Education minister Professor Geoffrey Lungwangwa says government is committed in improving infrastructure in higher learning institution.

Professor Lungwangwa said yesterday after touring various constructions that are taking place at Mulungushi University in Kabwe.

The Professor said government has planned for 106 billion for the entire completion of the construction-taking place at Mulungushi University.

” In last year’s budget government allocated 30 billion and 20 billion this year for the construction of student’s hostels, a dinning hall, library, lecture theatre, and a kitchen, ” he said.

He said he was happy with how fast the construction works were moving and was looking forward to the completion of all the works.

Professor Lungwangwa said education is one of government’s top priorities; government has taken steps to improve education by making sure more children are enrolled and recruitment of teachers is done.

He said there was now an increase in the number of students awarded bursaries from 600 to 1000 students being given bursaries.

And Mulungushi University Vice Chancellor Professor Vernon Chinene said the University was operating under a cost sharing arrangements between government and students.

“Government’s main contribution is mainly in infrastructure development in which it has committed k50 billion in 2008 and 2009 budgets and the contribution of students is in tuition and boarding fees, ” he said.

Professor Chinene said since the inception 16 months ago Mulungushi University has engaged more than a dozen contractors to rehabilitate existing infrastructure and construct new infrastructure.

” The new infrastructure includes an ultra-modern library, lecture theatre, dining hall, a kitchen, and 4x3storey student hostels, ” he said.

Professor Chinene also said the recruitment of academic, administrative, professional, and support staff had concluded with a total of 230 members of staff having been recruited.

“They include 110 from the former National College for Management and Development studies and 120 new staff which includes five at professorial level,” the Professor said.

Professor Chinene says the University will this year concentrate on farming.

He said the University wants to concentrate on farming so that it will be able to feed its students.

Professor Chinene said K 500 million has been put aside for the investment of the farm.

He the University will concentrate on improving agriculture food production for its students and staff members, instead of buying food elsewhere.

He also said the University was rehabilitating some sports fields at the University.

So far the basketball, netball, and volley ball courts have been completed and are only remaining with the football and tennis court.

  1. its about time… the problem with lungwagwa is that he has a math problem, kaya how the summation of the cost for the developement of Higher learning institution’s infrastructure was done

  2. what BS is this the university will conctrate on farming ??how i thought you go to be taught is it ging to be afarming school or what i do not understand. sounds more like another reformatory instead of an institution if higher learning. 230 memebers of staff with only five at professional level? to teach at a university? Yaba!! is that we are dull or what?

  3. There goes another song,Please lets stop talking we need action,If one went to CBU or Unza nothing much has changed in terms of infrastructure in last 18 years. All one will see is the deplorable state of the infrastructure.Lets be serious mwebuteko bushe ifintu fikachijapo, twa naka naimwe bakeleka.

  4. sort out the mess at unza first (it has mainly been financial issues) before you can venture in mulungushi university

  5. Mulungushi the Up-coming University with a difference. So much has happened within a few years. Congrats Prof. Chinene and your team.

  6. Great stuff MMD GRZ. On “Professor Chinene says the University will this year concentrate on farming. He said the University wants to concentrate on farming so that it will be able to feed its students. Professor Chinene said K 500 million has been put aside for the investment of the farm.”, this is great but look to investors running companies to sponsor students and projects there.

Such must be done for UNZA and CBU including the other 3 colleges or so to be upgraded to university status.

Thank you and all the best.

  7. Ba Muzo na mu bayela iyikali sana, ka?
Anyway, we all know education is the key. The govt is on the right track.

  8. This is encouraging. I hope it is true. The problem in Zambia is that Vice-Chancellors are paid for doing almost nothing. They should find out from their colleagues in say SA why their universities are not cash-strapped. The SA VCs really work. They engage financial institutions and research organisations both within the country and abroad for funding. This is how a number of Chairs and serous researches in SA universities are funded by companies. There is a lot of money out there waiting to be used. Unfortunately Zambian VCs are sleeping on the job and now one of them wants to turn his university into farm. He thinks he is running a ZNS Production Unit. I feel sorry for Zambia.

  9. I think you are slacking seriously.

    LUSAKA TIMES

Can you get vigilant and remove the rubbish on #10. I cant believe you are allowing such nonsense to go on.

Now back to the topic at hand …erm…….. sorry whats the topic bane please?

  11. Its amazing how people wont give credit were its due, comments like #4 were people wont appreciate the little that this corrupt government is doing. Even universities like havard Waterloo, Oxford etc, didnt start from were they are now. The farming thing at Mulungushi university is not a bad idea at all, i think its a smart idea for the university to be independent rather than begging for food all the time. and that way they can even expand on their faculty and include agriculture. They can use those same farms for research work while producing food for their students. Zambians are good at condemning, and running to our friends abroad to enjoy their had work. We might be backward but lets enconrage every step forward and one day will get there too. United we stand divided we fall.

  12. The next move this government has to pull is to revisit the other two universities and improve them while they keep on building the new one. We dont have to let other projects sleep just because we are working on one. As mentioned earlier by one blogger, let them encourage research work by companies from all over the world, that way they will increase on their funding and in turn reduce on tution fees and allow more people to afford higher education. I just hope this is not oone of them political creaming by these politicians. But either way lets support every positive work that the governement will do and try to spear them in the right direction.

  13. This man should have done something a long time considering that he used to lecture at UNZA, he definately knows the state of infrastructure when he left.

  14. #21 Ba Muzo ati tamwaumfwa po FC Wolfsburg? Abaice bakali. With skillfull players like Demba Ba, they stormed the Bundesliga last year by surprise. They beat most of the renown teams like Bayern München and became instant favorites. Nomba cilemoneka kwati umwela naupwa…

  15. Surely Zambians who comment on this page, lets give credit to something positive and say keep it up. If MMD fails us we shall surely point it out without fear or favour. I think the idea of new universities was long overdue. I will encourage the Govt. to open Universities in all the provinces in Zambia.
