Heavy rains experienced so far in Chadiza District have caused damage to road infrastructure in the area.
This has prompted the Council to call upon government to come to its aid in repairing the damaged infrastructure with bridges being the hardest hit.
Chadiza District Council Chairperson for Plans and Works Development Committee Esau Nthwala made the appeal during an Ordinary Council meeting held in the Council Chamber yesterday.
This was after a number of councilors requested for Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to go towards repair of damaged bridges and roads in their wards.
Some the bridges that were cited as requiring agent attention are Malaya and Chipwete along the Chadiza—Vubwi Road among others.
Mr. Nthwala said the havoc caused by heavy rains this season was beyond the council and can only be addressed with the help of the central government.
He said using CDF on major works such as bridges has not worked well in the past as projects tend to drag for years before being completed.
Mr. Nthwala said the only solution was for government to fund the repair of damaged bridges and washed away roads.
And Council Chairman Nephat Tembo has appealed to councilors to take keen interest in monitoring projects being carried out in their wards.
Mr. Tembo said some contractors contracted by government to carry out projects were doing shoddy work.
He charged that a number of culverts put up by a named company contracted to carry out road works in Chadiza just before the onset of the rains are already being washed away by rains.
Mr. Tembo said the contractor who was given the contract in Lusaka should be asked to re-do the roads after the rainy season.
