Chief Macha of the Tonga people in Choma district has advised the Livingstone City Council to employ workable approaches in tackling street vending in the tourist capital.

Chief Macha, who is the chairperson for the Choma joint monitoring team on sanitation committee, said street vending in Livingstone has gone out of hand because the city council has not been pragmatic in dealing with the situation.

He said effective legal enforcement that involves the state police, judiciary and the city council was the only effectively way to deal with street vending, which he said had become an eyesore in the tourist capital.

Chief Macha who is in Livingstone attending a UNICEF sponsored workshop on sanitation said the city council in the tourist capital should emulate the approach taken in Choma where street vending has become a thing of the past.

He said arrests and prosecutions was one effective way to reduce cases of vending because culprits would be sentenced to carry out community service by the courts of law.

The traditional leader said this would act as a deterrent to would be offenders.

Chief Macha further said traditional leaders were vehicles for development and must use their authority to champion the cause for good sanitation.

He noted that public health institutions will be greatly decongested if all people worked together to stop practices that cause poor sanitation and disease.

He said he has dedicated his leadership to addressing sanitation challenges not only for his own chiefdom but the entire Choma district.

Chief Macha said almost all households in his chiefdom have built pit latrines as a way of promoting good hygiene practices.

  1. There is an urgent need to find a lasting solution to this problem. Its about time sanity was completely restored not only in Livingstone but other towns as well, especially Lusaka. An alternative place should be found for the effected vendors, if not, chances are that, they will still come back after some time.

  2. This chief is very intelligent and dedicated to his job. Any promotion for him to be chief of chiefs?

  3. The chief sees more clearly than those guys who are just interested in stealing money from the council by imposing fines on to innocent citizens. Livingstone is very dirty, with litter. In choma the council is working may be. Get the council chief in choma to go face lift Livingstone please.

  6. The chief speaks wiser than certain people.I dnt know why he cant take over the leadership of UPND. We need him as our president and not this board chairman we have as our leader.

  7. There is something wrong at Livingstone City Council. Last year its residents selling expired drugs after the council had ordered their destrcution.
As top tourist destination, the councilis is supposed to come up with pragmatic plan to sort out this problem once and for all. Why its understood these are hardtimes we are living in, Local authorities including Lusaka City Council should move in and ensure that there is sanity on our streets. Let us stop politiking each time these guys are about to be cleared off the streets.
There is a big problem on Freedom, Lumumba and Katunjila Roads. Despite the dangers posed due to heavy trucks using Lumumba, pipo just go about selling salaula and other merchandise without regards to others. One day a truck or bus gona plough into pipo and lives lost
