Education main engine for development – Bokova

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has said education remains the main engine of the development of any country.

Visiting UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova has since congratulated President Rupiah Banda for adopting the Education bill.

Speaking in Lusaka today when she met United Nations Country Team (UNCT) Head of Agencies, Ms Bokova said the adoption of the Education bill shows government’s commitment to improving the education standards in the country.

She noted that with the country’s vision of becoming a middle income country by 2030, a good education system will play a critical role in realizing the dream.

She has also urged government and other stakeholders in the education sector to put in place workable implementation policies that will bring about equal access to educational for the children.

Ms. Bokova has since appealed to all political leaders to play an active role in supporting the sector especially for the girl child in order to enhance the country’s economic development.

And United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) representative Owusu Sarfo said Education should be regarded as tools towards wealth creation.

Mr. Sarfo said this is why there is need for other cooperating partners to work closely with government in improving the education system in the country.

  1. I wish rupiah and his violent MMD thugs knew that education was the corner stone of development of any country, then they would have prioritised its development and instituted frugal managerial skills and not appoint a scandal ridden scum by the name of Dollar $iliya to head such a critical ministry.

I am however, comforted that this will change by the end of this year

  2. Sad how real issue do not attract comments from Bloggers on this site. We need to put in govt a party this year which has a clear foresight when it comes to education. For instance education for all from grade one to University or college should not be a compromised issue at all. Most of us have these degree as a result of the UNIP policies. this MMD party has no vision over this issue at all. Now to go to university all one needs is money through what is being called parallel program. It is so sad a system which will bring about a society of the “haves” and the “have not”. I known of one boy with good results ( 12 points) but for money the boys sees no chance other than thinking being a truck driver and he cannot even afford to pay for the training. Please let us vote wisely this…

  3. this is very true and wisable but for sure am suprise that people can’t comment unless ifya ma politics yaba mmd.look at what the educated people thinks BOKOVA brava and kip on helping us to remove these leaders who are still in cave seing only shadows from the realities. education is power.
