The submerged minibus in the Chifubu stream. This accident claimed 13 lives

Government has provided material support to families of the 13 people who died in Ndola on Sunday after the bus they were travelling in plunged into the Chifubu stream.

Copperbelt Minister Mwansa Mbulakulima says Government will do everything possible to lighten the burden of the family members of the deceased victims.

Mr. Mbulakulima has described the Ndola accident as a national disaster and that government is deeply saddened with the death of scores of people.

The Copperbelt Minister was speaking when he visited the Reformed Church in Zambia in Ndola’s Chifubu area where the funeral for the 13 victims is being held.

Mr. Mbulakulima who was in the company of several other senior Government officials said Government will ensure that the cause of the accident is fully investigated.

And Copperbelt Police Chief Martin Malama says are still gathering more information as to what might have caused the accident and will in due course issue a detailed statement to the country.

And Police in Kitwe’s Mindolo Township on the Copperbelt have picked a dead body of an unidentified man.

Police Spokesperson Ndandula Siamana says the body was found with both legs and hands tied with the mouth sealed.

Ms. Siamana says police suspect foul play and investigations have been instituted.

This is contained in statement to ZNBC News in Lusaka by Ms Siamana.

  1. You dont need to investigate. Here is a sulution. Set up training colleges for minibus drivers for a minimum of 6 months on top of a driving school. Anyone driving public transport be trained not only in driving but a lot more. They should be able to understand how a vehicle is made up and they should be psychologically sound before being allowed to drive. Take life seriously. Second, the Roads have to be looked into and third, only fit vehicles should be on the road. Investigating this one wont solve anything because another accident will happen elswhere.

  2. I know where Kafubu river is, but I do not know where Chifubu stream is. Someone tell me where exactly in Ndola is Chifubu stream!

  3. NAPAPA SANA chifubu river is in chifubu area(township).Take a bus to chifubu town via kansenshi and bingo you will see the river before you reach the last station.

  4. Mo Taim, thanks a lot! I had another place in mind! Anyway good Wishes to the affected families.

  5. Govt help in times like these is commendable. I wish this is how swiftly govt should have always responded to various national disasters. Well, this is an election year and every situation will be exploited to the full, this disaster included… That said, I am not surprised by govt’s rapid response. How I wish that every year was an election year, maybe our country would have developed so much

  6. in the case of the body found in the stream in Kitwe to say the police suspect foul play when his hands and legs where bound is reaallly overstating the obvious and souns quite ridiculous!!

  7. But it is your responsibility as govt and not just mere help. Ba mbulakulima this is not zsic but GRZ whose obligations among others include what you are doing just now. I feel for the families that have been hit by this unfortunate tragedy!!!!

  8. Government should be commended for responding rapidly to this unfortunate tragedy. This is as it should be, no politics involved, but an obligation in this time of need. MTSRIEP.

  9. This is not enough; accidents do not just happen, they are caused. First determine the cause of the accident then take corrective action. Immediately suspend the operator’s license and then take further punitive action based on the findings. Crucially government has the duty to protect and preserve its citizens’ life. Out here, the transport minister and anyone else closely related to this accident in public office would already have been shown the door and asked to resign.

  10. if the information gathered on the accident is true is very bad the drive if alive has to be charged. how can he switch off the engine on slop to save fuel now when he wanted to start it failed and steering become hard thats how the minbus went strienght into the river.

  11. #9 & 10 you guys make me laugh….Lishina lya malumbo chabe nothing else…. Just like you call yourselves Destroyer & Gundix respectively. Here, how about this to send you off to bed?…. Neulisha umunsoli no munkoyo mukanwa, ne walambalike ubwamba pali bemba bwasanguka ubulalo na bantu bayabuka…..

  12. Driver should be caged for life. How could he jump out of the bus before it plunged into the river? The incompetent council & the whole GRZ should put safety barriers along the bridge. The bridge should be inspected regularly to make sure that the mucky waters are allowed to flow smoothly.

  13. I was there when it happened when i was watching Charlsea game, just blink of an eye the hell break lose.We ware in a confusion state the guys started to undres and dive in the stream like they re no ladies around and the girles stated crying like babies. MTSLP amen.

  14. Zambia has no institutions to regulate public transport. Many of the accidents that have claimed lives would have been prevented if we had competent institutions to regulate public transport. Its really a pity!

  15. Besides what has been said by all, the state of our roads also contribute to these accidents. The govt can do the nation and its travelling population a lot of good by repairing/mending the roads.

  16. #13 The Constant Optimist: That’s not reality, why should the operator’s licence be suspended before there’s a conclusive report on the cause of the accident? Indeed accidents are caused but whoever caused the accident has not yet been known,it could have been the driver of the bus which plunged into the stream or it could have been a pedestrian or another driver. I have never heard of a U.K Minister or Secretary of State who has resigned because of a road accident caused by someone else, yes, companies like network rail and their contractors etc have been fined millions of Pounds for accidents that caused the death of many people on trains but that was after findings showed that the said companies were to blame,it’s nothing to do with the Minister!

  17. The usual poor reporting in Zambia! Govt has provided material support? What did it provide? Unless you are peddling propaganda why can’t you tell us that govt has provided K90,000 to each each of the victims’ families etc? Details! Details! Thats what reporting is about!

  18. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. It is however quite mind boggling why a 26 seater minibus was carrying 45 passengers from Luanshya and managed to pass the roadblock after Hilcrest roundabout?I dont understand. Can anyone please explain?.

  19. Also the roadblock at Fisenge just before Luanshya road joins dual carriageway. How can this overloading not be noticed by police officers manning these palces?

  20. This is such a slow stretch of raod. Used to walk past there to school and to the Reformed Church in Chifubu. I dont understand how such a terrible accident could have happened. Poor driving.

    Condolences to the bereaved families.
