Zambia Police urged to be professional

Share

A former Copperbelt University student has advised the Zambia Police Service to be professional in their work and desist from using live bullets on protesting students.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Kasama this morning, Davies Kasonso Sikazwe condemned police on the Copperbelt for shooting and injuring a CBU student on Monday following disturbances at the institution.

Mr Sikazwe, who is former Copperbelt University Students’ Union (COBUSU) Academic Affairs secretary, said the shooting incident at CBU was uncalled for.

He said police officers as trained people should refrain from firing live bullets indiscriminately at protesting students to avoid any lose of life.

Mr Sikazwe has since appealed to Inspector General of Police Francis Kabonde to make sure that the police officer, who is alleged to have shot and injured the student, was punished accordingly.

He said while he does not support any riotous behaviour there was need for the police to exercise restraint when dealing with demonstrators to avoid exacerbating the situation.

He has urged CBU students to maintain high levels of discipline at all times and avoid incidents that would tarnish the image of their highly acclaimed institution.

Sikazwe, who successfully completed a degree in Business Administration in 2004 at CBU, called on government to continue supporting the welfare of students’ through sponsorship of their education.

Yesterday, President Rupiah Banda condemned the shooting of a student at the Copperbelt University by police, following the riotous behaviour by students at the institution.

The President has since demanded for a detailed report from the police command regarding the shooting incident.

On Monday, Police in Kitwe fought running battles with unruly students from Copperbelt University resulting in a student being shot and injured in the process.

The incident was sparked when police rescued a suspected thief whom they students wanted to set ablaze.

  2. what stupidity is this police shooting an innocent student to protect a thief? i hear the thief was in one of the students room while the students were waiting 4 the police to come en pick him up but the police jst came and started firing teargas and live ammunition.this is foolishness

  3. By now we should think of the training that the chaps go through and the qualifications you need to find yourself at Lilayi. The training is so poor and the students are complete grade 12 failurers, what else can you get from such officers ! Their bosses raise through rack by being obedient cadres and have no proffessional skills to share. All the *****s will do with the guns at their disposal is to kill innocent members of the public.they have no good education background.why are the enemies of the post and university students?Zambia which way are we going sure?

  4. The students too have no quality in them whatsoever. What is going on back home is a very worrying state of affair and in few years time if Jesus is not coming just now, is scaring even to imagine.Everything goes now like in the animal farm.I was so sure Zambia shall be saved but now we are getting bad in all aspects of life. Why are we top among the most corrupt countries? No one brings new idea to manage a company ,Gov department or Charity apart from bribery, corruption, tribelism, nepotism and stealing. For as long as wrong people are in these offices we shall keep getting it wrong. Can we have a saviour please God.

  5. Enough of the trigger happy ex- kaponya’s now carrying arms freely, teach them how to serve and protect afterall its the people’s tax that feeds them, when they get paid at all.

  6. I suppose if Politicians and Leaders (cadres) behave like savages, well so will the Police and the Students too. Are we all happy now? GOOD!

  7. yes Kadoyo we are all happy now……….just worried with the unborn Zambians they may not be happy with our culture of doing things.

  8. #7 michael me, believe me, I am worried too but as the head of the house you should lead by example. Which is totaly not the case with the current leadership

    • Stunning! I particularly like the one where he’s chsinag after her. You should have posted more! I could definitely have seen more of this session. Oh and how pretty is the back of her dress?

  9. The problem of police carrying firearms started in the 1970s when Zambia started experiencing armed robberies. Police detailed to guard banks were the only ones allowed to carry guns but this was later extended to each and every constable. I see no reason why police should carry guns. Guns should only be allowed to special police units dealing with serious crime involving firearms. The rest of the police force should just carry batons like they used in the first republic (in UK ordinary police don’t carry guns and yet crime here is highly sophisticated). The police have become a danger and a menace to the same society they are meant to protect. I bet some police officers detailed to silence the students may have nephews, nieces, brothers or sisters studying at the university.

  10. Its sad that the poor student was shot for demonstrating. Police should be trianed to handle riots in the proper way and not shoot people anyhow. But then again, the students didnt have reason to riot in this case. Why should that thief be set ablaze. What has he done that deserves the death penalty being imposed on him without trial. Chiluba has stolen more money from these very student why cant they go and set him ablaze instead. Lets not be monsters over a stolen phone or radio. These are the same student we expect to be leaders of tomorrow? wow! We have politicians stealing more than this so called thief but we even pay taxes to fly them to hospitals that we will never even see in our lives, and a poor fellow steals a cell phone and we trying to kill him, what nonesense is this!

  11. This man is speaking in Kasama, is there anyone that is important there. Was he speaking to village animals. Police people there don’t even have uniform and they walk round in tropicals. I think they use a telegraph ( Moss code) to communicate. The Police think, you are a joke!
