Vodafone Ghana is presently going through turbulent times as some major distributors and dealers in its products are withdrawing from working with the company, investigations by The Enquirer have revealed.
The Enquirer can confirm that six out of the 10 distribution companies do not have anything to do with Vodafone Ghana presently, because of unfriendly business policies being implemented by Mr. Amon Jere, a Zambian, who is the head of Sales and Distribution.
In April 2009, Vodafone re-engaged 10 old Ghana Telecom national dealers to operate as exclusive regional dealers in all parts of the country.
When The Enquirer contacted some of the directors of the accredited dealers, they confirmed that they are no longer operational due to the policies of Amon Jere, the Zambian, and have taken Vodafone to court.
The dealers claimed they were made to provide GH¢1 million guarantee, provide a working capital of GH¢500,000, each of them was forced to buy two vans for road shows, employ a minimum of 150 freelancers, and open not less than seven shops with staff in their respective regions.
The accredited dealers accused Amon Jere of deceiving them and being the cause of their indebtedness. The directors of these distribution houses complained bitterly that after incurring so much cost to set up their structures, Vodafone itself is also selling directly to retailers at a lower price (10% discount) and thereby preventing the retailers to deal with them (the dealers).
The dealers purchase the recharge products at 8 per cent, while the retailers get at lower rate with 10 per cent discount. Amon Jere, 34, is the very person, who sometime last year, was alleged to have insulted Ghanaians, saying their lazy and questioned the standard of Ghanaian education during a training session of the Vodafone sales team at La Palm Hotel in Accra.
Vodafone is alleged to be paying Amon Jere US$30,000 plus 1% of the total sales of Vodafone recharge cards every month!

This Amon Jere is a disgrace not only to himself and his clan, but Zambia as a whole. His huge salary has gotten to his head. He should humble himself and come back to earth, he should not think he is the most brilliant person where he is, he is just prevaleged. Watusebanya!
Its ok. Ajere sungani bwino company namwe, koma iyo salary ni-ikulu mukotumako kuno
Aaah Our own Zambian seem to be in trouble? who is this Amon Jere bane? lets hope is he safe and did not insult Ghanaians. It shows sometime how we Zamabians take such. We are insulted left right and centre by Chinese in the companies they ran and we keep quite.
I know Amon from the Unza days. He was always very enterprising despite having a modest background. In first year he had a freezer in his room and used to sell Twikatane meat prdts, thus earning himself the nickname “dodi” (al fayed).
I believe before Ghana he was at Celtel in the same capacity. He deserves his earning – wish him all the best.
Awe ba Jere naimwe ibwelenimo.Too bad i hope this has nothing to do with xenophobia.
4 Continued. The full nickname was Dodi – the meat magnet!
Zambian graduates are used to theory(moving around with bis text books lol). when it comes to practical awe sure, but we kaponyas we believe in ACTION!!!!!
Is he rerated to Dixon?
I have cracked all sorts of crazy maths and physics, and that salary is very much of a dream. One thing for sure is that being humble more especially in a foreign country is a desirable quality.
Make your money bro, make Zambia proud and then come back home,no need to go out there and start feeling like you are some Newton or Faraday in Ghana.
Typical of the Zambian type. Kulibonesha!! The “know-all” arrogance also inherent in RB who has refused to listen to the voice of reason over the Mobile Hospitals
ZESCO seem to be treading the same path of self destruct by selling its product to foreign infestors at cheaper rates than it is to its indigenous customers forgetting that infestors will leave at some point in tome where as the Zamia consumers will always be there.
British Gas has just posted a very HUGE profit after reducing its tariffs thereby attracting a very significant increase of its customer base by 800,000 new customers.
This is the problem of Zambian bloggers. Even when you have been cheated you easily believe. You don’t read objectively but subjectively. You have joined LT poor reporting of gathering one sided news. Jere has not yet responded and we don’t know what Jere has. There is always a second version of the story. Jere cannot just grow big headed unless he knows the really weaken of these people whom he was dealing with on behalf of Vodaphone. The good thing is that our Jere is enjoy more than Zambia national football teach Coach. Not even the president, since RB get $2,000 according to Maureen Mwanawasa who gets $1.000.Obaba Jere, dyapo mwandi. Usanvelela aba banthu who post comments after having nothing to chew and to do just to shake their stress on LT.
The Ghanaian are just not happy that a Zambian is leading that company in marketing sales. They just want their own man. We know how proud the Ghanaians are.
Quite a decent salary, but don`t insult the citizens. Those are your family now that your home is far away!
Enjoy your sweat Mr Meat Magnate>..
Indeed you are lazy and you education should be questioned if you can’t differentiate between ‘they are’ and ‘their’!
Amon Jere is indeed enterprising. Zambians, don’t throw tantrums against Amon he has brains than some of these bloggers throwing mud on him. If you are unable to earning a living abroad, don’t throw rubbish on others. For Ghana Telecoms to get Amon, they saw substance in him. He worked at Zain for some time. I remember when he was at UNZA he used to work with some big company while studying. Besides, as one has pointed out, Amon has not spoken, he has not given his side, and some of you chaps want him killed. get a life
Not bad for a34 year old. I was earning a meagre £3500 at his age. Now, I earn in excess of fifteen million ………kwacha lol. Jere keep it up!
Jere has the blood of getters thus where he is. For him to tell off some lazy bones must have taken some provocation. Such a character can survive well enough even in a desert. Let us learn from Dodi jere.
I know of characters who while at school were selling chickens, at primary school – this is Dodi’s type! Bauze mwandi bavesese!
Bad Zambian representative! Nabweleko aJere pomwe mulikalimbe tubwelesera manyazi ambiri.
Nizee…there are very few stories of rugs to riches, babombe mwana.Show them what Zedians are made of.Remember those michopo you used to sell and now manje vodafone you deserve the best mwandi.
It may interest you to know that a Zambian Lady was Ghanian business person of the yr (Former Barclays Z MD, and subsequently Barclays Ghana MD), Zambeef was also taken into Ghana, with a very young Zambian being instrumental in the set up and initial operations. Another young Zambian lady is Director of legal and Corp services of company belonging to Alico Dangote (Nigeria) who is argueably the richest african ( US$ billions)
Thats Zambians doing there thing, give credit where its due and recognise game.
The foolish and naive believe whatever they read on the Internet without any question.
We need to hear what other reporters are saying and – most importantly – what Jere himself is saying about these accusations. Which is just what they are – mere accusations.
the ghanians are just not happy that zambians have taken top jobs there. They should know that zambia is zambia…guys work hard like jere. hehe ubune muli ka 30 pin dollars
I agree. Why do you crucify a silent person? If you analyse carefully, Amon hasn’t responded and was just trying to improve the image of vodafone and add a cooperate image to all dealers. His agression to improving business may have had some negative impact on some dealers and that wasn’t the intention.
As for #7, my advise is- a zambian graduate is as practical and respectiful to every zambian and should equally be respected and analysed on an individual basis as any other zambian. zambian graduates are contributing massively in many other economies and Amon is one hard working example. Let us unite and rule after 2011, depending on which side you are. Good salary for #16 and more importanly for Jere. You will need to invest in our nation- beautiful!
Given LA’s bad english I dont know whether the 30,000 is the annual with additional monthly bonuses or if it is 30,000 plus additional monthly bonuses. Honestly if he is making 30 grand a month then I am proud of him. However that would mean a 360,000 annual salary and his job would have been very competitive even attracting Harvard MBAs, in which case he would not have survived given his qualifications. Not to sound imperialist but I am not sure we have such kind of jobs in Africa given that the cost of living is not that high.Honestly, if vodafone had that kind of money to pay one individual, they would be a much bigger company and would’t be experiencing the crap they are purported to be experiencing with Amon. All that said, the the ZAMBEEF guy is shining!!!
Ba justice, do you know Amon’s qualification for you to think he cant compete a Havard MBA? In case you dont know there are Zambians working in Zambia, with Zambian qualifications get the eqwuivalent of what Amon gets. Hope you are not abroad and earn a fraction of that and think you are doing fine!
Some blogs here remind me of someone who attended an international conference and he could remember was the good food and drink but not the substance.
Frankly, is the issue Jere salary, or the adverse effects of his marketing practices on the dealers?
Kibakimani …Amon was my classmate at UNZA so I know his qualifications. I am not disputing his salary I am just wondering how efficient the compensation would be.This is because that is the salary of A SURGEON in the USA, and would be only 40 grand less than the US president.Even harvard MBA grads have an average of 150,000 a year. If it is true, and I hope it is, he is grossly overpaid. When I am done with school I will only start at 90,000 a year and will be nowhere near that pay grade. I am proud of Zambians when they do well, but I have been deceived by LA reporting before.
Kwathu you make a good point…..ni nkhani ya kan’gono…have you heard that song???? We will skip all the important details and be focussed on the dollar signs!!!
Margaret Mwanakatwe was equally kicked out in Accra when she was Barclays Bank Ghana Managing Director (2004-8). She was replaced by a Ghanaian. Those people have a damn complex for Zambians. Amon Chibiya President Citibank Zambia had a stint in Accra with Citi Bank Ghana and am sure he will tell you stories too. Margaret should still be with UBA, I think.
Continued. I meant Saviour Chibiya in 28. I mixed up with his father’s name.
It bothers me when people bad mouth others even on issues which are one sided. why hasn’t ?odafone fired Amon if he is as bad as some of you good-for-nothing bloggers? All you know about blogging is negative reports without analysing issues. Grow up. As for his salary, I hope Amon is earning $30K per month. A contract must have been signed so what is this fuss about???? Grow up and support fellow Zambians.
#10 Kwathu British Gas operates in a liberalised energy sector. There are more than 5 companies in the UK electricity market. Zambia on the other hand is a captive or monopoly market. Consumers have nowhere to go other than ZESCO. ZESCO can do as it pleases even screw up its customers because it knows the customers have no alternative! For this reason dear Kwathu your advice is redundant!
Princess..
While the number of competitors in market could be a factor, I Affordability will encourage a lot more people to liquidate their energy debt, besides a lot more customers connecting to ZESCO.
Good Evening
Well, I do not have all the facts to this story so I think it would be unfair to criticise Mr. Jere anyhow. The man must be smart and well-qualified for his job, or else he would not have gotten the job of Sales & Distributions Manager.
What I know, however, is that the turbulence is not only in Ghana. Vodafone has generally been on the sour side of business and lots of customers in Europe (including myself) have tried them and left dissatisfied with their conditions of service. The whole company needs to stop ripping off the consumers and take a leaf from other service providers.
Its $30 00 per annum, peanuts but alright for Ghana. He is doing a good job, Ghanaians should NOT be xenophobic, let them grow up.
It’s shocking that some people think he is over paid. He is head of sales and distribution. If he is not properly renumerated there’s a potential for him to defraud the company because of his position. We don’t know what exactly happened. So lets not judge.
Jere ndiwe nsimbi mwandi. Those ghanaians are xhenophobic and jealousy of your achievements. They cant just accept that a Zambian can teach them marketing skills hence his questioning of their education standards for failure of grasping simple marketing techniques.
9, Yes agreed that salary is a bit of a dream. But before we jump to conclusions and believe these stories and salaries, we must check the credentials of the news paper The Enquirer/ Ghana. Could be no more than a hot air newspaper, like our very own Post, to be read with a pinch of salt. Remember our Barclays Bank lady, Margaret Mwanakatwe, went through a similar ordeal in the same country, until the government there saw the nonsense and went to her rescue.
I think its real because those salaries are a possibilty. Half the mechanics from Catterpillar Zambia are here in Australian mines mines getting 160,000- 165,000 Aus $ per annum. Honestly some days you earn what would be earned in a month from back home. The Senior mine staff get a lot more than that here and thats the reason a lot of us mine employees have gone back to school here after working for a number of years. So for somebody with a degree he should definately earn that. well done and good on him. So if any of you have heavy duty mechanic relatives get them here and they will earn not get less than $100,000 a year for a start. Check mycareer.com.au for jobs as Desiel Fitters. The rates are between $35-49 per hour less overtime penalties which is double time after 8 hours.
The nigga is making lots of pepper, that’s shud more than Mbesuma’s salary. If I were him, Ghanian bitch.es wud be introuble.lol! Ofcos the Nigga is a bit conny! I know him from UNZA days with his twikatane.
Ba Justice ,I have lived in Ghana managing a very big project for an International Chinese company .Let me tell u that the cost of living in countries like Ghana ,Kenya ,Zambia is very high actually higher than parts of the USA and the UK .For your information there are so many people in Africa who are making more than USD 30pin per month . If you are abroad my friend ,learn to visit Africa before u are completely deceived to think people working in Africa earn less . Myself am based in China and I coordinate projects for my company in Africa and Asia ,just with a humble Bachelors degree and only 27 years old am also making about USD15,000 a month with allowances .It is something that most bloggers would not believe cos they think the Chinese don’t pay much.
Nowadays Mr.Justice its not only the west or western companies that pay well ,many foreign companies are making too much money out of Africa and its justifiable when they pay some of these great brains like Jere what he is getting .Mr.Justice its not only a Harvard MBA that can make someone shine in Africa business , u need someone who understands the complications involved in African business not the theories they are teaching u at Harvard . I did my degree in China and the Chinese trust me cos i do understand the Chinese and African business culture and am boss to people with more than 10 years work experience with masters degrees and PHDs but I only have less than 5 years work experience my brother .Am not gonna let money get to my head ,I will continue to work hard and be like Amon
Mr China and CAT power have said it all. I am surprised that ba justice think that Jere is overpaid. I am at a mine here in zambia and have guys with degrees and diplomas who are getting that much and even higher. Sounds funny that i interact with lots of people in supervisory positions from all over and with certificates, who have flocked to our Lumwana mine and getting much higher than USD40,000/ month. That is what Africa can offer- more than many harvard MBA holders. The cost of living is generally high in Africa, simply because the house i rent in Lusaka is expensive (by any standard),the car, phone, computer, etc i buy are imports from Europe/ Asia (it is cheaper in europe).
Is that a western complex? -Go to africa and pay them peanuts. they will survive. Sorry! not anymore.
Very poor journalism. Almost like a story from a bar……we do not even know who or what this “Enquirer” is…….!!
I am originally from India.I came to Zambia 10 years ago to work for a pharmceutical company owned by a Zambian millionaire($$$) of Indian origin who now resides in England.
When I came to Zambia I had with me only a shirt on my back and a Zambian work permit.
I was earning $3000 per month plus accomodation.
I was employed in the sales and disribution.
I worked five straight years and saved.
I went back to India and organised my self and made contacts.
After 1 year in India I came back to Zambia and opened up my own pharmacy which has grown from strength to strength!
I now employ close to 20 full time Zambian employees and I am my own boss!
3 years ago I made my first 1000000($$)Million!Now how about that!
Generally I feel that there are a lot of opportunities when u r a foreiner
39, last week I saw an advert in the papers about mining jobs in Aussie for experienced Engineers. The monthly salary was equivalent to USD7,000. Will take your claim with a pinch of salt, maybe you work for a rich mine.
Amon is a hard working man and a very straight forward person who would call a spade a spade and if said that he saw it in you Ghanaian. I have lived with him in the same house from the time he was in grade 5 primary school to the time he was about to finish his secondary. Zambians let us not insult our fellow Zambians.
You can definitely see your expertise within the paintings you write. The sector hopes for even more passionate writers like you who are not afraid to say how they believe. Always follow your heart.
You actually make it appear so easy along with your presentation however I find this matter to be really something which I believe I might by no means understand. It sort of feels too complex and very large for me. I am having a look forward in your next submit, I will attempt to get the hold of it!
My brother suggested I may like this blog. He was entirely right. This submit truly made my day. You cann’t consider just how so much time I had spent for this info! Thank you!
Nice post. I used to be checking continuously this blog and I am impressed! Extremely helpful info specially the ultimate section :) I take care of such info a lot. I used to be looking for this particular info for a very long time. Thank you and best of luck.
