The Committee of Citizens has urged losing candidates in the Chifubu and Luena parliamentary and local government by elections to graciously accept the outcomes of the elections.
Committee Executive Director Gregory Chifire says this is because the elections were held in a peaceful and transparent manner, adding that issues of mal-practices were almost nonexistent.
Mr Chifire told ZANIS in a telephone interview that there is no need for any political party to cry foul after the results have been announced because the playing field was leveled.
He further stressed that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) made every effort to ensure that the electoral code of conduct was respected by all the participating political parties in the two constituencies.
Mr Chifire has since dismissed accusations by a named opposition political party leader that the ruling MMD were collecting national registration cards and voter cards details from some electorates in Chifubu, saying the allegations were baseless.
“We have been here in Chifubu monitoring how all the political parties are conducting their campaigns and I can tell you that none of our monitors have witnessed any incident of that nature. I can safely say that those accusations are unfounded”, he stated.
And Mr Chifire says it is regrettable that some politicians can take advantage of the poverty that people are facing in the country to use them to commit criminal acts.
The Committee Executive Director was referring to an incident that happened in Ndola where some people were hired to block Vice President George Kunda’s motorcade.
Mr Chifire said it was appalling to note that there are some leaders that were so selfish as to hire innocent people to do acts that were detrimental to the development of the country’s young democracy.
He has however praised Republican President Rupiah Banda for ordering the police on the Copperbelt to release the ten PF cadres saying the President showed that he truly was a matured and tolerant leader.

mambazo,
You will be more respected if you just waited for results of a closed up election or depend on reliable sources. Just where are you pulling your illusions that MMD has lost in Luena and Chifubu? MMD has just wipped clean the 1000 votes lead of Milupi. In Chifubu is deep troubled waters with the final outcome far from certainity. Yes in Chimwemwe ward yes PF has won with a dismal 691 votes giving them a lead of only 51 votes in a ward of 4,320 registered votes. I doubt if this good for Sata’s 2011 single entry? In Northern, Luapula and Eastern province ward elections MMD has swept them all. The outcome challenges the myth that Luapula and Northern are PF sanctuaries. What a myth!
PF has retained its held Chifubu parliamentary seat in a historic apathic election ever seen in Zambia. A 27, 000 plus constituency that enjoyed sending MPs to Parliament with not less 18,000 votes has today dismally send one at less than 7,000 votes. After extrapolating this, how does one see his prospects in future highly open general elections?
MMD should stop using FTJ for their campaigns. Chimwemwe PF, Chifubu PF.
Chimwemwe is Kitwe and Kitwe is PF. We want Kafupi to go and decampaign again. Share waste of resources by the President and his VP for compaigning in a no go area. MMD will surely walk alone on the Copperbelt because people have suffered as if copper is not mined there. I want to hear the VP announcing the day building of a high school will start. The story is clear people want change and change is on the horizon. The fact is we cannot pretend all is well when the majority of the people live on less than a dollar a day. Highly taxed workers have achieved one thing; POVERTY.
Well, everyone in Zambia today has their own tribal party, PF for Bembas, UPND for Tongas and MMD for Nyanjas. So why not the Milupi party for Loziz? Its tribalisation of Zambia Chiluba started, you harvest the fruits of Kafupi’s “sweat” and enjoy them silently.
#15. I live in Chifubu and i can tell you that funerals are orders of the day. This is attributed mainly to poverty.Alot of people have died recently mainly due to high poverty levels in these areas. Therefore, we expect less voters. Howvever, 2011 will be different especially with the new registration of voters taking place no.
It is clear that less voters turned out for both the Chifubu and Luena elections. One would expect a different senario for 2011 in the presidential elections. The ruling party despite winning some council elections can be seen as clearly bound to loose in 2011 unless they implement some drastic changes to the message they are putting accross. To an average person, the dramatic acquittal of Chiluba, his being put at the centre of campaigns, the move to remove the abuse of office clause in the constitution and the growing incidences of unchecked violence by senior govt official seen to talk about the MMD being very corrupt and out of tune with the wishes of the people.
