Katuba Member of Parliament Jonas Shakafuswa

THE Anti-Money Laundering Investigations Unit of the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested Katuba Member of Parliament Jonas Shakafuswa’s brother, Charles for money laundering activities involving more than K200 million.

DEC public relations manager John Nyawali said Mr Shakafuswa, 49, of New John Laing Township in Lusaka, was arrested together with his two nephews, Farai Mhende, 23, of Emmasdale residential area in Lusaka and Victor Banda, 33, from Libala in the capital city.

Mr Nyawali said Mr Shakafuswa, acting together with his younger brother Ephraim Shakafuswa and their two nephews swindled Sunburn Trading and Enterprises of Hungary out of K201 million by purporting to have secured land in Livingstone, which they wanted to lease to the company.

Mr Nyawali said in a statement released in Lusaka yesterday that a manhunt has been launched for Ephraim who is currently on the run.

“The Shakafuswa brothers claimed that they had secured land near the Victoria Falls from Zesco Limited for Sunburn Traders to construct some recreation facilities.

“The money was transferred to the Shakafuswa brothers and their two nephews through electronic money transfer using an identified commercial bank and an international money transfer organisation,” he said.

Mr Nyawali said the trio have been released on police bond and will appear in court soon.

  1. Another success story, keep the fight going. Simple Zambians have no access to such investors. These so called legacy holders are the worst culprits when it comes to corrupt activities. First it was Mushili and child, now its Shakas brothers, embarassing they were abusing his position as Minister.

  2. I’m sure this stroy is making good rounds in MMD. The story is from Govt., owned and MMD Party Controlled Times Of Zambia. Where is Jonas Shakafuswa’s involvement for Ba LT to show his picture? Target the brothers not Jonas period. If Jonas is involved then it would be OK but to show his picture when he is not involved is smear campaign.

  3. the headline is misleading, Jonas is not at all involved but why such a headline, and as though that is not enough you go ahead and publish his picture!!!I hope he sues you.

  4. Ronnie Shikapwasha accuzed The Post of playing double standardz in their reporting about RB. What standard would suit the kind of reporting exhibited by the Times of Zambia here?

  5. DEC should also investigate MMD for money laundering of revenue collected by Jevic as inspection fees for all vehicles imported into the country. I bet this is the source of money Thandi is dishing out throughout the country now. How do you surrender the collection of revenue to an ‘imperialist’ company?

  6. ## 2 kapuli.. how about that mmd bytch, when is she going to be arrested for issuing a fake kacheki? Mulenga my assssy you are pure LT under blogger!

  7. What is happening is total travesty of justice, unacceptable. If there is even the slightest hint of someone not supporting RB and his cronies then the whole state machinery comes down on you like a ton of bricks. I’m not in favour of Shakas but why the swift action that is not visiting those on the “right” side of the govt?? Justice can only be worth its salt if it’s seen and experienced to be applied equally. Anything below this has its rightful name, INJUSTICE!

  8. What would expect fro LT,they only COPY & PASTE, why put Shakafuswa’s pic when he is not even involved in the case, your news misleads! try your Copy & paste from other media sources.

  9. Perhaps LT should not have used the picture of Ronnie but it is also spurious to claim that this case has come about because of political vindictiveness. What we need to do is to ensure that the guys get a fair trial and we need to resist the temptation to make wild speculations on the case until we get the opportunity to hear all the facts in court. We also need to be mindful of the principle that a person is innocent until proven guilty.

  10. The headline is misleading. Yes,journalists have to come up with ”catchy” headlines but this is trully misleading especially because of the picture used, i also hope Jonas Shakafuswa sues LT so that you pull up your socks.

  11. There is no difference between the political atmosphere in zimbabwe and zambia. I only fear that MMD may be creating its own grave by dealing with its opposing members. These guys may have problems or be involved in these scandles outrightly but am yet to see a “in-good-book with MMD member” being persecuted as they are doing to MPOMBO,MAGANDE ans SHAKA. ……Its like Russia-Putin will always be head even though Medvedev is president. …. KAFUPI is still rulling zambia-you like it or not.

  12. LT, putting Jona’s picture on this story tells the world a lot about your hidden agenda.
Remove Jona’s picture from this story. period!:-w

  13. #7, the eye… i agree with you. am wondering why they have even put up Jona’s pic, when he is not even involved at all.Is it because he is in bad terms with RB. what kind of reporting is this? TIMES OF ZAMBIA has been reduced to something else.

  14. This report by TOZ is verbatim, as reported by DEC spokesperson Nyawali. Jonas is not involved though and he should not be mentioned unless he is guardian of his elderly siblings.

  15. The headline is highly misleading and had I been Shakas, I would consult my attorneys because for all purposes and intent, this headline amounts to slunder of of the worst order. Shakas has nothing to do with this scum and one onders why he has to be put on the front page of the article.

  16. LT you need to start getting serious with issues, why use Jonas’ picture when he is not involved at all. this is poor copy and paste LT. start working and stop trying to mislead pipo at expense of MMD????

  17. Can someone please enlighten me why pa Zed this is called “money laundering”, in other countryies it is called “fraud”, “obtaining money by false pretences” etc. “Money laundering” is when you have money that you have made illegally e.g. by trafficking drugs, then you put it into a legitimate business so it looks like it is “clean”. Misleading definitions

  18. #28 Ndalya live: Wikala kwisa iwe! That picture looks dodge -ya! Shaka’s elemoneka kwati naumfwa bwino sana! Hope we will see the whole picture…

  19. This MMD gorvernment is taking us for granted. This is not 1964 to rule the country using such tricks. These days there is internet, DSTV, mobile phones. People are elite and know when they are being fooled. we will see you in 2011

  20. I have seen this story in the times of zambia and there is no picture of Mr. Jonas Shakafuswa. The picture posted by LT is misleading as it suggests that it is the MP who has been arrested and not his brother as reported in the above article.

  21. Lusaka Times is rtealy full of dog Matuvi realy we know you are MMD punani eaters

why the kunyenga do you put such a headline and misslead people like that

, i have saved this caption page and will forward it to the post for them to expose your silly monkey brained clowns for who you realy are , , if you think for one moment you can some day be like the post on the flip side , you are seriously wishing , wishing real hard
jona should realy sue your Black matako”s
    ala mwalitumpa
and iwe chi nkote CITIZEN suck my ding dongs

  22. Technically speaking there is nothing wrong with the headline as it is indeed true that Shakafuswa has been arrested for money laundering. Dont know why people are getting their knickers in a twist for. Does it mean that if you are related to a govt critic and you commit a crime you should not be visited by the full wrath of the law?

  23. What lazy stupid Journalism… why is Hon Jonas Shakafuswa’s photo in this article it has nothing to do with him. I hope he sues you for deformation of character.

  24. The Story is OK, but I condemn the fixture of Jonas’s picture to the story. LT I dunno am not an expert in law and journalism but this to me is slanderous. Please guide us.

  25. This LT politics 101. All Lt wanted is to mislead the people. LT, give us Mulondwe Muzungu’s pic for his son’s murders.

  26. I AM NOT A FUN OF JONAS SHAKAFUSWA. BUT, WHY PUT HIS PICTURE HERE AND NOT THE CULPRITS. I DON’T SEE HOW HE IS CONNECTED TO THIS CRIMINAL ACT. THIS BLOG WILL ONE BE SUED FOR LIBEL.

  27. SERIOUSLY, ZAMBIANS, ZAMBIA IS ROTTEN. THIS INJUSTICE CAN FALL ON ANY INDIVIDUAL- ME, YOURSEF, OUR PARENTS, UNCLES, AUNTS, GRANS, BROTHERS AND SISTERS. ZAMBIA HAS BECOME LAWLESSNESS BEGINNING FROM THE TOP. IN FACT LAWLESSNESS IS RIFE AT THE TOP. BECAUSE, HOW CAN LT PUBLISH A STORY JUST TO EMBARASS ANOTHER PERSON. THIS IS ALL BCOS OF THE DEEPLY COMPROMISED LEGAL SYSTEM IN ZAMBIA. ZAMBIA IS REALLY COLAPSING. YOU GUYZ WHO VOTE AM APPEALING TO YOU TO CHANGE THIS GOVT. OTHERWISE, IT WILL BE ON YOU 1 DAY.

  28. The first time I saw this article I thought it was Jonas involved, then I read it and discovered that it was his brother so why his photo and not of Charles. This is the work of MMD trying to punish those who do not dance with them. Politics is really dirty in Zed

  29. After reading “Mr President” it looks like there is more to this story than meets the eye thru L.T

There has been some shady deals done by people with power and Zambia may be punished for what they done.

Will Zambians be happy to lose World Heritage listing for Victoria Falls?
What has Rupiah and Chief Mukuni been doing to upset UNESCO.

  30. RBBC, i doesnt make sense with J Shakas photo, even mu nakonde rice mumapezeka yoola, its not Jonas’s fault if his bros ate someones money, he cant apply all his morals to his elders brother/young brothers and his nephews, why cant we wait for the case to go court, we judge him with proof, DIRTY POLITICS MMD!! Y not put a story and the pic of the one who stole from zambians, the new “MMD CAMPAIGN MANAGER” the short one, hes so free en LT has hasnt critised him. were is zambia goin to???? We neeed a saviour!**==
