Government to ensure no remaining textile industries collapse-Mutati

Share

Commerce Minister Felix Mutati

Government says it will do everything possible to ensure that surviving textile companies don’t collapse. Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister Felix Mutati said since 2003 textiles industries have been facing numerous challenges, not only in Zambia but in the Africa region.

Mr. Mutati cited the allowing of materials from outside Africa as one of the reasons for collapsing of textiles industries. The Commerce Minister was speaking when he toured Kariba Textiles in
Livingstone today.

He said Government has come up with a statutory instrument which will compel the Government to buy from local industries so that jobs are preserved and local textile companies are expanded.

Mr. Mutati urged companies to take advantage of the AGOA forum to market their products which will be held in Lusaka in June.

And Kariba textile Managing Director Ali Desai has appealed to the Government through various departments like health to consider his company when it comes to procuring blankets. He also expressed concern over the heavy duty paid when buying materials.

The minister, who is in Livingstone to visit various industries, he is also expected to visit Fallsway timber later tomorrow.

  1. I was born in Zambia, I don’t fit into any of the stereotypes of black people. My fiancé says I’m not loud, on the contrary I’m quite shy. I also don’t eat fried chicken, eg KFC(I’m vegetarian) and I don’t swear out at people and I’m not loud when I laugh or with a deep voice when hanging out.
All my friends are white and is my fiancé and they say I’m a white girl trapped in a black girls body. I love heavy metal, indie rock, and classic rock and roll, Zambian Music is not for me and is tasteless My favorite band is guns and roses and me and my fiancé listen to them everyday! I surf when I go on holiday with my in-laws also and im really skinny, for people that have seen me on facebook, I weight 49 Kg at 5 foot 5.

  2. I skateboard but I don’t rollerblade. I exclusively date white guys and not black guys because they’re my parents insisted so, by the way my Father is still in Zambia, he said wanted me to marry someone Caucasian because the people I used to befriend in woodlands he felt they were thuggish but that is my past I have done that. He assumed If I married someone local I would let him down, Its really my father ‘s philosophy that has some of you think Iam kinda racist but I am not.
. I’m a little bit ashamed to be black. I wish I was white and born here and i had pale skin! Thanks

  3. Let us pray for our friend Mushota …
“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
Your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven
Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours.
    Now and for ever. Amen.”

  4. Ok first two comments from a wacko just shows how wacko this woman has gone.

Anyway back to serious issues. I think the MMD should stop playing this campaign game and leave it to PF. Mutati is a hardcore capitalists and coments like this coming from him can only be viewed as political rhetoric aimed at winning voters.

In a capitalist system, well managed companies that make profits and produce great products will always survive. Badly managed companies wasting money are always punished and collapsing is one of such punishment meted out by the system.

Is Mutati tell me that if it costs K2 to get fabrics from China, he would ignore that is just sustain an operation costing buyers k5000 and bleeding money. This is politics at its best Mr Mutati, leave it to PF

  5. Let us pray,

Father in heaven, this girl Mushota you created in your own image is blaming you for the pigmentation you proudly inserted in his blood. She wishes she was white unfortunately she is black, in fact dark black like charcoal. You did it deliberately to give her a black skin, because if she were white she could have been a racist. Thank you that you made her black. Do not pour your anger on her as she does not know why you created her.Forgive her of all her sins, known and unknown. in Jesus name Amen.

  7. We are past that age of saving companies even when they can’t compete. This is not a communist or socialist era. We are past that please. And for Govt claiming that they will NOT allow a company to fail is totally WRONG  and IMMORAL  and a total departure from the capitalist system that has stood the test of time.
SADC is a big market, 250 million people. Instead of this company crying for favours  from govt to be their marketing dept, make yo blankets  great and affordable, & people will beat a path to your door. Yes ask govt to reduce duty I support you there. Asking govt to order others to buy from you is a NO NO  and recipe for MONOPOLY. You have to compete. if you can’t, fold up and collapse like everybody else. No sacred cow with the system of capitalism. Everybody is equal

  8. No matter what the government does. If an entity is not viable it cannot survive but just be drain on national resources. Look at NCZ how many times has government pumped in billions. And what almost happened to Zamtel. They have to survive and not rely on government. If imports are of high quality and cheaper than local stuff economic sense will be to buy the imported item. .

  9. Good evening all,

Bloggers, bloggers! Just what on earth is going on here today? I read Mr. Mutati’s the lecture at hand with great interest hoping to read some positive contributions from bloggers and what do I get? Confessions of self-denial followed by prayers of deliverance.

I think there’s an appropriate forum for personal issues of this kind… it is called Facebook.

  10. mushota is nuts.

such protectionist policies will affect my taxes. govt has no capacity or funds to protect local industries, they will need money (my tax money).

They should look at all the real factors that make our products expensive, some can be solved easily such as high electricity and fuel costs, taxes on raw materials, high interest rates, high exchange rates, etc.

  11. on Mushota- she is just teasing people. She is trying to distract people from real issues. Since this site is part of The Zambia Intelligence agency, she might be an operative.

on the real issue at hand, let us appreciate the policy statement. I only hope it is implemented. However, you do not need to stop import from outside. You need to address structural issues that imped the manufacturing sector in the country. Such issues might include taxation, fuel levies, cost of power( the mines had negotiated for a better rate less than what zambian domestic consummers are paying). Let us appreciate the current effort.

  12. correction #9: “Mr. Mutati’s lecture at hand.”

The way I see it, African governments wont have it easy trying to sustain not only the textile but all their local industries. The problem is not even so much about allowing raw materials from outside Africa, it is simply about who has more shares in the world economy. Transnational corporations are on the rise and they have more money than most African countries, so they can get their resources from anywhere in the world and sell everywhere without being limited to regional markets.

The last time I checked, only 7 of Africa’s 54 states had economies large enough to match up with the smallest transnational corp in the world. We need to start thinking bigger than this if we are to survive the unscrupulous bites of the big fishes.

  13. Father in heaven, this girl MUSHOTA you created in your own image is blaming you for the pigmentation you proudly inserted in her blood. She wishes she was white unfortunately she is black, in fact dark black like charcoal. You did it deliberately to give her a black skin, because if she were white she could have been a f**** racist. Thank you that you made her very black. Do not pour your anger on her as she does not know why you created her.Forgive her of all her sins, known and unknown. in Jesus name Amen !

  14. There you go. liberalisation of markets and privitisation was nt done correctly. You have always financed foreign companies at the expense of your own. i am glad yopu starting to work up now to know that we have only one Zambia and no other. No matter how you supporrt foreign companies they will never be Zambian. just like those that work outside zambia they will remain zambian and thats why they are investing well back home

  15. Mushota, dont make God almighty regrate blessing u wth that trip my sister. Can u stop insulting God wth such sentiments plz. Bak to the isue. Mutati, wat we need to knw is how did u manage to buy 50 trucks wth trailers at once b4 u tel us about textiles. We are not foolish tht we wil be misdirected.

    • Trucks and trailers at once. . What’s wrong with that? Those are used motor horses from the USA check on the prices on the internet and government has removed customs duty. Secondly trailers are on lease you can look at the accounts and the M horses were bought on loan assuming its the same trucks we are referring to.

  16. It’s good to read about ‘safeguarding’ surviving textile companies, just not sure I know any textile company after the collapse of Kafue and Mulungushi textiles. How many textile companies do we have for Government to have the statutory instrument for buying from local industries?

  17. I thought Mutati had instituted investigations on the stripping of equipment at Kafue Textiles. Is this what he found out? So, what is the story about KT? Is it India 5 Zambia 0? Another loss? Was that statement the end of the Kafue Textiles story? Investigate and trash the report?

  18. This is hogwash! just campaign gimmick. When MMD came into power they literally destroyed all the local manufacturing industries due to cheap imports. Twenty years down the line they want to hoodwink us?

  19. There is nothing wrong in protecting Zambian industries from collapsing. In South Africa, you cannot import Japanese second hand vehicles for fear of destroying assembly plants. You are better of buying a new vehicle than import salaula from Japan.

NCZ is a viable project, though it lacks capital injection. KTZ is no more, all equipment was transferred else where with the remains turned into scrap metal sold at exobitant prices by investors from India. Shame.

  20. Mutati should be the President of Zambia…the man is academically sound…its the Kanalesa/Bwana syndrome in State House that spoil good men like him….I wish he joins PF before its too late

  21. This is a very blog. I obtained a lot of helpful information from it. Thanks for sharing it. I would take notice of your blogs closely. Good luck to you.
