RB disappointed with dirty state of markets

President Rupiah Banda
President Rupiah Banda

President Rupiah Banda has expressed concern at the filthy state of most of the Markets in the Country.

President Banda says he is disappointed that despite Government having launched the keep Zambia clean campaign in 2007, the momentum of the programme has slowed down.

He was speaking during celebrations to mark the Silver Jubilee for the Zambia National Marketeers Association (ZANAMA) held at Kaunda square in Kitwe yesterday.

He said it was saddening to note that the Keep Zambia Clean Campaign Vehicles which were procured at a great cost had turned to vehicles for ferrying merchandise which have no relevance to the programme.

He directed the Minister of Local Government and Housing Eusakio Kazongo to keep a close eye on the matter and deal firmly with all those abusing the keep Zambia clean Campaign Vehicles.[quote]

The President also directed Dr. Kazongo to ensure that the Keep Zambia Clean campaign was revamped.

He said there was need for traders to ensure that they advertise their businesses effectively by offering customers an attractive environment to purchase from.

He added that it was high time Markets stopped being identified with diseases like Cholera, Typhoid and dysentery which customers contract by visiting such places.

The President further said markets were being managed by committees that collect fees from Marketeers adding that the unrepresentable state of the Markets gave customers and Local Government Authorities the impression that nothing sensible was done with the monies that Market Officials collects.

He challenged ZANAMA to add value to the entire trading environment at Markets countrywide.

The President who has since left Kitwe was accompanied by Home Affairs Minister Lameck Mangani, Local Government Minister Eustakio Kazongo and Labor Minister Austin Liato.

Others who attended the function were Copperbelt Minister Mwansa Mbulakulima, his permanent Secretary Villie Lombanya, Copper belt Town clerks and District Commissioners.

  1. Yes the markets could be cleaner, no doubt but why not leave that up to the city council and work harder to create employment opportunities and reduce the cost of living instead? The better the economy and the more jobs there are, the less people will be forced into hustling as marketeers. This means less congested and cleaner markets…

  2. KEEP ZAMBIA CLEAN CAMPAIGN was just another way of stealing money from the public by Levy & her girlfriend Silvia….please don’t anger us with that junk. DO YOU THINK ALL ZAMBIANS ARE FOOLS??

  3. This is one matter that must be taken seriously by all stakeholders. When ancient Romans looked down upon barbarians, what was implied was that the Romans were cleaner people. It did not mean that Romans were more intelligent or otherwise. When we start keeping our markets, streets, working places etc. clean, everything else will just fall rightly in place. Trust me on that one:-)

  4. This man can see dirty markets but fails to see his dirty tactics in Govt and MMD leadership style. For a year now, he has been on the road outside Zambia and this is when he has seen conditions prevailing in his so called country. Anyway, he thought everyone gets and eats from hotels like him.

  5. But why directing ZANAMA lets just remove council and replace them wt commitees.LT why have you removed the other story where r.b was in Kitwe.

  6. yes,the markets are dirty.the issue is local govt have plan on how to make these places cleaner.it politics as usual.the towns would not even tel u where u can buy a dustbin, because they have redefined their roles-chief council chief executive for official gatherings.its pathetic, chisokone market.

  7. Markets should be run by private management companies licensed by the local councils. Such licences should stipulate such things as how much the management company can charge for market stalls, how much should be handed over to the council and how the company can keep as profits, the minimum standards of cleanliness, etc. Licences can be revoked and put out to tender if the management fails to keep their side of the bargain. Running organisations by committee rarely works. Also, councils have a poor track record at running commercial enterprises.

  8. Yes, Zambian markets have remained dirty for as long as I can remember and a new health hazard has been added to this where according to recent press reports some market stalls sell vegetables produced with the use of human waste (faeces). It’s a vicious circle.

  9. It’s not just buying Gabbage collecting vehicles, Vehicles can pick and dispose the gabbage, where are the people employed to do these jobs before he even start saying he is shocked, No plan poyamba amu dala

  10. too much flying in your jet mr.president, spend more time in your country and tour all the towns BY ROAD.you will see alot mudala. And the other problem is that you are surrounded by bootlickers,yes-bwanas,kamuchekas,muzungu anikondes,all-is-well-sir,…..shake up that dirty cabinet of yours mr.president….you will be shocked how your own cabinet is messed up.
