A 21-year old man of Chiwaya village in Kapiri-Mposhi has been killed by two stray elephants.
Zambia Wild Life Authority (ZAWA) Officer-In-Charge, Paul Kashoti, confirmed the incident to ZANIS in an interview this morning.
Mr Kashoti said the elephants came from Luano village via Mashata route where they had been displaced due to excessive poaching.
He said the deceased, identified as Katongowe Chiwaya, was a grade nine pupil at one of the schools in Chiwaya village and was attacked on his way from school while other villages managed to escape.
Mr Kashoti said he and other ZAWA officers went to the scene and where but could not find the elephants.
He said according to the footprints the elephants had returned to the valley but unfortunately his office received a message from Likumbi village indicating that the elephants were in that village and are heading towards Mkushi district.
The Officer-In-Charge has since appealed to the people in the nearby villages to move in groups and avoid loitering carelessly until the situation is settled.
He further warned the villagers against poaching, saying excessive poaching led to displacement of animals.

What is going on with our wild animals these days? These wont chew humans but just satmpedes them to death…scary indeed
SAd indeed. Why was he still in grade nine at 21?
All the same. M.H.S.R.I.E.P.
May he rest in peace, but why are we blaming the animals for something that has clearly likely been caused by human activity,if you have read the article properly it says the animals had been displaced due to poaching and were most likely very agitated…
And number 2 there is no law against being in grade nine at age 50,90…or whatever age you can think of,people have different learning abilities as well as other underlying causes that may result in them not going to school when expected, I don’t know why we like to laugh at people…
I agree with you Musenga Faith Phiri, there is no need to laugh at someone doing grade nine at 21 years. Just because we had better opportunities to succed educationwise than other people is not a guarantee to look down on others. For the elephants, government officials should learn to take care of world animals so that they don’t become a danger to the people.
Lo siento! His soul rest in peace indeed. Those foul beasts must die.
May his soul rest in eternal peace. This story has highlighted another sad issue of our education system. This man was only in grade 9 at the age of 21. And I don’t sense any mockery from number 2’s statement, I think it is a question that needs to be addressed seriously. There are a lot of people who are lagging behind in education due to poverty etc. The government needs to put measures in place to allow everyone an opportunity to start school at an early age, have enough resources in place to avoid ‘repeating grades’ and open vocational routes for those who struggle academically
Only human beings are a problem to wild life and not vise versa.
very sad
Poaching is still going on? What’s the point of all these organisations if they can’t stem the vice.
tekuti afwa no kufwa. 21 years in grade 9. Awe bane. Am sure little girls at his school were in trouble. who knows may be God decided to punish him for some wrong he committed in some area of life but associated with being too old to be in grade 9 with 13 year old girls.
