CEG condemns University demos

Share

The Centre for Elections and Governance (CEG) has described the action by University of Zambia (UNZA) students to block education minister Dora Siliya from attending their graduation ceremony as political blackmail.

Centre Trustee, Gershom Musonda says the decision taken is also likely to affect their academic performance.

Mr Musonda said in an interview in Lusaka today that there is need for students to consider engaging in constructive criticism for the betterment of the country.
He said there is no need for students to engage themselves in acts that are likely to bring confusion between their administration and government.

He explained that students should not take advantage of important functions such as graduation ceremonies to air their grievances against government.

Mr Musonda added that students must always devise practical and good ways of pushing their agenda for the development of the institution and the country as a whole.

He pointed out that the recent shooting of the Copperbelt University (CBU) student should not be blown out of proportion.

Mr Musonda stated that there is no need for the students to demonstrate when President Rupiah Banda has shown interest in the matter by ordering the inspector of police to have the police officer who shot the student arrested.

He stressed that students should give the police ample time to investigate the matter and not rush in demonstrations that can bring about confusion and disturb their academic year.

Mr Musonda has further advised the unions at CBU and UNZA to give the minister a chance to perform her constitutional duties adding that she is just an appointee by the President.

UNZA and CBU students are today planning to demonstrate against the delay of arresting a police officer who shot a CBU student. The students have also planed to demonstrate against Education Minister Dora Siliya if she attends the UNZA graduation today.

  1. CAN PLIZ SOME1 TELL THESE LEADERS OF TOMMMOROW TO CONCENTRATE ON THEIR STUDIES COZ THEY ARE JUST WASTING THEIR STUDY TIME.

  2. Bloggers, FORMER president Frederick Chiluba’s son, Miko has been arrested for being found in possession of cocaine. Are they trying to keep us busy with kafipi’s son’s case and not his? Tomorrow is kafipi’s judgement tefyo?

  3. Hey Pipo long tym.
Its true Dora should be removed from the ministry of education because of the negative perception people have about her. Our children need ministers who are role models, people they can admire and look upto. Clearly Ms Siliya falls short of these virtues in the work of the tribunal findings though the high court cleared her.

  4. #7 I would advice you to change your user ID because a lot of people may find it offensive. If LT’s webmaster is wise, he would do his job by blocking such IDs.

Back to the lecture: the CEG should ask itself what led to the demos instead of condemning them collectively.

  5. Ceg must shut up. Bootlickers lyk him re de reasons for ve demo. Nurses wre only heard wen they put up a demo. Its d only lingo d govt undastands man. 6. Mr Musonda sir….we know you are one of these MMD-thieves. Tell us what strategy should Zambians use to engage the unlistening MMD-thieves in contructive talks?? On Seliya all Zambians said no to her appointment but RB could not heed to the views of Zambians since he thinks he is above the law. Please do somethig quickly before a terrible thing happens in Zambia. Look at what is happening , its a clear sign that things are not good in Zambia and that anytime anything can happen. THATS WHY ITS GOOD TO HAVE A LISTENING GOVNT BUT OURS IS A GOVNT OF PEOPLE WHO THINK THEY ARE MORE HUMAN THAN OTHERS. Please change for good otherwise at the pace at which peace is deteriorating in Zambia it will not be a surprise to find Zambia is in dirt .

  9. The Dora Siliya saga will only end when the president tells the nation the true relationship between him and Siliya. As for Musonda I wonder who he thinks he is, just opening his mouth without thinking.

  10. Following “UNZA and CBU students are today planning to demonstrate against the delay of arresting a police officer who shot a CBU student. The students have also planed to demonstrate against Education Minister Dora Siliya if she attends the UNZA graduation today.“, the leadership by UNZA and CBU students by peaceful demonstration demonstrated against Mr President RB Banda and his Administration has come at the right time. Where the UNZASU has shown that it is good to get 10 million Kwacha money from Mr MMD GRZ Zambian President RB Banda and later show his failing Administration red cards.

I hope all Zambians will take after this way of doing things by getting all money from MMD officials but voting against MMD in elections and behaviour.

  11. “They rushed to the main road just outside their campus, Jumbo Drive and started stoning vehicles resulting into the burning of a private vehicle” The other week there was a Story by LT regarding the shooting of a CBU student. Going by what was reported by the Post today as I have captioned. Should anyone condemn police aggression towards these CBU Thugs ? May the Police aim FOR THE HEAD next time coz these thugs just vent their anger on innocent people. Honestly how does one connect Dora to an innocent motorist ?

  12. It does not make any sense for students to demand resugnation of Dorika, she is merely an appointee of RB. The right for studennts do is engange GRZ constructively. Graduation ceremony has nothing do with their daily problem. I was of the view that their demonstration over the shooting of their colleague at CBU by police was better way being uderstood by RB. It is becoming extremely difficult for some parents and guardians to sponsor their children to UNZA & CBU because of academic instability. At some sre struggling sponsoring kids to ZCAS, Zambia Open University, Namibia, South Africa, Australia etc. yet such money is supposed be flowing into Unza coffers. What is the point of burning cars and injuring the very taxpayers who are on ur side. SANITY IS NEEDED. RIOTS, GO SLOW by DONS ETC

  13. If rb had eyes he wud ve heard. Demos re ve only lingos he undastands. U who re suportin shud find anotha hoby say keepin away fro matas u dnt undastand.

  14. # 8 Nine Chale, who determines one’s name? Suppose this name was a family name, and you are Adolf, what does one do? It is not what is in the name that matters, but what one does. You can be name Isaiah, Joseph, Jesus, Peter, John, but behave contrary to the people who had these names in history. So, I don’t see anything wrong in that name. If you do, how about just seeing the all entire Germany and Poland as evil, would you accept that? Hitler did not act alone. If that is the case, probably we should also look at those people who were involved in Apartheid, Slavery, Rwanda genocide and many more. Let us ban there names completely. No Pieter Bothas, no Ian Smiths, no to all whiteman’s names for most of these people participated in slavery.

  15. For godsake, the country is going down, the leaders we have do not talk about policies only fighting amongst themselves. At least KK had a National Development Plan for the country, our current leader is earning airmiles. The man is either flying in or out or officiating at functions, when does he have the time for meetings or planning. Can someone tell me who is running the country?

  16. Ba mukalamba bamusonda is a pro – MMD. I agree with MAMA G. But on the other hand, i never understood the role that Unviversities can do in shapping national public policies until i persued political science. Higher institutions of learning can act as “pressure groups” . Remember, by the 3rd year of their study, dont tell me they dont understand crucila national issues. UNZA , NIPA, Evelyn Home Students can help us shape the nation by protesting abt poli cies that dont make sance. The only thing is they should do it without violence. A
