PAZA tells State to stop threatening private media

Amos Chanda

The Press Association of Zambia (PAZA) has called on government to desist from issuing threatening statements to the independent media in the country.

Reacting to government threats to revoke the license of Sky FM radio station in Monze for allegedly reporting threats by Chief Mwanachingwala to burn the sugar cane plantations belonging to Zambia Sugar Company in Mazabuka, PAZA vice president Amos Chanda said such threats are an affront to media freedom in the country.

Mr. Chanda said the threats have an effect of intimidating journalists working for the independent media. He challenged government to tell the nation the offence the radio station committed that can cost it its operating license.

Mr Chanda said the government should stop questioning the radio station, but rather divert its questions to the Chief who threatened to burn the sugar cane plantations.

  1. You will be surprised how chanda has u-turned on the ruling govt. Its just a year or so ago when Chanda was up in air singing & supporting MMD during NCC launch & consultations. When he was fired from the govt run paper-its all been sour for him. He is right in condemning Mwanachingwala because this chief drives Benz bought for him on political rounds and affiliations. Zambia Sugar used to bowl to this guy but realised he was no ordinary chief but traitor. Any chief who stands head high on MMD must be questioned. He is just a citizen luckily a senior one. It does not warant him to be threatening this company at all. Let him learn from chiefs in Northern & Luapula, when MMD will be gone, it will be over for him much more his own subordinates. Chanda is an example of blind following.

  2. MMD wants us not to know what is going on in our country. This retrogressive. Let people know the truth so that they can have an opinion on matters affecting them. A well informed nation is likely to make progressive advances.Running a government is not like witch craft which only works in darkness.

  3. The Sky is the limit in reporting the trueth.GRZ would do well to manage Chief Mwanachingwala’s verbal brakes than shielding him.Sky Radio was just a messenger of what the Chief had said.PLEASE, DON’T SHOT THE MESSENGER, BUT PROTECT HIM.BY THE WAY IS THIS SKY ON FM?

  4. Freedom has limits. Totally negative reporting, in the name of freedom to inform, can have negative social repacursions as is the case now.

While PAZA is protecting its members it should also enducate them to be a little bit responsible in their reporting.

  5. # 1
Which media organisation is Amos Chanda working for now?

  6. What is PAZA? it is a small group of poverty striken individuals with no education who know nothing but to imitate the educated and form a kantemba organization called PAZA. I am sure Fred Mmbeme of the post is the sectret president. Yes his name is Fred Mmbeme the editor! These guy’s days are numbered. We need to respect our government and its officials. Zambia ia a peace loving country and we will not allow hooliganism from kaponyas.

  7. ronnie will die and leave zambia behind..let him concentrate on his farming..let the media do its job..viva media freedom..
