ZCON workers riot

General workers engaged by Lusaka’s ZCON construction today fought running battles with Zambia Police officers during a riot sparked by the company’s alleged reluctance to offer them job contracts.

The workers are engaged to do construction works at the Levy junction, near government printers.

The irate workers complained that they have been working for over a year without signing job contracts.

The workers who sung solidarity songs flashed placards with messages denouncing ZCON management.

They accused their Corporate Affairs Manager Emmanuel Chilekwa of employing his relatives whom he has allegedly given job contracts.

But Mr. Chilekwa dismissed the accusations as false and malicious.

He said ZCON Management is discussing with South African based officials on the best way to improve the workers conditions of service.

Mr. Chilekwa appealed to the general workers to maintain calm while their plight is being addressed.

Police had to fire tear gas canisters to disperse the irate workers who scampered for safety.

  1. #1 & 2, what is your relationship, your names are related. By-the-way, ZCON is a Chinese company, and the HR is Given Banda, RB’s 6th child. He is employed by 4 companies.

  2. +3, ZCON IS A ZAMBIAN OWNED COMPANY SUB-CONTRACTED BY A SOUTH AFRICAN CONSTRUCTION COMPANY (GROUP 5). IT’S OWNED BY ONE, SINYINZA, THE SAME CHAP WHO BUILT MOST PHI HOUSE AT CHAINAMA.

  3. I DON’T KNOW WHY WE ZAMBIANS GIVE OURSELVES BAD NAMES, THE CHAP HAS PROBABLY BEEN GIVEN INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE MAIN CONTRACTOR IS RSA, BUT HE’S NOT BEING FORTH RIGHT TO THE ZAMBIAN WORKERS. PROPER COMMUNICATION CAN AVOID SMALL THING ISSUES BECOMING BIG. IF ZCON EXPLAINS THE HR SYSTEM OF SHORT TERM CONTRACTS TO THE ZAMBIAN WORKERS, AM SURE THINGS CAN BE SORTED OUT WITHOUT INVOLVING THE POLICE

  4. The Zambian workers tear gassed!!!! This is the only method the Police know. Tear Gass them and protestors will scamper. The police do not believe in dialogue in Zambia. They believe in violence. Anyway we at one time told that to be a Police man you are not supposed to know anything. U gotta be a robot or mechanical tool to always obey instructions.

  5. The biggest problem ZCON has is that the company is saturated with his brothers and tribesmen. So only people from these two categories stand a chance of signing contracts in ZCON(formally SINETECH). The same system is used when appointing heads of departments.

  6. #2, you are a shameless propagndist, your emotions are driven by the hate for RB, sinyinza formely of sinetech is the guy behind Zcon.when i floated the chinese involvement.i knew some big mouth liar like you will pop up.Zcon is a zambian company you iddiot
