a result of its indebtedness.

“We welcome the institution of investigations into the financial dealings of Zambian Airways and right from the start, we maintained that the Government should not use public funds to bail out some parastatal organisations,” he said.

Youth and Students Movement national coordinator, Tobias Kafumukache said Zambian Airways should pay back the US$30 million to benefit the youth and other citizens.

Mr Kafumukache said in an interview in Lusaka that the money that Zambia Airways owed the public institutions could take the country to another level of development.

“Zambian Airways should pay back that money because youths need to be empowered. As youths we need that money back, failure to that it is to deny us and those people out in rural areas our empowerment,” he said.

Mr Kafumukache said the youth wanted to commend President Banda for speaking for the people of Zambia on the issue of the airline’s indebtedness.

  1. If this is the way they behave when dealing with the issue of rigging of election I would have commended the three wings but not in this manner. let God help them.

    • You will never find absolute justice not even in america, the richer you are the more your are likely to get away with murder on a reasonable doubt. So do not cheat yourselves people that day will never come not in yourlife time.

  2. So many companies have gone down in Zambia…and they have investigated none. Africa commercial Bank under Ruphia Directorship went down with the money of poor Zambia ..it was not investigated by these biased ACC, etc. Its really sad that the law is being applied selectively in Zambia. Shame on you Zambian that you are fighting corruption selectively. Shame.

  3. If Zambian Airways did anything unlawful, let them pay. Most Zambians think the going down of Zambian Airways is a victory but it’s actually a blow to local entrepreneurship.Debt is normal in business as businesses do not grow to make profits overnight. The Zambia Airways issue has been politicised. The cheap behaviour by govt on this issue will not only discourage local but also foreign direct investment.SOMEONE TELL ME HOW BIG COMPANIES IN ZED OR THE WORLD THAT HAVE NO DEBT

  4. Zambians will one day regret how the issue of Zambian airways has been handled. How can a company pay back its debt if you allow it to close and apply political pressure on it?If the govt wants to get back the money Zed airways owes, they should encourage the airline to get back on its feet, make profits and then use the profits to pay back the debt.

    • Our president may not actually be a bad man personally but the problem is that he has surrounded himself with bad company. No wonder such good advice can never get to his heart because it like a drop in the ocean. R.B pleged allegency 2 the corrupt influential figures of MMD in exchange 4 the MMD presidential cadidancy after the death of our legendary president Levy.Zambia is doomed if R.B continues after 2011 elections…God bless mother Zambia

  5. No. 7! You are very right; only that cannot happen because RB has personal interest in this issue. For sure he wants to punish Mmembe and the Nchito. This, he feels, is his golden chance.

  6. Lets wait and see where this zambina Airways politicised saga is going to end, for as long as there is serious deficiency in all judcial proceedings coupled with corruption, i can assure every one that this saga is not going anywhere it will just die a naturally death. Let justice prevail we need serious people to run our Government.

  7. You did nnot go further in your article to talk about Sata’s suggestion that RB sholud also be probe for his bank which collapsed.

  8. The financial institutions that lent Zambian Airways the money should also be brought to book for irresponsible lending practices. After all, they should have studied the company’s books and credit worthiness instead of lending blindly. They have only themselves to blame for incurring bad debts.

  9. Has any of the directors declared themselves bankrupt? If not they should have tried to rescue the company with their personal resources and seek bail out. Im sure if we had a yard sales from their properties they would be able to raise at least half of what they are asking for.

  10. The investigations must be Ruthlessly fair, we dont want the NyamaSoya pre-determined outcome. Impartiality, thoroughness and competence must be exibited during the investigations.

  11. Fred wanted a fight, now he’s got one. Let him payback as he had borrowed. Zambian airways used to make money but their lack of remittance to Airport authority alone tells of the greed the airline directors had. They preferred to eat the money rather than to pay.
