MMD confident of retaining Solwezi seat

The Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) in North Western Province says it remains confident of defending the Solwezi Central parliament by-elections

MMD Provincial Publicity and Information Secretary, Benjamin Mufunga told ZANIS in an interview in Solwezi at the weekend that the party has done its homework and is geared for the fourth coming by elections.

Mr Mufunga said the party in the province has received overwhelming support from the people.

He said the Solwezi seat is an important seat for the party adding that it will not give it away easily.

He said despite the party performing badly during the August 13 ward by elections where it lost some seats to the PF/UPND pact, it will campaign hard to win this seat.

He said the leadership in the province has since taken measures to ensure that the candidate who will be chosen on the MMD ticket is one who will represent them well and help bring development to the area.

Meanwhile, Mr Mufunga said he is aware of certain people both from the opposition and the MMD who are campaigning secretly even before the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) announces the date for both nomination and poling date.

He has cautioned those from his party to wait until the dates are announced and the party advertises for the seat before they can start with their campaign.

Mr Mufunga said the party will not take lightly anyone who will be caught engaging in illegal campaigns advising them to follow the right procedure for them to be selected.

The Solwezi Central by elections fell vacant after the death of area Member of Parliament Benny Tetamashimba who was also Local Government and Housing Minister.

  1. Headline: ” MMD confident of returning Solwezi seat
MMD confident of returning Solwezi seat”

AND WHERE ARE THEY “RETURNING” THIS SEAT TO!? BACK TO TETA?!!!

    HOW ABOUT “RETAIN”—–Meaning “KEEP.”

    Come on now, LT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. I wonder if LT has anyone to proof read their articles before publishing them…such simple mistakes are an embarrasment to say the least

  3. I can see that the minds of some of the bloggers are now tired. Such grammatical errors speak volumes. LT you must remember that this site is view world over and not only by zambians but by non zambians who have an interest in knowing whats happening in this country which was at the peak of success, now nose diving into oblivision due to the weak judiciary and greedy cabinet.

  4. This is good news. MMD is a good party. Continue returning seats MMD. I like that good news

  5. The PF-UPND Pact has high chances of winning the Solwezi Central Constituency. One indicator is they seats MMD lost in ward by elections. The other determining factor is Solwezi Central is urban and most of the voters are enlighten on many matters and their behaviour in terms of politics is influenced by Copperbelt urban. The MMD will have an uphill battle. MMD will need to adopt a local resident whom they can sell and should avoid going for names. At the time Teta died his popularity had diminished such that wihout the hand of dead he was not going to retain the seat in 2011. During 2006 General elections the late won more votes in the villages than in town. Wish the participants the best.

  6. Order of the day in Zambia were government’s main focus is bye elections!!! When do they discuss developmental issues!!!!

  7. by elections are costly to the government. Let us change the constitution to avoid bye-elections so that whoever was number two during the general elections should automatically take over the seat.

  8. No.10. The Idea of number two taking over the seat is not workable in Africa because of witchcraft. I feel that the constitution should allow for the party that had the seat to do a replacement. I do agree with you on the costs involved in by elections

  9. I dont see anything wrong with this headline MMD CONFIDENT OF RETAINING SOLWEZI SEAT. Someone to spot the mistake for me please. The simple English i learned from a village school taught me that retaining is holding back so what is wrong with them saying they will hold it back, defend it someone to correct me please.

  10. #12, it has changed now. Anyway, # 11, you raise a very important point there. Maybe that is an option that Zambia can follow, with all these by-elections that have had to be done, including a presidential by-elections. We should think sustainably and stop abusing money, just because we can get it.

  11. Thanks # 14 for informing me otherwise i was lost.

on the the debate, There was a suggestion that the one who comes second in an election takes over when the current dies,or resigns but again withcraft, they will start kiling each other so that they become leaders also. Maybe let the NCC come up with a close that will allow the residents (constituency) decides on who takers over in this case without going an election wasting tax payers money.

  12. I have checked the english I see nothing wrong with the headline .However , the mmd is unlikely to return the solwezi seat the results of the ward by election suggest that the people have now confidence in UPND and HH after the damage caused by Mwananjiti and Sejani who are now not counted in this pact ; those of you who followed the UPND policy after the death AK you will realise that it was actually damaged by those two guys thanks god HH managed at last to revive it .If it was SAKI we could be talking of FDD now or NADA , however, the PACT has still some challenges with this man called GMB who behaves like Mwananjiti.

ONE ZAMBIA ONE NATION ABASH TRIBELISM

  13. We just need a KAONDE here. Just like Kasama is for Bembas according to GBM, even Solwezi is for Kaondes only/. No jokes here
