Share

The Environment and Development in Zambia (EDZ), a non profit making organization has estimated that 80 per cent of the poor people in Northwestern province have become even poorer because they were heavily disadvantaged.

Kabompo EDZ assistant coordinator Jenipher Nyambe disclosed this to ZANIS during the Kabompo district beekeeping stakeholders meeting held at Sombo Guest House yesterday.

Ms. Nyambe said EDZ had estimated that 92 per cent of the 720 000 people in North-western province were, out of which 80 per cent were unable to meet basic nutritional needs.

Ms. Nyambe said most women in North-western province were highly disadvantaged and wallowing in extreme poverty, forcing them to heavy depend on men and extended relatives.

She said illiteracy levels were also very high in the district.

  1. Ba Moze, those in power will always take advantage of the poor, i.e. ensure that they remain poor with little access to infor, edu, and other resources so that they are given handouts during campaigns and they vote blindly. The policy is, keep the poor poor or even poorer so that they cant decide and think independently and remain in power

  2. #4 Your are right on the money. That is African politics of poverty for you. Especially depriving the poor education. Isn’t that vocal chap Teta something from this region and has he not been a politician for over tens years representing this region? And what does he have to show for his tenure. I guess making his people more poorer. Zambians be alert and know the true leaders.

  3. the whole nation is poor except for a few pot bellied upper mwamba’s who intertain chinese and other foreign so called investors for champagne breakfast and dinner dances beause they bring in money to be able to loot more than they brought in

  4. Tetamashimba and the rest of the gang of politicians are just opportunists and bootlickers who will never ever have progressive plans for developing that region. They are just interested in giving people chibuku and kachasu during election campaigns. In the end these politicians concentrate on filling their pockets and their ugly potbellies.

  5. On the illiteracy levels being low in Northwestern Province, this is a sad fact which we have to accept and then endeavour to reverse. I am happy that Lumwana mine has already shown serious concern in this area by sponsoring a big number of school children as reported on LT some few days ago. I am just asking others to emulate Lumwana mine to help give an opportunity to all Zambians to have at least a Grade 12 level education.

On “Ms. Nyambe said EDZ had estimated that 92 per cent of the 720 000 people in North-western province were, out of which 80 per cent were unable to meet basic nutritional needs”, the sentence is incomplete and not making enough sense, LT. I hope this will b…

  6. Those are the benefits of voting MMD and RB overwhelmingly. This is a Tenta bone to chew. Probably that will teach them not to follow blindly.

  7. 99 percent of the Zambian population is getting poorer, infact it has been since independence. Wow then we brought UNIP back. Reason why KK made all those trips to the Banda’s house, lets pray for our country. Banda and cronies came back, Sangomas begin to visit again. Kaunda’s heaven on earth in effect again, by all means we need to pray for God to help us fight at the polls against this scurge.

  8. Point of correction. This calamity is not only in North Western province. Its the whole Zambia. ITS ZUNGULILA ZAMBIA.

  9. These people are lazy. They have very good and fertile land which remains uncultivated. The problem with them is that they trust politicians more than themselves. They believe in the politicians changing their lives. It is good that with the infiltration of people from other parts of Zambia, some of them have started changing and have confessed their poor altitude towards development and education.

  10. …………it is just idio….cy ,greed and me first attitude among politicians. It has got nothing to do with the people of the area. Poverty is countrywide, including lsk. U can sit on crude riches but if one has on capital to extract it and refine it , riches won’t be seen. RB was chosen for being a better devil not that he can deliver. THE CAUSE OF POVERTY IN AFRICA IS POOR LEADERSHIP AT ALL LEVELS INCLUDING HOUSEHOLDS.

  11. HOW CAN THERE BE DEVLEOPMENT WHEN PIPO ARE BUSY FIGHTING THEM SELVES.AND THOSE WHO REPRESENT THE SAME PIPO ARE REPRESNTING THEMSELVES.
