Government has disclosed that the Zambia State Insurance Corporation (ZCIS) paid a total of K8. 121 billion to the Treasury in form of taxes during the financial year ended 31 December 2009.
Finance and National Planning Deputy Minister Chileshe Kapwepwe said according to the draft financial statement for the year ended 31 December 2009 which was yet to be approved by the board and the Annual General Meeting, the gross premiums written was K240.9 billion.
Ms Kapwepwe told Parliament today that the company also recorded a net profit of K1.1 billion for the year ended 31 December last year.
ZANIS reports that this was in response to a question raised by opposition Patriotic Front (PF) Roan Member of Parliament (MP) Chishimba Kambwili who wanted to know how much ZCIS recorded in the 2009 financial year as turnover.
The Deputy Minister also disclosed that the corporation also incurred claims and benefits to various clients amounting to K 85.27 billion.
Meanwhile, Ms. Kapwepwe has disclosed that over 2, 8 million and 600 British Pounds was channeled to Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) by the United Kingdom to be used towards poverty reduction in Zambia in the year 2008 and 2009.
She was responding to a question by Pambashe PF MP Bernard Chisha who wanted to know how much money was channelled through NGOs by the UK and Netherlands for poverty reduction in the year 2008 and 2009.
He explained that Zambia National Aids Network received over 8 million pounds for the Zambia HIV/AIDS programme, Civil Society for Poverty Reduction got 66 pounds for its programmes, Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) received 8 million pounds to monitor the 2008 Presidential Elections.
Others that benefited from the funding were the Zambia Centre for Inter-Party Dialogue, Press Freedom Committee and the Programme Against Malnutrition among others.
The Deputy Minister further added that according to the UK all the poverty reduction projects were done satisfactory and that all funds issued were properly accounted for in accordance with agreements surrounding their allowances.
And Finance and National Planning Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane urged all NGOs to be accountable for all funds that they received whether from Government or donors.
Dr. Musokotwane said there was need for NGOs to be prudent in the utilisation of the resources they got, if projects of helping the vulnerable groups in society were to successfully be implemented.
He noted that Government had developed a mechanism to summon NGOs after receiving reports on how they utilised money received for their projects.
The Minister was answering a question raised by Bahati MP Besa Chimbaka who wanted to find out if Government does look at books of accounts of NGOs.
