Measures in place to ensure Zambia benefits from mineral resources-Musokotwane

Finance Minister, Situmbeko Musokotwane says stringent measures have been put in place to ensure Zambia gets a fair share of resources from the country’s mineral wealth.

Dr Musokotwane says this is being pursued without scaring away investors in the mining sector.

And Dr Musokotwane says a team of experts appointed to do an audit on the operations of mines, marketing and sales should be given sufficient time to do a thorough job.

He was speaking when he opened a regional meeting on Tax Policy and Development in Livingstone.

The meeting hosted by the Zambia Revenue Authority focuses on cooperation between organisations for economic cooperation and development OECD and Non OECD countries.

Earlier, Zambia Revenue Authority Commissioner General Wisdom Nhekairo said there is need to scale up cooperation in tax issues between OECD and non OECD countries.

He said lessons from the meeting will be used to improve on tax policy and administration in Zambia.

Government with the help from the International Monitory Fund -IMF- and other cooperating partners has instituted a special audit of mines.

  1. #1 what about NAREP? Can you throw some light on Chip Jr. He was on tour in the diaspora as if we can vote for him from here.

  2. ITS NOT GOOD FOR MUSOKOTWANE AND RUPIAH TO BE ADAMANT OVER GENUINE CALLS BY THE PEOPLE AND THINK THEY MORE INTELLIGENT THAN ALL PEOPLE WHEN INFACT NOT.
THE WIND OF CHANGE IS COMING
    WE WANT A LISTENING GOVERNMENT.
    SATA AND PF 2011.

  3. Mr. Minister you need to be sincere with dealings of our country and national resources. We have posed many questions to you time and time again but get no response

  4. Hello pipo. Can someone comment on the story at MTNZambia. Here is the story.MTNZambia has decided to outsource its technical depertment to A chinese company called Huawei. Reindering 44 workerts redundant. One sad part of this story is that all these workers were permanent employees of MTNzambia but they only been offered a 1year contract at huawei.furthermore the workers have been only given a 2months salary*number of years served.worse than this the management most of these workers to get the loans in december last year running for five years.with this development the management is not ready to help the workers in this regard. Therefore the question that every zambian should ponder on is the injustice pain and anguish that foreign inestors bring in the country.infact I’m told the whole…

  5. #1, don’t misunderstand the statement. Dr Musokotwane is talking about implementing and tightening existing tax rules and monitoring mechanisms. The government is continuously studying ways to improve on tax compliance across the board including mines. The Minister is not deviating from the existing tax regime, which is good for the long term growth of the industry.
On the other hand, look at your Mr Sata, by day he is calling for windfall tax, by night he writes letters to RB that he doesn’t want too much taxation on the mines because it may result in increased unemployment in his so called stronghold on the Copperbelt. No one knows where he stands, the usual bag of confusion that he is, ukwalola umwela.

  6. IWE MUSOKOTWANE. WHAT ZAMBBIANS WANT IS VERY EASY TO IDENTIFY. REDUCE VAT, PAYE AND INTRODUCE WINDFALL TAX ON MINES. DONT BE DULL.
