Pupils’ poor performance in Northern Province saddens Government.

Share

Government is concerned with the poor performance of pupils in Nakonde district in Northern Province with an exception of pupils from Mwenzo Girls High School who have continued to perform exceedingly well .

District commissioner Billy Silwimba has since directed the office of the District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) to ensure that results at all levels in Nakonde district are improved, come 2012.

Mr. Silwimba said the DEBS office should also ensure that the strategic plan being employed by the district is fully implemented in all schools without fail.

Mr. Silwimba was speaking in Nakonde today during a one day strategic meeting for head teachers in Nakonde district held in the council chambers.
The strategic meeting is aimed at finding ways of improving results in the schools.

The District Commissioner said his office stands ready to support the DEBS office in whatever measure it may take as a way of ensuring that results in the district are improved such as the strategic plan.

Mr. Silwimba said there is great need to improve results because education plays a critical role in the social-economic development of the country adding that it is a vehicle through which opportunities for growth, poverty reduction, productivity and human development are realised.

He said that education is critical in enhancing a country’s’ social economic development as it builds people’s abilities in terms of skills to receive and process information for live hood choices saying this is the reason why the Government has embarked on an ambitious programme of constructing and rehabilitating school infrastructure especially at basic level.

Mr. Silwimba said 6 new schools have been built, 56 new classrooms added to already existing schools, 4 schools completely rehabilitated and 2,274 desks distributed to various schools across the border town.

And speaking at the same function DEBS Clifford Sichilima said the good performance of a pupils largely depends on the teacher.

Mr. Sichilima said head teachers should therefore ensure that teachers are always available in class to teach saying quality education can only be attained if teachers are always available in class to impart knowledge to the pupils.

  1. That meeting was a sheer waste of resources. You said only mwenzo is performing well, just go there and learn from them.
I guess the DEBS there knows what is required:enough motivated teachers and teaching materials not just holding a meeting.

  2. Tell us more about Mwenzo Girls High School? I agree with Nsima ya Kapenta. I think some of the educated ladies that have excelled in l life are from Mwenzo e.g. Nawakwi if I am not mistaken. What motivates the Mwenzo teachers? Shakas has hammered the nail on its head. These other schools should learn from Mwenzo. The headteachers of other schools DC they should have Mwenzo head to address them at the same meeting about the secret behind the good performance at Mwenzo.

  3. I hope the govt should understand that it is not the number of newly constructed schools that will improve the pupils’ results. Are the teachers motivated? If a teacher is not motivated, he or she just go in classs and not teach but waiting for the time to be up. When the two elephants are fighting the grass suffers. The pupils are suffering because of RB’s govt which is insensitive to teachers problems. Northern province  borders with Tanzania. What would stop the teaches there to be involved in cross border trade at the expense of pupils in order to survive. The border is so porous like munganganga (sponge). Take my words. What is Dora doing with her painted lips?

  4. Well.
All I know is that Northerners are not good at academics. They just know how how to …….

  5. Toko we second that 100 percent. It’s a known fact so let’s help our northern relatives gain in academics.

  6. I have heard alot of good things and good news about Mwenzo Girls Secondary School. I hope this year the school will have grade eights.

So please, if this will happen I am requesting for people with email address to mwenzo girls to send it to me so that I can forward the application for my doughter as soon as grade seven results will be out so that I can take my girl child who is my last born to this school.

My contacts are 0955324662 / 0967 701844 or 0975685382 or email address [email protected]

May the almight God bless you for responding.

    Thank you,
