The UK Government, through the Department for International Development (DFID), will increase its aid spending in Zambia by 15% over the next four years.

This is according to British High Commissioner to Zambia . The announcement follows a major review of all British aid around the world and will re-orientate the focus of DFID programmes and projects so that they deliver the greatest impact on poverty reduction.

With its increased resources, the DFID programme in Zambia will shift its focus more to helping rural Zambians in three broad areas over the coming years.

It will continue to help Zambia expand its resource base and work with Government to use this to deliver better services, with a particular emphasis on tackling corruption and waste, and increasing transparency and accountability for its citizens.

At the same time, it will directly address the most off-track MDGs through a combination of cash transfers, maternal mortality interventions and programmes to improve sanitation and hygiene.

Finally it will work to remove the barriers to wealth creation and investment especially in rural areas so that Zambia has a sustainable future beyond aid. Zambia may also benefit from regional funding around its integration and climate change activities.

“Mike Hammond, Head of DFID Zambia, and I are very pleased with this outcome. Zambia has an opportunity for change and it is our belief that with the right support and policy choices there can be real poverty reduction and Zambia can achieve its vision to become a prosperous middle-income country by 2030”, Mr Carter said.

Mr Carter further said he looked “forward to working with all our partners over the coming period to achieve this common goal.”

  1. I strongly doubt it!!!!!!!!
The UK govt has made cuts on its expenditure (which has resulted in the loss of 300,000 jobs in the public sector), it has implimented extremely stringent measures to save its economy from going into double recession, it has cut social benefits to its people, and then someone cooks up a story that it will increase aid to zambia. Anyway, why do we have to survive on handouts people?

  2. #3, point on ma man. This actually contradicts the earlier statement made by the chancellor and pm cameroon regarding the so called austerity measures.

  3. Regardless of the increase, it is still all “DEAD AID” probably just wrapped differently this time around. Viva Dambisa Moyo.

  4. I quote David Cameron’s statement in the House of Commons last year in July 2010, answering a question from Member of Parliament.

“” We will NOT cut down Overseas Aid through (DFID) -Department for International Development. However, those regimes that prove to be putting the interest of the people first will get an increment in AID. On the contrary, governments and leaders that abuse the support we provide will not receive the British Tax payer’s money.””

With Global Markets still recovering, Western Countries are very watchful where they put their Tax Payers money. The UK government would “not increase aid” without good compiled intelligence on the ground from the UK Ambassador to Zambia and other UK Affiliates.

  5. While the Greeks are so embarrased to be recieving foreign aid we in zambia seem to be happy about it.Though we need assistance(technical not financial) on tackling corruption, waste, sanitation and hygeine we need to seriously get off aid.Just list one country that has ever developed due to aid-none.All highly developed countries have done so through their own toil not handouts.Time we get off our lazy backsides, crush our begging bowls & outstretched begging hands and roll our sleaves.

  6. Zambia had a Trade Surplus in 2010 with a balance sheet of K9 trillion. The nation had a Good Yield “without” a deficit month from Jan2010 – Dec2010. That is a good indicator.

As a nation, we must aspire to make a difference and not wait for the government or overseas help to be the nation’s vehicle for Development. It’s always better to attempt something than just sit winging and play blame games.

Especially, When one reads some of the PHD’s (Pull Him/Her Down) Syndromes on Lusaka Times. If Western Countries did not pursue dreams with hard work, they would not be where they are today.

  7. If you have an Education in life, you are “Halfway Blessed” to make a difference and have an impact to transform. It’s about starting from the bottom and work yourself to the top. It not always about finding a top job, but how you can mix your Education, your Passion and God given Talents. This is what helped Western Countries to develop. We hear about the American Dream all the time. Why??

1+1=2, 2+2=4, 4+4=8…and so forth. This is a basic rule in the Capital Investment World.

Zambia has become a nation that has so many people that have ridiculous pride. We laugh at those that are attempting to do something and yet we have nothing to offer.

  8. Having lived in the UK, I have come across a lot of Nigerians that go round showing off all the time, but when you see where they live or eat from you would want to gag or choke. Basically, PRIDE is the biggest virus that kills Nigerians. This as lead to many of them resort to Fraud, just to Keeping Up Appearances. That said they are some good people from Nigeria too. Iam not condenming the whole nation

Therefore, while the government plays its part, we the people must have thrive to the higher evel. Zambia needs the Enterprising Sector to grow.

  9. Life has misfortunes. We should not scorn and ridicule those that are helpless such children that we see begging in the streets of Lusaka.

I for one, have given hundred of millions to Orphanage causes in Zambia so that these children can be fed and be educated to better their lives.

Therefore, we must distinguish those that are just lazy and those that need our support. As matter of fact, I have just persuaded an international institute to go Zambia and donate £100,000 to six different orpahges in the later part of the year.

Life is also about giving back. This is one of the reasons western countries donate or give aid to poor countries. They do it in good faith and to help.

  10. @ INDEPENDENT OBSERVER 5, 7-10 I thankyou for you help to the needy and you educated and wise comments on this threat today.

  11. Above should read thank you for your help towards the needy. The UK knows the importance of Zambia to the common wealth, and thank God for China. As long as the empire grows european and western nations shall continue to up their aid support for African states due to our potential for rapid economic growth and eventual military strength. The more liberated states get on the continent the better our military strengths and our strategic positioning plus natural resources they have to comply.

  12. The next big economic Mecca is Africa, why do you think walmart applied for a trade license in Zambia? Yes their methods are hash even in the US, and ofcourse they are a money making conglomerate with a thirst for milking; remember walmart always settle in advance where money shall fluidly flow like Vegas fountains.

  13. The Key to Zambia success is God, education, Wisdom, A capitalist-socialist government is a plus, Zambians embrassing their culture, independent enterprise. Prayers and thinking outside the grey matter.

  14. 2. Real Issue man,

Increasing in aid does not mean you are perfroming well as a country, but only means the opposite, we are under performing and therefore need increased aid! The worse you perform, the more aid you need – simple! Only morons will look at this as a positive gesture! Michael Sata for total self reliance, Michael Sat for the restoration of Zambian pride (aid free), Michale Sata for President!

  15. Many people have just looked at the report about Zambia but actually the UK has made this decision on a number of countries. Some of them like India, Russia and China have been removed from receiving Aid, why? They are doing much better economically. And I agree with 17 Ichi Nyamu Nyamu (Proud PF Kaponya – zealot). Zambia is going down hence the need to increase aid, nothing to be proud off but we should feel embarrassed. Its like a pupil who is selected for remedial classes, would you celebrate that?? Wake up Zambia pleeeeeeaaaaassssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
