Government has given striking nurses and other health workers up to Monday June 29, to return to work or face dismissal.

Health Minister, Kapembwa Simbao, told journalists in Lusaka that nurses who would not report to work by Monday should consider themselves dismissed.

The minister has since advised qualified nurses to consider applying for vacant positions that would be created by striking nurses and other health workers who will fail to meet the deadline.

Mr Simbao said striking nurses and other health workers will with effect from tomorrow not be allowed to gather within hospital grounds.[quote]

He reminded the striking nurses that terms and conditions of service for public service workers stipulate that any worker who absconds from work for 10 continuous days is liable for dismissal.

He also assured nurses and other health workers, who are not reporting to work for fear of victimisation by fellow workers that adequate security measures have been put in place.

He said government is still engaged in negotiations with the workers’ unions over possible adjustments of other allowances among them housing, hence wondered why workers should rush to striking.

He also urged workers to take seriousness President Rupiah Banda’s announcement of the formation of the Salaries Commission to address concerns of workers.

Nurses and other health workers went on a nationwide strike to press government to increase risk, uniform and night allowances among others.

  1. Good move on “Health Minister, Kapembwa Simbao, told journalists in Lusaka that nurses who would not report to work by Monday should consider themselves dismissed” nd I will wait and see if this threat will scare any serious striking nurses.

To the nurses, please do what is necessary. Time of being taken advantage of is over.

    Prevention is better than cure.

  2. This is a desperate move by the Minister. How do you think you will manage to recruit thousands of nurses in a short period of time. Just give the nurses what they want. Oooh you want to save for your gratuity!!!!

  3. They should go back to work they have a pay rise and the allowances is another part of the negotiations let it run its couse give them a time frame say a 6 months or so. If nothing happens then you continue with the strike. You can not have everything you want at one go be realistic becuse even your demands ie nigh allowance from K40000 to K1.98m is not realistic problem mufuna kuwina fast compromise on the allowances no government in this world or day and age will easly give in to its people without compromise. Even a trader starts at a hight price knowing there will be a compromise

  4. Kapembwa, can you stop being so insensitive? Please mind what you say to your people as the same politicians that are forcing you to intimidate the nurses and health workers using your voice will one day stub you in your back.

They deserve to be given better conditions of service. Why didn’t RB fire his ministers when they demanded that? How much do you get compared to them. How many of these people you intend to fire get well over USD600? For how long will Zambia keep on hiding their pain because of intimidation?

Striking workers…please continue with your strike. This government is NOT sensitive to your cry. They are only good when they want a vote!

  5. Don’t threaten nurses, alot of money has been stolen from ministry of health and no -one is saying anything surely Kapoko is a small guy in this.We know you have money to pay nurses, how else do you fund those trips to morning star Johannesburg. No matter how weak the kwacha you have always managed to send politicians abroad. No matter what the so called national budget stipulates.Pay the nurses and stop killing the masses.Viva health care for all zambians

  6. Hon Simbao, Threats will not solve anything but instead worsen the situation, dont give up on dialogue, it works sometimes.

  7. This warning is long overdue. In as much as I have feelings about the sufferings Nurses it must be understood that this strike is illegal because it was not sanctioned by the Union. I have far worse feelings for the patients that these Nurses have abandoned. Are they really Nurses or a bunch of assassins (as most people have always complained?). They must know that it is not the entire bunch that will find the scarce nursing jobs abroad.

Why not give time to the Union to discuss with Govt. If they are not happy they continue pushing the Union to strike a better deal – Only the Union should declare a strike action.

  8. I fear to be treated by these nurses, undoubtedly, they will send a lot of patients to the graves early. Mark my words, you will hear of beatings in hospitals. You can’t forces a horse to dance.

  9. ILIKO BAD. How does the minister expect qualified nurses to apply for jobs that will be lost by protesting nurses? Who would want to join a team with alot of problems? So that they also protest later?

  10. The Gov needs to realise that the nurses do a tough job and should be treated with respect, how do they expect them to have the Motivation , when their work goes un noticed or un appreciated. Respect .

  11. And what net when you dismiss them???? are you and your children go start working in hospitals??? Please learn to resolve issues and threats all the time give them what they want and sacrifice your mid term gratuities.

  12. people are dying (bcoz of srtike) but the bad part is there is no spare life once lost no one can recover your life, just give the nurses what is due to them or you will not have people to threaten or rule.

  13. #13. And what next when you dismiss them???? are you and your children go start working in hospitals??? Please learn to resolve issues and not threats all the time, give them what they want and sacrifice your mid term gratuities.

  14. Its long overdue…just fire them….what is the use of claiming that we have nurses wen they dont work..better to fire and surely know that we dont have nurses…let them go where they will get waht they are crying for…ZIMBABWE NURSES are already lining up.
    Enough is enough.

  15. #16BOMA ni BOMA , these nurse have been neglected for so many years while the ministers and the Fat cats get all the money , i think it is fair for them to go back to work on condition that their demands will be met. Its tough been a nurse and let alone in Zed.

  16. #17 Nine Chale, Good morning sir, i agree with you on this one, some of these bloggers dont undestand what it means to be a nurse in zed.

  17. BOMA NI BOMA its better u go to your home town zimbabwe….i could you express yourself like that as if you dont know whats happening in zambia.nurses deserve more than what they have been geting, they have legal rights to go on strike if the conditions are bad…dont talk too much watch out

  18. Forcing nurses to work in an unhappy condition will lead to so many deaths due to negligence….Mark my words Kapembwa fimofimo…MMD the problem is u think so low…

  19. Pls dont misunderstand me…two wrongs have never made a right. The strike is illegal. And the GRZ cant afford to pay waht our nurses are asking for….we just have to be realistic. Some foolish politicians are calling for the suspension of NCC…very dangerous to be illiterate indeed.U make calls to suspend the polishing up of a country’s BIBLE because u want to eat for a day…? These nurses should march the vigour displayed in the work stoppage in their work culture as well.

  20. STRIKING WORKERS, PLEASE DON’T BE THREATENED BY BEING FIRED. IN FACT JUST LET THEM FIRE YOU. AND THOSE NURSE IN OTHER TOWNS AND VILLAGES PLEASE JOIN-IN. LET’S SEE IF THEY CAN RECRUIT FROM SOUTH AFRICA WHERE THEY THINK MEDICAL OFFICERS ARE MORE QUALIFIED.

  21. Minister this statement just shoe how dull you are, do you think nurse can buy that may be try Kindergarten children !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. This headline has just confirmed what I have been battling with all this time,Now I know that our oh sorry Zambian govt is a curse to the nation.Yah you may be right that you dont have money to meet the demand of the civil servants, but this is not the way you should handle the civil servants, try to explain to them in an amicable way not he way you are doing it.Why intimidating them when you even know that they are doing the right thing at a right time, these pipo needs good condition of service that much you know,Okay fine when you dimiss them where are you going to get experienced nurses to replace them? Guys to be honest with you even the devil is better than you coz when the devil is tempting someone he will put in a way that such a one will not even no that he/she is sinning.Get lost.

  23. No. 23 I guess you are not Zambian or you are hiding yourself, I think you are on the Gov payroll. Advice to you, shut up or talk about something else. Nurses contuine with the strike, let this minister know that its time to Change. Change has come!!!

  24. Who iam is not as important as what iam …and iam a human being. No right thinking person can call for waht #28 is doing …Please separate cheap politics from this…U are so fast at calling for change but for short as to even tell pipo what that change will do…IAM VERY ZAMBIAN…

  25. no intimidation nurses, keep on fighting until you get what you deserve. Bena bangwele are about to get their mid term gratuity and they tell you there’s no money. atase.

  26. Meantime, and in preparation for a worst case scenario, those who can afford it should start to organise their papers. Our borders are within reach. That is the language they know.

  27. 30 Ba Moze thanks and greetings. I will on there to check your data.
    _
    Prevention is better than cure.

  28. Ba Boma Ni Boma tamwakwata amano, are you a beneficiary of the corrupt money system? these civil servanst and the Zambian people have been abused by these so called leaders. They have used the issue of sympathy and humanity as a weapon. the time is gone let us solve this accordingly let them fire any one and you will see what this country will become. VIVA civil servants Strike until they are paid.

  29. #4 African mentality. Lets negotiate. Your friend went to TESCO with £1 less because of that mentality. Kumfwanafye. I bet he was thinking he was in Shoprite.

  30. but still mo fye ama nurses tupuba sanaaaaa these people shud hav there salaries reduced napapata .. just go back to work ba sakaaaa ukutemwa ulupiya u even let people dying coz of yo foolish strike yabashani kanshi yaaaaaaaaaa

  31. Ba BOMA NI BOMA ulibe nzeru! You even have the audacity to say Nurses do not work? You must be reasonable always!

  32. There is no evidence ever published that proves that more people die when doctors and nurses are on strike. What is evident is that the death rates remain constant or even drop. The number of nurses in Zambia per capita is so small that firing them wont make much difference. Let those who joined to serve human beings go back to work and their reward will be great from the Rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Prosperity and promotion does not come from the north or the south, the east or the west. An employee can never be richer than the employer. Zambia is poor and so will all its employees be. I urge nurses in Zambia to start private nursing practice and agencies. That is the way forward.

  33. By the way: Here is an observation. Why is it that whenever (or in most cases) bloggers want to swear, curse or insult, they resort to Bemba? One rarely hears insults in Lozi, Lunda, Kachokwe, Luvale, Tonga, Toka…Nyanja (Chewa), Nsenga, Ngoni, Ushi, Nyika, Tumbuka… Soli, Lenje… Please do not abuse Chitimukulu’s language. Ah! I see! They are trying to be cool.

  34. WE NEED PEOPLE WHO ARE ABLE TO CRITISIZE CONSTRUCTIVELY ISSUING INSULTS AT ANYONE.PLIZ NAPAPATA SANA DELETE ZE BIGEE

  35. Thats what you get from a rotten mouth embedded in a rotten system which only knows how to threaten people, abuse, steal, make itself rich, prositute and get Aids and later evacaute its members to south Africa for treatment. Its a modern day democratic rule, anyway, you will soon be the next Michael Jacksons.catch u at the cross roads, this comment might be my last one.

  36. ba zebigeee #39,mwa fyelwe mulechula mukafwa mulecula, with kind of menality boi uchinje boi uli mukulu boi

  37. No matter how genuine their position, these nurses are breaking the law. Their union leaders have not declred a dispute with government. I would like to suggest that the nurses should go back to work and form their own union, perhaps with other health care workers rather than as civil servants. From history the most toothless union in Zambia is the CSUZ. The Mineworkers union was powerful once but now it seems the Finacial services union outclasses them all. Teachers aren’t bad either. Salaries should be negotiated at least a year in advance and over an economic cycle. It is irresponsible to ask for a pay rise when the budget has already been passed. Salaries commission is a good idea and that is the case everywhere. No one knows how much they are worth.

  38. AKAPONDA MUCHENDE BOI WATS UP BIG UP BROKEN HILL JERABOH CONTINUE WITH THT SPIRIT ZE BEGGE WHTS UP TWEFWENE.WATS UP BREEZE.

  41. #58 Breeze
I agree. Lt will not publish if a contribution contains the short form of the name Richard in the text. But the obscernities that they allow in the venacular, especially Bemba, is terrifying. You computer experts is it difficult to add all these Bemba insults into the filter, so that people can become a bit more decent? I know they have freedom of expression, but if that is the case why not allow a free for all so that those who do not want to read this rubbish can go away?

  42. AS USUAL MEN HAV BEEN IN JAIL SEL BT THANK CONSTABLE MWAPE AM ON MY LAPTOP NOW BUSY BUSY BIG UP MEN IGNOR BASELESS COMMENTS,CRITICIZE CONSTRUCTIVERY.

  43. This is victivmisation at its worst. Okey, Lets say all nurses who are strike do not go back evn on monday. Are surely going to be fired? Stop joking around Mr. Minister. Those are called essential workers. Are even qualifications nurses going to accept the current conditions of services. Okey! nurses leave Zambia and go to Europe now. Let us see how Bwezani and his ministers are going run the hospitals.

  44. The ruling party is not resolving anything by using threats. why dont they for once listen to the cry of the suffering. They are getting mid term gratuity which they say is constitutional but can some one tell me when the labour laws did not mandate an employee to be paid his dues. even our money carries the promise to pay the bearer on demand. Should we be so cruel. Now even the monkies are joining in. Mr President please for this once do something that will make us remember u otherwise we shall only have he memory of the monkey. Can you believe that this story has traversed to globe!! OUCH!!

  45. just give what they demand for…you chaps are selfish with RB…no intimidation…VIVA courage..we are behind you nurses!!

  46. this minister does not think, is the one who need to be fired instead, because he has failed to resolve this issue(nurse srike). chipuba sana

  47. i think its goin to be like wat happened in 1997 wen ka chiluba fired all the doctors wen they went on illegal strike.he brought doctors from cuba and china then students also helped.then at last the doctors were the ones bergin for job.kaya mwandini, niyokosa league!!!

  48. We plead with you the nurses and doctors to please reconsider there demands. We should make sure that help our helpless people. The insensistive exhibited by Banda is just horrible.

  49. Ba zebiggie, if our country is to move forward let start being ojective in what we say and do its time government gave in to the peoples demands. te loss iyo

  50. bubbles come on sometimes been a leader means making unpopular decisions.. its not possible for everyone to be satisfied especially in a third world country feeling the effects of the global economic crisis..people should learn to sacrifice..if anything the job of a nurse is actually more of a vocation..so salary should if anything come second to taking care of the sick..

  51. and they say aba mu diaspora should come back…what a joke.take care of what you have.dont fill a mouth with what you cant chew..

  52. #73 Bubbies let’s just play a fair game look nurses are not the only fish in water we are all zambians assume evry one went on strike Teachers, army , the police evn u i don’t know who u are do u think the country will be in order ? let’s face it. tyms are just hard with the economic global crises don’t just BUK please THINK

  54. i actually pray that they stop allowing migration for work purposes and only for educational purposes ..there is no way our country can be losing labour to rich countries..funny enough the same fools working abroad demand to even vote while abroad..fya shani ifyo? they think we have money for such an excerise!

  55. #78 money is always there, our elections are usually donor funded. what we need is a system in place to allow everyone to vote.. as long as things are not okey at home people will migrate n come back when they are ready.ie if they want to open a bussiness and have enough funds to.

  73. Please Nurses continue with the Strike it is like these guys have taken you people for granted.Money is there if somebody can get K27 Billion for himself this money could have been distributed to all the health workers. You are the worst paid Health workers in the region.

  74. Simbao just like his mate teta, the ARVs have impaired their reasoning and who knows ……………………..

  75. Breeze big it up man how is th aftrnoon, wats for th weekend hop 2 meet at th sam plac men how many ar u takin 2day.

  76. Fire the Union Officials for escalating the problem. They failed the nurses by putting their interests first. It is cheaper to give them K50m each than reaching a tangible agreement the nurses.

  77. Nurses u go back for work then u dont know why u went o strike……….. pipo are not dying bkoz u guys are on strike, no, there are no facilities, medication, equipment etc.. Kapoko and RB oh with miti stole the money. now they want to instil fear in u, hell no, hell big no. its not possible to fire all of u at once, after all its them who risk there jobs more than u guy. they fire all medical staff, they will be kicked out of the offices the next day aswel.

  78. Ba kapembwa mwila tinya ama health workers. I am also one of them but working outside Zambia. Mulemona ati nga mwatamfya abo mukasanga bambi outside Zambia Ifwe teti tubwele uko. Bapeni ifyo balefwaya otherwise nabo bakabutuka nga ifwe

  79. This is the problem of having undergraduates run the government. MMD has failed and should be fired by monday instead. Nurses, please stay away!! They have enough money to pay sleeping MPs, ignorant ministers like Simbao, Vera chiluba and Dora but not to pay ordinary hard working Zambians!! This government sucks!!

  80. You guys u have run out of comments. Its better u keep quite than start acting like musicians. Coz according to my knowledge musicians are the ones who boost if not boasting then dissing, if not then girls or women,if not then gospel but rarely..In fact nurses should taught a lesson for their act.
