FODEP reacts to Mpombo’s resignation

Share

The Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) says the resignation of George Mpombo from his positions as Defence Minister and member of MMD National Executive Committee (NEC) should be treated with caution.

FODEP President Stanley Mhango said Mr. Mpombo’s resignation should not have come so suddenly especially that he is a senior MMD party member and cabinet minister in charge of a sensitive ministry.

Mr. Mhango has however said FODEP will await President Rupiah Banda’s reaction to this abrupt resignation.
This is contained in a statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today.

Mr. Mpombo announced his move at the weekend citing personal reasons. He also announced that he would not re-contest the Kafulafuta Constituency in the 2011 tripartite elections.

FODEP has since welcomed Mr. Mpombo’s decision to dedicate his time to studies and issues of environment in his constituency saying such a move would help the area and help fight effects of climate change in the country.

Mr. Mhango expressed hope that Mr. Mpombo will not change his words and backpedal as many politicians have done in the past.
He commended Mr. Mpombo for his move saying it will encourage young people to engage in politics.

Mr. Mhango said old and recycled politicians should emulate Mr Mpombo’s resignation as doing so will pave way for young politicians to start taking leadership roles while the old politicians act as advisors.

He also urged Mr. Mpombo to spearhead the formation of a think tank of both retired and active senior political party leaders to help render valuable advice to the governing of the country as this will help resolve some of the political problems being faced.

  1. The last bit of the news items is great, while the timing of MP Mpombo’s resignation is purely his choice that must be respected.

On “Mr. Mhango said old and recycled politicians should emulate Mr Mpombo’s resignation as doing so will pave way for young politicians to start taking leadership roles while the old politicians act as advisors“, I am just waiting to read that PF self-appointed leader has decided to support president HH as UPND-PF PACT presidential candidate as he takes a little stressing role in active politics.

Such a move will allow PF cadres to have ample time to support president HH for 2011 elections.

This is time for real change.

Bookings will always be made in advance as owing to demand places will be limited.NO RALLYS yet as the prof is not mob driven.just a sizeable attentive audience is what he’ll need.more details will follow

  4. “Mr. Mhango expressed hope that Mr. Mpombo will not change his words and backpedal as many politicians have done in the past.” If he chooses to backpedal, that is his decision. When will people learn? Its not for FODEP to say. It rests on his shoulders and he bears the consequences. “Fodep have accepted his resignation”…. Did they have a choice??

  5. I fail to understand some bloggers it seems the churches they go to, they are not taught about humility. if one does heed to other peoples advice that does not mean the devil has defeated them NO!

  6. “Mr. Mhango said old and recycled politicians should emulate Mr Mpombo’s resignation as doing so will pave way for young politicians”. Well, I agree with the “recycled” bit but not on the “old” because someone can be young but of little objectivity and no value like Mr Kambwili, GBM, Chilumanda and others.

  7. This resignation by Mpombo is fishy.I know how poverty-stricken Mpombo was when he was a PTA Chairman at Chiwala Tech Boys.He used to ride an Eagle bicycle.Has he amassed enough wealthy?

  8. if sata can tek such a move, it would benefit the “pact” and the nation at large. if i were him, i would just ensure the removal of the ruling party by watever means. give chance to HH and Lubinda. the problems is that a lot us are power hungry……..god help us

  9. I copy and paste a decent story from iafrica.com imwe bakabalwe ba LT mwauma amaspanner you really must wake up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

  10. “Mpombo wibilima aba bilima tabaya” Going by this definition,i really don’t think mpombo has outrightly resigned.I think there’s something fishy!!

  11. Number 9 I think you are right Lubinda and Hachilema should be assisted so that they can take over this government as both young men look to be serious and would go a long way to lead in which we people in Zed relate to politics….in other words we need young men even Mutati in the government is great as well………..please old guys just be there to give advice to these young men……. the general would be great for support as well Miyanda.

  12. Somebody mentioned ABSA and Mpombo. Can we hear more please? Was Mpombo asked to resign to save face (if he has one!) or what? Senior Citizen – please help us.

  13. Well done mpombo! Now can u pliz spill the beans….coz i know theres more to your resignation than meets the eye. Teti mulekefye ifyo iyo. I’m sure u’ve seen the rot in both govt and mmd. Join the pact!

  14. ABSA has sued the Zambian Govt over some oil deal gone wrong. Word has it the Zambian Government has already started paying ABSA millions in US$. Mpombo was Minister of Energy then. Hint, Hint.

  15. Mpombo is a Great man,He should be emulated by your President Nyama Soya because he has no substance in him.Viva HH/Lubinda not recycled thrash.

  16. Mpombo’s resignation from this inept govt had nothing to do with ABSA arrangement.People stop spreading malicious rumours.

  17. Please dont talk about Lubinda !!! We need youngmen who are independent and analytical thinkers and not the likes of Lubinda who just parrot what Sata says. He participated in the inacting of the NCC act in parliament and today he is not attending for fear of Sata. He participated in approving the budget and recently he was supporting the strike by nurses. He should hav studied the budget to see what percentage was allocated for civil servants emolumets. Also HH a let down. Mazoka prepared an alternative budget as a base line for debating in parliament but these guys nothing. Dont mention their names for top positons please.

  18. Monkeys will keep pissing on those that does not tell the truth, we need change
But thanks Mr. Minister G. Mpombo for such a bold decision you took.
Enjoy the rest of your private life with your family,
    i remain your supporter.

  20. Very rare noble thing for Afrikan leaderz to just rezine even when there are clear reazonz to do so. In this vain the GM haz scored a rare first and shud be commended while giving him the benefit of doubt.

  21. MMD is a Zoo for mentally retarded human beings. Most ministers have qualifications you will struggle to see under a microscope

  22. We need to put the general (Miyanda) in the lime light. Normally clean people are not popular because their hands can not be twisted anyhow and offer no bribes to pull the crowds. So far he has no skeletons in any cupboard, viva honest people!
