Zesco to shut down two Kafue Gorge generators

Share

The Zambia Electricity Supply Company (ZESCO) will Thursday, August 6th, 2009, shut down two of its generators at Kafue Gorge power station for mandatory post commissioning checks.

The generators 3 and 4 will be shut down for 21 hours after evening peak from 22:00hours on Thursday 6th August 2009 to 19:00 hours on Friday August 2009.

ZESCO Senior Manager – Marketing and Public Relations Lucy Zimba says the shut down will result in a power deficit of 33Mega watts.

Ms Zimba said in Statement in Lusaka today that therefore during the period of shutdown massive load shedding will be carried out especially during evening peak hours in order to balance demand and available power supply.

She has however, advised customers to conserve energy during this period to minimize load shedding.

  1. When are we going to change our attitude in Zambia and truly be pragmatic and assertive about our resources. We may not be like the rich countries but we can surely conserve the little we have beautifully. Like a little home with little belongings but beautifully arranged and contained.

  2. Maxwell has already worked out a solution to Zesco’s Problems (13 June 1831 – 5 November 1879 – a Scottish theoretical physicist and mathematician). The only problem faced is “our friends” in the Economics Field. They argue that once maxwell’s solution is implemented, the world would face “the most difficult to tackle” world financial crisis. It is the theory about a giant electric generator that does not require any form of energy ( Fuel) to run. One of my Proffesors (late) told me not to, even ,ever think about it! ( Funny).

  3. The problems zesco is facing are the same zamtel is facing. simple reason is money allocated to these companies even when they are profit making organisations is channeled to salaries and other personal emoluments. simply trim your bloated management and increase efficient use of manpower and more money will be channeled to maintaining the systems. so many managers, regional provincial imwe bane, is it a disease the whites left on you? a craving for titles and yet there is no output for the office bearers. also employ a very good revenue collecting programme coz some people and esp GRZ owe such utility coys billions of kwacha.

  4. I DON’T UNDERSTAND ZESCO…A COUNTRY AS DRY AS NAMIBIA NEVER EXPERIENCES LOAD SHEDDING……..WE HAVE ALL THE WATER WE NEED FOR HYDRO ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION …….NI PA ZED ZONA

  5. For the first time in the history of ZESCO a person who has run the two largest power stations in Zambia is one of the two people running ZESCO. I therefore do not antipate any lack of support in running the power stations from Head Office as was the case before.

  6. Thats what happens to institutions when you disregard professionalism and place incompetant people in the name of relatives to manage important nation companies like ZESCO. We havent forgetten the big Family Tree. Well these are the fruits of that tree enjoy it

  7. #5. Sovient Telecoms Eng. Be careful. Never say NEVER! We don’t know all the physics there is to know. In 1920 when Goddard, a rocket scientist, claimed a rocket could reach the moon the New York Times laughed at him pointing out that a rocket could not operate in a vacuum. In 1969 when Apollo 11 landed on the moon the New York Times issued a public apology to Goddard and by that time he was already dead.

  8. Zesco has so many problems and for one to understand there is need to know the background of Zesco, Capco and the councils. There has not bin much investment in equipment and the best trained and experienced manpower is no longer at ZESCO instead they are working and perfoming wonders in other countries. Its unbelievable even DRC despite its many civil wars has a steady supply of power this includes Malawi, Tanzania etc.
There is something wrong the way we do things. A bulk of Zesco field staff are casuals who have bin working in some cases 15yrs.How do you expect Zesco to deliver. Come 09hrs most of the key officials claim to be in the field yet they are busy doing their PJ’s and only reappear in their offices towards knoff time. Even new MD will soon follow suit, Its bad worl culture

  9. Kafue Gorge and Kariba North Power stations were recently rehabilitated as ZESCO have been stating all along. After putting their machines in service and after they have been working for a short while there is need to shut down and carry out some manadatory tests to ascertain the integrity of the machines after the rehabilitation works. Even when you buy a brand new car you need to take it back for service after 1000km, is this concept so difficult to understand. Our defeatist culture is so bad that we can never appreciate any thing, sad indeed.

  10. #14 Jules. We know there is planned and forced outage. We have no problem with a planned outage. But is it not true that ZESCO put out too many machines for rehabilitation instead of gradually phasing the rehabilitation works and that there were cost overruns which resulted in Zesco failing to finish the rehabilitation works until GRZ bailed it out despite reservations from the World Bank. I have high regard for the P.S. Peter Mumba who I believe succeeded where previous P.S’s failed and overrode the WB’s objections to intervene despite ZESCO being commercialised.

  11. eeish. this prob. since last year it has not been solved. what the hell is gov doing apart from picking on Kabwela?
