Share

Commerce Trade and Industry Deputy Minister says climate change has frustrated Zambia’s efforts to improve standards of living for her people.

Richard Taima said effects of climate change have negatively impacted on many sectors of the economy and has resulted in the reduced agricultural productivity and food production.

He said these effects have greatly affected the efforts government has put in place to improve the standards of living for Zambians, saying more resources are being put to mitigate climate change.

Mr. Taima said this at the commemoration of the World standards day under the theme “tackling climate change through standards” in Lusaka today.

He said climate change has also caused unprecedented rainfall patterns, floods and droughts, which have negative impact on the country’s food security.

He has since called on the Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) to take advantage of the international standards bodies to find solutions to the effects of climate change.

Mr. Taima said as a member of the international standards bodies, ZABS should implement the various guidelines and codes of practices which protect the environment, while maximizing on productivity, safety and quality.

He has bemoaned ZABS’ failure to efficiently utilize its equipment to help reduce the many problems of climate change.

Mr. Taima said ZABS has one of the best equipments in the world but these were not adequately utilized.

He has since stated that government was commitment to assisting ZABS with capacity building so that it can develop good standards for the country.

And ZABS Acting Director, Frederick Hamutunda said climate change has already started affecting the Zambia despite contribution less greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere.

Mr. Hamutunda said climate change has previously caused floods, rise in temperatures and reduced food production.

He has since called on the government to put stringent measures that will mitigate effects of climate change.

Mr. Hamutunda has however remained hopeful that the adoption of the international standards bodies will help mitigate the effects of climate change.

He has also called on other stakeholders to have a common goal in fighting the effects of climate change in the country.

  1. Are you sure that “climate change has frustrated Zambia’s efforts to improve standards of living for her people”?
Be serious, its all to do with the will of the leadership. So what other mitigating factors have you put in place as climate change will not be stopped?

  2. common is the climate the real reason the standards are not being raised or is it the corruption among the political and civil leaders. next they will blame the heat of october for the irrational thinking going on in parliament and govt

  3. Here we go again with this Govt, always looking for excuses to justify their failure.Reduce your unnecessary globe trotting trips and huge entourages and that will mitigate the effects

  4. This only one small example of how dangerous and insane our current leaders are with their climate change footprint tax plan AND OTHER ISSUES.

  5. Why is LT only about MMD now? I am beggining to believe this is a government mouth piece. As if no ichakulya Daily Mail and Times of poor Zambia are not enough!

  6. It’s because of climate change that government (FRA) has failed to buy maize from farmers.
Farmers have lost income by selling their maize to tricksters at a give-away price.
Frustrated government efforts to uplift living standards of the people my foot!!

  7. Climate Change Agenda: It’s All About Depopulation.
“Giving contraceptives to people in developing countries could help fight climate change by slowing population growth.More than 200 million women worldwide want contraceptives, but don’t have access to them, according to an editorial published in the British medical journal, Lancet. That results in 76 million unintended pregnancies every year.
If those women had access to free condoms or other birth control methods, that could slow rates of population growth, possibly easing the pressure on the environment.”

  8. What kind of b@ll Sh!t is this?????? Why can’t Zambian politicians be truthfull to the people!!! Climate change has absolutely nothing to do with the Zambian poverty!!!! Yesterday it was Global Financial meltdown or credit crunch!!

  9. Geography fifth grade, climate changes every 30 to 35 years; or if influenced by man a lot shorter. The earth is self regulatory, it shall re-adapt to whatever situation thrown at it. National council of scientific research and the meteorological departments are set up to offset any weathercondition by estimatory studies. In short less rain equals irrigation, flooding goes in hand with storm drains and preventative replacement. Climate change hoax or reality as seen from ones vantage point shall make alot of people rich and others, shall remain as before, sheeple!
It is a tool to usher in the age of electric cars and bio-fuels there I soldyou the truth.

  10. It is obvious that this Dminister doesn’t understand the subject. Zambia has had the best weather in the past few years. It is the MMD govt that has failed to take advantage of this to help improve agricultural production.

  11. There is no global warming. Period.
You can’t find a real scientist anywhere in the world who can look you in the eye and, without hesitation, without clarification, without saying, kinda, mighta, sorta, if, and or but…say “yes, global warming is with us.”
There is no evidence whatsoever to support such claims. Anyone who tells you that scientific research shows warming trends – be they teachers, news casters, MPs,Ministers, Vice Presidents or Presidents – is wrong. There is no global warming.

  12. #10, they are already doing it by giving the socalled HIV/AIDS patients ARVs. That’s the WESTs strategy of depopulsing the THIRD world (Zambia included). On the other hand, is Mr Richard Taima serious about his statement honestly? I’d be very inerested to know who actually advises these government officials to go on record and make these outrageous and nonsensical outbursts. ok so just blame government failed “efforts” on the climate now? What a ridiculous and irresponsible statement! 2011, we need REAL change and away with these recycled politicians whose main purpose is to STEAL before they leave office! Sick and tired of these punks!!!!!!!!

  13. 14 Mwana wakwitu, i agree with you, some people will become rich and others will remain same as with this carbon creit programmes where developed nations are given funds for carrying out climate change projects in developing countries……

  14. #10 1984
The Tragedy of the Commons is at play indeed. “The Population Rate increases in a Geometric Ratio and food resource prodution increases only in an Arithmetic Ratio”. Truly the ghost of The Right Reverend Thomas Malthus has come to haunt mankind.Whats sad is the human species is still in denial of these obvious truths. “Its shockingly clear that if humans curbed their run away libido we may not be in the environmental mess that we find ourselves in. The prehistoric desire to satisfy the itch in our loins will in the end be our undoing as a race” – Namakando Nalikando Sinyama
