I can be vice-president, says Sata

Share

PF leader Michael Sata

PATRIOTIC FRONT (PF) President Michael Sata has claimed that he is ready to serve as vice-president of PF-UPND pact if UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema is chosen as president of the pact.

But spokesperson for PF rebel MPs Peter Machungwa said it would be a mark of naivety for anyone to believe that Mr Sata would accept to be vice-president.

Mr Sata said in Lusaka yesterday on HOT fm Radio’s hot seat programme that he has no problem being vice-president of the pact because positions are not his preoccupation.

“Why not be vice-president…positions are not my priority, we are concerned about the welfare of the people,” he said.

And Mr Sata has accused rebel MPs from PF and UPND of being scared of the pact forming Government in the 2011 elections.

He said some MPs are worried of the PF-UPND pact forming Government hence soliciting to be pro MMD and speaking ill of the pact.

[pullquote]“Why not be vice-president…positions are not my priority, we are concerned about the welfare of the people,” he said.[/pullquote]

“Some MPs are very worried on where they will be when the pact forms Government hence soliciting to stand on the MMD ticket through speaking bad about the pact, they know that 2011 is very near,” he said.

Mr Sata cited PF rebel MPs from Luapula Province as some of those who are pro MMD.
But Dr Machungwa said it would be a mark of naivety for anyone to believe that Mr Sata would accept to be vice-president.

Dr Machungwa said the statement is a political gimmick and that Mr Sata will spring a surprise on Mr Hichilema who he, for now, wants to dupe into believing that he can be made president.

He said instead of making assumptions, Mr Sata must categorically state who is going to be president of the Pact.

Dr Machungwa said Mr Sata is hallucinating by insinuating that the rebel MPs are scared of the possibility of the pact forming government next year.

He said it is infact Mr Sata who is has his figurative tail between his legs because he knows that he will never rule Zambia.

  1. “If we wanted to bulldoze, either UPND or ourselves would have stood in Luena. We are far much stronger in Luena and we prevailed on our candidate in Luena not to stand as an independent candidate. That is one,” Sata, who featured on a HOT FM radio programme, said.

“(2) I have not toured the country denouncing HH. But he has done so. I have not gone to the press, coming from America and say ‘I’m the best because I’m young’. I wasn’t born old.”

  2. Trully there are serious problems in the pact, this not even the begining of the End, but the actual End!!!

  3. That’s the spirit big man! Finally he has spoken. Maybe the PACT is not dead and buried after all. I wonder, is it Bootlicker who has been paying disgruntled PACT MPs to write bad stories in the press or is it just that Times of Zambia has pro MMD propagandists??? VIVA PACT! I hope Sata stays true to his word on accepting position of VP! hope!

  4. Are the sources of this information the same as the Post? How come the POST hasnt mentioned Sata accepting Veepship? I believe both are correct but it is for the people to see what journalists regard as news worth. Imagine a person who only reads one version!

  5. In the name of God I wish to greet the following with much love; MMD Chief B.Licker, Senior Citisen, Sansakuwa, Mwata, The legacy, Odi Uko-2011, I run away to Diaspora but failled and many more wise fellow citisen on the blog, most of you told the world that this Pact in Z was not sustainable, other equally important Citisens called all sorts of names. Surely it feels good to Vendicated. Remember, He who laughs last laughs the best!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Sata tells off HH…age is not a factor

PATRIOTIC Front (PF) leader Michael Sata yesterday launched a scathing attack on pact partner, United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema for attempting to diminish his chances to run for the Republican presidency on account of his age.
But UPND spokesperson Charles Kakoma, who ducked questions on the attack and tried hard to downplay it, only said the pact would pick its presidential candidate after some electoral guidelines had been concluded.

  7. In an unprecedented and shocking stance since the two parties agreed to work together last year, Mr Sata said he was by far the better candidate.
He said age was not a factor for the Republican presidency considering that some of the best presidents Africa had produced were much older than Mr Hichilema.
Mr Sata cited Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade, South Africa’s Jacob Zuma, and post-apartheid South African icon Nelson Mandela as some of the leaders who had performed beyond their age limitations.

  8. He said this during a live radio programme on Hot FM, called the Hot Seat, where he explained that even in the absence of the ‘rebel’ Members of Parliament, PF still emerged as a stronger force than UPND.
Mr Hichilema had told supporters at Lusaka International Airport on arrival from the United States of America (US) in May that many developed and developing countries had shifted from the practice of voting for old leaders.

  9. He cited the example of Tanzania, Russia, United Kingdom and the US, which he said had voted into office younger and intelligent leaders aged between 40 and 50 years.
But Mr Sata said he had never gone round the country to speak ill of Mr Hichilema and dismissed allegations that the PF was treating UPND as a small party in the pact formed last year in which it was agreed that they would field one candidate for the national presidency.

  10. Hey Dr. Machungwa, what do you hope to achieve by by making these comments and remaining a PF MP?? Why not just defect to the MMD. These are double standards, resign from the PF and bugger off to the MMD. Stop attacking Sata from inside his own party. he made you famous! You want to remain in the PF so that if the PACT wins next year, you will say i was always PF. Teti! We will remember cowards like you!

  11. He said Mr Hichilema did not show respect for him as a partner in the pact when he boasted that he was more suitable for the top post because of his younger age.
Mr Sata said PF was strong in Luena Constituency but it had decided to allow UPND to contest the seat on behalf of the pact as a way of showing respect to the UPND.
He, however, said the UPND leaders were holding meetings on the Copperbelt to attack the PF.

  12. ““Why not be vice-president…positions are not my priority, we are concerned about the welfare of the people,” he said.”

Mr. Sata, with all your inconsistencies and lies (including the lie about Idris Derby), why must we believe you?

  13. Ba kaponya without a plan. Chimbwi no pulani. Time wasters. its about time you stopped washing dirty linen in public. MOVE!!!! ODI, chokani munjila.

  14. Mr. Sata way to go. If I had a way, I can arrange for a meeting between the two as a concerned citizen The PACT should work and must work. Why all this HH & Ba Sata. Clear up the mis-understanding. You have given the MMD a fright, they are scared. MMD Dead scared of going out in 2011. Mark my words they are DEAD SCARED.

  15. Entire Northern province Lungu chiefs endorse RB for 2011

ALL the Lungu chiefs in Northern Province have resolved to support President Banda and the MMD in next year’s general elections.Senior Chief Tafuna of the Lungu people said in a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday by his representative Chomba Sikazwe that President Banda has exhibited good leadership in implementing development programmes.

“All the Lungu chiefs have endorsed President Banda and the MMD for the 2011 presidential, parliamentary and local government elections,” Senior Chief Tafuna said. The traditional ruler said President Banda’s good policies, especially in the agriculture sector, have resulted in the country to record a bumper harvest this year.

  16. #16 and !7. This is my prayer too. MMD should not be allowed to continue otherwise there will be more suffering.

  17. Are these people (PACT PEOPLE) talking to each other or they are all operating from pure ignorance of the Pact’s agenda, if any, and each other?! Why so many conflicting and antagonistic statements from everybody (or so it seems)!! GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER B4 IT IS TOO LATE, or you will prove your critics right very soon.

  18. #19 Mwata- I we mabolo yobe, we know Lungus, Mambwes, Inamwangas and Lambyas have never voted for Sata, 2001, 2006, 2010. SO what is new?

  19. We alway said that SATA will never rule Zambia: Now he wants to be Vice President!!! Haaa haa!!!
Pact is over. Lets move to other important issues. PACT is a non-issue now

  20. #5 wapya munzi zikomo. iye ba sata ubufi can you agree to be vice to HH. you see ba kaponya mu PF when we tell you that you are going nowhere you turn to insults. Now you are at each others’ throats. this pact is a blessing to MMD as you will tear each other apart and MMD will just be laughing. The more you remain in thepact the more you weaken yourselves

  21. Whether you like it or not PF is bigger that UPND, but that doesnt mean that Ba SATA should be the pact leader. I hope they sort this out real quick, coz am voting for the pact. Viva PACT!!!!

  22. Mr PFSATA how humble of you. Unfortunately you should have ended on that statement and not going further to humiliate your future president in public as you did on Hot FM. Who would really believe you now. As I said on the other thread this pact had no foundation, one party was outrightly set to use its pact partner. All was well when one party was acting in accordance with the demands of the dominant party. Once the weaker party decided to resist on the Luena by election all hell broke loose. UPND has realised they were been used, and that they were simply escorting Sata to plot one. Sorry Mr PFSATA, its too late to humble yourself, you should have put your acceptance of VP position in writing at consolidation stage, now it is too late to attempt some form of damage control.

  23. #5 Wapya Munzi 2011….thanx for the greeting, blessings to you too.

As for the PACT, well, if one belives what Sata said here then they have a very short memory. The man changes positions so often you would be a fool to believe him. Let UPND and PF go separate ways so that people choose who they want based on their own merits. Pact or no pact, MMD will not rule for ever. At most, another 5 years and thats it. But I would not like MMD to die out like UNIP, could be good nice to have stable parties from which we will choosing from time to time. MMD – Rightist, UPND – Centralists, PF – Lefttists!

  24. The decision of who would be the president or vice president should have been made and agreed upon right at the formation of the Pact. However, it remains to be seen if Mr Sata wholeheartedly means what he says and having said that I also think he deserves to be given the benefit of the doubt.

  25. Logic dictates that Mr. Sata should lead the pact and HH should be Vice Prsident. PF is simply stonger than UPND and for that reason alone Sata should lead. By 2008 elections, PF held sway in Lusaka, Copperbelt, Northern and some parts of Central Provinces while UPND had only Southern and some parts of North Western. Just look at the way the President of the UDA was picked. The strongest party in the pack (UPND) produced the President and Nawakwi and TJ willingly accepted. It would be very selfish of the UPND to refuse Sata to lead.

Of course there will be fallouts but such will be less if Sata leads the pact. Dont worry about rebels’s comments. They are scared that if Sata leads the pact that would mean the end of their political carreers because Sata will be Zambia’s next President

  26. The decision on who would be president or vice president should have been agreed upon right at the formation of the Pact. I am not sure if Mr Sata wholeheartedly means what he says and this remains to be seen, however, having said that I think he deserves to be given the benefit of the doubt.

  27. Whether Sata is mad or not, consistent or inconsitent he’s more sellable than HH at the moment. People love Sata’s madness and thats how come he’s popular in urban areas where the flow of information is quick and his views are known. Let HH be Vice President. After forming Govt together with Sata, he will be Presidential candidate in 2016 or even earlier as Sata is quickly wasting away. By 2016, Sata would have been history.

  28. SATA and HH pls tell the many Zambian supporters if u are not serious so they can start supporting this tourist R.B. After all when the lion is hungry it can eat even grass. We dont want time wasters.

  29. Well Sata has always been history as far as our political life is concerned. The moment he was dribbled by his former chamba smoking mate FTJ he lost the plot. As things stand, we shall only miss his mis-timed comedy in everything.

  30. Why do we pretend about real issues? The real issue isnt just about winning the next elections or removing MMD from power but how the president of the PACT will treat the partner> This is the real danger but we choose to gloss over it and relegate it to the peripherals. What would come out of this PACT if they are to win would probably be more retrogressive than everything bad MMD has done. The first priority would be for the senior partner entrenching his stay to the detriment of the PACT. In short Tsvangirai and Mugabe will tell you. The real solution is for the two to dissolve and form one party. For now it might seem all good removing MMD but what lies ahead of us might be too catastrophic to handle. We need serious planning and look at the deliverables beyond removing MMD

  31. Life maker,
i see your point. But do you honestly think that just because Mr Sata is “sellable” at the moment, that makes him the best choice for the country?
If that alone becomes the general consensus in the country, then we will end up doing in 2011 what we did in 1991. We will vote for Sata, not because he’s going to be a good leader, but because we want to get MMD out. I hope you see my point.

  32. I dont think it is a question of who is sellable or not for the PACT. In fact this is partly the problem,.HH and Sata both realise that this is an opportune time to lead because the numbers are on their side. What causes the split is tribalism and ideological beliefs. This is why the PACT was so promising. Alas the final issue is that of the leader. The majority want to see MMD go not that they are bad but because they have been in power for long during which time the other politicians have become so impoverished that they need to also loot. Some of these politicians have been on GRZ payroll half their lifetimes and outside politics/GRZ jobs, they cant survive. Those on PF loathe Tonga dominion and those from UPND loathe Satas style, bemba tactics of dominating others. End result, MMD wins

  33. There is no two- way about the PACT. When UDA was formed as an aliance between FDD, UNIP and UPND the alliance choce UPND coz it was the party believed strong enough to win as it was the largest and strongest Party.

I thought the UNPD has learned from their experience. In this PACT it is a well known FACT that PF is larger and stronger than UPND, hence HH should just face reality that he be a Vice if he realy has a herat for the Zambians. They can agree that UPND takes over in 2016. This is the honest way to go about it and we should not beat by the bush. Lets face reality as it is.

  34. :d that’s the way it should be. attitude is the best way of succeding with the amount of pressure that the pact is going through. Sata is the Man, whether vice president or chief, this country can move. viva PACT salute the cobra

  35. Amafi yeka yeka pa zed. Awe mwe!. MMD, PAct all shiiiiiiit awe mwe twachla sana bakoswe imwe mulia sosegi ifwe chiwawa, nakalembula, nabombwe twachula bakoswe. No work I live under a cent not a dollar iwme u live under donar aid na copper mines aid.

  36. Well, Sata is doing what he does best – being inconsistent. Now he wants to be VP, whilst he was castigating HH for saying the country needs a young president! Was it not the same Sata who recently said that he would keep on trying to be president until he succeeded? All this hogwash about a pact that never was. We were asking last month what exactly had been launched but all people would say is ‘viva pact’, like that is all you need to govern a country. Where was the shadow cabinet and where was the harmonised manifesto? Just silence and yet Sata is supposed to be a man of action who gets things done!

  37. Sansakuwa@41. Understand the English language or should i send you Encarta tool? He is saying, it does not matter which post he holds as long as there is knew govt under new part.

  38. If sata can publicly state he can be vice president of the pact if the two parties agreed, why then should HH be naive about the same? one thing UPND/HH must realize is that the people will never forgive them in rising their hopes that them two parties coming together can ouster the lazos in government today and if HH opts to go together with MMD he will forever live a sweet dream of becoming zambian president that will never come true, anyway at the end of the day it’s his choice and his party members.

    DR MACHUNGWA TRAITOR …………………………….

  39. Greedy and power hungry with no plan for Zambia but thier relatives and their pockets. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuull Shit.

  40. That chief Tafuna of the Lungu naikuta beans na kumbi elyo alalanda. Hasen’t he seen how his people suffer in mbala and mpulungu to say the least. These small chiefs they think when they give them pajero’s and 3 millions then to them all is ok. I also urge the pact to form a shadow cabinet like they do here in the UK so that the other guys know how serious they are. Pull up your socks guys. Sata is ready for VIP whats wrong with machungwa. Ayopa 2 billion ati izabwela when sata comes to power.

  41. Let Sata becomes the Vice President so that they can remove these fools out of the Government. So much corruption in this Government including kafupi. He should be tried after forming the next government.

  42. This is the way to go. Thank you Mr President for coming out in the Open, whether any of these monkeys like it or not the Pact is there, now we need to take the Pact to the Ordinary Zambian, lets all unite and make this Pact against the MMD!!! May GOD CONTINUE BLESSING ZAMBIA.

  43. #42 Wanting a new govt and then supporting Sata is contradictory in the highest order. How can Sata be an agent for change? How can third-term machete man be a person to entrust the country in 2011? We dont need for change’s sake. Why should I entrust the governance of the country to people who formed a pact without doing their homework? These issues should have been ironed out way before an annoncement of the pact was even made. You think these are the kind of people who will be strategic about Zambia’s future? Instead of bickering amongst themselves, they should be selling their vision to the people of Zambia. I will not vote for the unknown. If this is the kind of govt the pact will bring in then ‘no thank-you’.

  44. #28n Kays, Why shouldn’t Rupiah open a Super Market in Zambia. Have you left your mind where you can’t reach it. Rupiah is the President for all Zambians and there are 200 Zambians with jobs at Woodlands Pick and Pay. He went to encourage the owners to open more out lets in Zambia so that more people have jobs. Please remember that 4000 people applied for the 200 jobs.

  45. I think all the points you have exhausted all points. My final suggestion for anyone who cares about the pact to copy all this and post unnonymously to both HH and PF. Maybe vinga nvele. what do you think?

  46. I think all the points have been exhausted. My final suggestion is for anyone cares for this pact to copy all this and post it unnonymously to both Henikeni and cycle mata

  47. georgeWbushman says:
    # 42, bufi mwandi efyo chaba chi satana!

We can not allow a thug close to power. HH must quickly find another alternative. Leave the snake alone. Do not be duped by king cobra saying he can be vp. He had said exactly that in 2008 & sent guy scot & lubinda to hold you up all afternoon at Pamozi hotel while he campaigned in Kafue. HH get it into your head, a thug is a thug period. Join MMD as pact NOW! Better than evil.

  48. #35 and 37 MK: Thats sense you have said fellow zambian. Its not all about change just for the sake of change. MMD in 1991 choose FTJ just because he was salleble and what did the country get? Some one even has the guts to say weather Sata is mad or not he is sellable so he must lead the pact – what a pathetic way to think! Thats why people say the calibre of some Pact supporters is below par.

#48 Sansakuwa….you kind of thinking is exactly mine. How can one shout ‘change!’ and in the next breath ask for the same old, tired, re-cylced politicians? With this attitude Zambia is better off with federal states so that each people can govern themselves according to their value systems otherwise we are headed to nowhere!

  49. No wonder he called HH an ‘under 5.’ This is political dribbling of a kind. HH will look very greedy and ambitious and Sata looks very patient and patriotic. Like a snake he is taking his time to bite the young man!

  50. #47, Mukabe come 2011:
‘… now we need to take the Pact to the Ordinary Zambian, lets all unite and make this Pact against the MMD!!! May GOD CONTINUE BLESSING ZAMBIA’

It’s supposed to be a people-driven PACT, so why take it to the people? I would laugh if it weren’t so sad. For me, God continues to bless Zambia for as long as SATA is not our president. Count your blessings.

  51. While it can not be denied that due to human weakness which has lead to selfishness within the PACT, it also very true that these weaknesses have been aggravated by MMD functionaries. The MMD have spent a lot of money at their disposal as a party in government to pay weak minded Members of opposition parties so that they can make reckless statements against the union of the PF and UPND. Of course both Sata and HH would want to be President. This not only peculiar to the PACT, it is common in MMD. The only difference in MMD is that everybody wants to show their loyalty to Mr. Rupiah Banda other wise if there was proper democracy in MMD, many people were going to announce their ambitions openly. The suppression of freedom of choice in MMD can be traced to the third term debacle where…

  52. The suppression of freedom of choice in MMD can be traced to the third term debacle where members who could have effectively challenged for party leadership were barred from attending the conventional thus leaving Chiluba as the sole candidate. In fact in it early days, KK refered to the MMD as a group of malcontents only bent on usurping power. Indeed they were a group of crooks and mandrax dealers, but due to the mood in the country at that time the MMD managed to remove KK/Unip from power. As soon as MMD is out of office all members will leave and most of them will cite dictatorship in the MMD as the cause of their fall.

  53. Sata for Veepee! Everybody knows that Vice Presidents (they are not even half presidents) don’t carry any power in Zambia so why would Sata relegate himself? Why would he have formed PF if he did not want to be president? Look guys we are not fo.ols even if you are, so don’t waste your precious time trying to feed us fodder.

  54. #56 If the pact was built on a strong foundation, then none of these things would happen. How can you talk about the suppression of freedom of choice in MMD when PF has never had and does not intend to have a convention any time soon? All appointments in PF come through Sata. There is no party structure to speak of and yet you have the check to throw stones at MMD?

  55. Well, well, well.

Only a very dull person would accept to go into politics to forever remain a party cadre. Why do people get into politics in the first place, if it is not to aspire for the highest office, that of the presidence?

It is for the same reasons why Sata and HH are both aspiring to lead the PACT into State House.

And it is, of course, also for similar reasons why Katele Kalumba, Magande, Mpombo and others have been aligning themselves for consideration to be adopted as possible presidential candidates for their party. Only the feeble willed and low lifers want to for ever be boot lickers, party cadres and the like. Period.

  56. #28 KAYS YOU CAN ASK PICK N PAY WHY THEY DIDNT ASK SATA, HH, MPOMBO OR AREA MP SCOTT TO GO AND OPEN THE SHOP. WHY DID PICK N PAY INVITE RB. MORE YOUNG GIRLS AND BOYS ARE NOW IN GAINFUL EMPLOYEMENT AND OUR LOCAL FARMERS HAVE A READY MARKET WERE TO SELL THEIR PRODUCE. EVEN BUSES AND TAXIS HAVE ADDED ANOTHER BUSY ROUTE FOR BUSINESS

  57. Someone said “The devil you know is better than the one you don’t know” and thus, I urge the mighty UPND Group to stay in the PF-UPND PACT because Mr PF/Sata MC knows what is at stake for him while the POST and PF cadres all over the world do not agree with Mr PF/Sata MC’s resolve to support HH for Zambian President (see the POST Editorial Conmment of today).

When both Mr PF’s Sata MC and Mr UPND’s HH continually announced that the PACT will stand, I just knew it that Mr Sata MC was ready to become HH’s and Zambian Vice-President because of this opportunity for Mr Sata MC to help bring in better politics in and best life for Zambia.

Bravo Mr PF/Sata MC for agreeing to be HH’s Vice-President and continue encouraging your supporters to now support HH for Zambian…

  58. This is what gets me, the PACT is there to effect change and if Sata truly wants to work for the people then the leadership should have been sorted a long time ago. The fact that they have not stated this and it being supposedly strategic, shows poor management already. 2011 is soon, and the PACT need to get their act together so its clear who we are voting for.

  59. We must all the time remember that the Times and the Zambia Daily Mail will not publish a story like this unless the MMD has something to gain from it. Not so hidden agendas are what drives the media’s coverage in Zambia. Blo\\\\

  60. If Michael Sata(PF) and Hikainde Hichilema(UPND) cannot UNITE two(2) organisations, what makes them think they can UNITE 12million Zambians. What makes them think so?

  61. At the MMD convention, Sata unilaterally and clandestanely dribbled the likes of Arthur wina, Mulemba etc by suddenly propelling Kafupi Chiluba to the helm, overlooking prior mutual agreement that Chiluba would not contest. This demonic snake should never be accorded the opportunity to the reigns of power . He is intolerant to dissenting views and his vernom will afflict such. He has an intense perchant for profanity laced diatribes against other tribes, publicly denigrating them as a way of subjugation and ever hell bent on propelling his tribe to supremacist level s. He should know that hegemony will not be condoned. His posture makes him unfit for a rainbow president and as such won`t amass enough votes to win the national presidency.

  65. Ba SATA thats the thinking of a leader. For sure no one owns these political offices. It is just a matter of time. Good thinking

  66. lets not larg behind and think that SATA cant be president of this nation Alas to me mr. SATA is the man who has groomed him self and reched the matuare age to rule the country by all cost if there is a man who has gone through a lot is SATA him self. WHY……………..why……….do you want to dimonise hime like this if he is chosen no one will and can stop it
