Tame your wayward priests, Catholic Church urged

Share

THE Christian Coalition has urged the Catholic Church to clamp down on its wayward priests to restore the integrity of the church.

Coalition executive director John Mwendapole said in Lusaka yesterday that the Catholic Church has itself to blame for speculation that it supports opposition Patriotic Front president Michael Sata.

Mr Mwendapole said the speculation arises from the fact that the Catholic Church has not come out in the open to condemn its priests who actively participate in politics.

“Let them clamp down on wayward priests to remove all misconceptions,” Mr Mwendapole said.

He said some named priests have been seen publicly embracing Mr Sata and campaigning with him, which is wrong because the church is supposed to be neutral.

Mr Mwendapole said the Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC) has at no time condemned priests from the church who use the Catholic Church to openly antagonise the MMD government and demean its development projects.

“They only have themselves to blame and they should not turn around and castigate others who defend a constitutionally elected government,” Mr Mwendapole said.

He said the ZEC should not blame anyone who defends government from unnecessary attacks.

Mr Mwendapole said the attacks on the Catholic Church are a clear indication that people are not happy with the unwarranted attacks on government and that the ZEC could remedy the situation by ensuring that priests stick to preaching the gospel and not politicking.

He said the communiqué ZEC issued to all its churches on Thursday and Government wings is a “gimmick to cow Government into submission”.

Mr Mwendapole said the role of the church in Zambia is to preach the gospel and not to incline its membership to supporting certain politicians.

“Some priests are using the church as a platform to manipulate the Catholic Church membership into supporting their preferred political parties, which is wrong,” Mr Mwendapole said.

He challenged the Catholic Church to explain why it allows its priests to support Mr Sata when the church is supposed to be non-partisan.

“The priests are behaving like loose canons and if not properly handled, they can cause havoc in the country,” Mr Mwendapole said.

He said instead of supporting Mr Sata, the Catholic Church should use the influence they have on him to make him a better and more consistent leader.

  1. GOOD ADVICE.
Nowadays it seems everything is blown out of proportion and twisted to suit the speaker!!!
ZEC should not just say Gov’t is attacking the catholic church, thats not true, because a large part of gov’t is actually catholic!!!
It is the rising number of catholic priests that seem partisan and active in politics and worse that are attacking Gov’t, they are the ones that are worrying. If you attack someone, they must defend themselves, ZEC should also take it upon themselves to find order even if it means disciplining some clergy.
Gov’t also should clearly state whom they are worried about!!!
OTHERWISE CHURCH AND STATE CANNOT FIGHT BECAUSE WITHIN CHURCH THE STATE EXISTS AND WITHIN THE STATE THE CHURCH IS THERE, LETS NOT SERVE PERONAL AGENDAS….RELIGION IS BEYOND ONE MAN

  2. ignorance has no defense indeed, ignorance is another form of blindness and deafness. Both John Mwendapole and #1Simeza they suffer from alot of ignorance, they are overly gifted in this vice. Anyhow, room for new knowledge is available once you consult those who know. To be directly, Frank Bwalya, formerly known as Fr. Frank Bwalya lost his position as Radio Chengelo Station Manager and Parish Priest of a Parish in Kitwe because he lucked prudence and balance. ZEC came on the air several times making its stand known, Pope,s Envoy to Zambia also did mention on several accassions the stand of the catholic church. Welcome to new knowledge gentlemen

  3. Old Knowledge being presented by a Philosopher is not so new!!!
Now teach us sir why ZEC is calling out Gov’t??? because the attacks have been on bwalya and a few others, if any mention of church it has mostly been to understand why they have not reprimanded there own! there is duffy (retired), miha, bwalya and then there is caritas zambia.
So give us the philosophical knowledge sir, something new please!
As for me I dont see the ignorance of asking ZEC to put its house in order or to simply leave the matter saying bwalya is not part of us, why go and write such a letter to discredit gov’t?? In gov’t I agree there are catholics or do you disagree?? so the catholics at times, daily mail and in gov’t are therefore also being rebuked by the ZEC???

  4. Not only the above knowledge but also, the Church is the Conscious of the Society. It has a prophetic role to play as Jesus did, Every good Pastor is suppose to take interest in the welfare of his flock, the society. To protect and defend their just human need and rights, that is the reason why the pastor/Priest should speak either for or against a given development based on the just good of the society. But never should a pastor/priest of God be a Political Partisan. Their aim is to lead all people to Holiness, to God were they came from. Whether the members of the flock are UPND, MMD, PF or NAREP, its immaterial for the catholic Church and any other good shepherd

  5. there is something here! ZEC is trying to cover or protect something here!!!
it has been mentioned loosely and this is what worries ZEC, the mention of gays and request to know the stand of ZEC….lately catholic clergy have been associated with such behaviour and thats why we see such a reaction.
had it been any other topic the reaction would be different, lets not serve agendas please!
some clergy have behaved strange but the need to over protect them is not promising!
anyway Zambians will make the decision correctly and hopefully the Lord will guide them, let it not be individuals with wrong motives or those sponsored to make life easier from wayward clergy

  6. the church should be speaking for the people freely and openly.
being part of the church should not turn into a platform to launch political careers or to earn a better living!
why is it that some clergy are aligning themselves with questionable politicians and are later even being rebuked by even more questionable politicians??
zambia is a very free country and we cant say that people are so censored they cant speak, why should clergy come in and display some sort of desperation that does not exist?? some are behaving as though western province has no voice, no litunga, no govt presence, no minister, no voters and no MP’s.
of all people clergy should have open eyes and be able to see the good as well as the bad…not looking selectively to serve one agenda or the other

  7. Well done Sceintist, The letter ZEC wrote is influenced by Dora Siliya’s Remarks when she toward Luapula Province when she used the falacy of universarlity when she was suppose to be particular. If Mr. Scientist, you are in Zambia you should know what transpired in Dora Siliya Desparation to win support from PF Strong hood, Dora is learned woman but not Educated, In luapula she became too womanish unfortunately.

  8. unfortunately when discussing serious matters and in this case those pertaining to the church I would not want to bring in Dora Siliya. She has of late been a big let down!
the information we have gotten on her and her motives are not encouraging, I wish I believed she really had the heart to serve zambians, she may be good at her job I am not going to debate that but her passion is ill placed.
the woman is in it for power, for wealth and for recognition!
How do you display such photos and talk of your body in such a manner during a meeting? lots of stories have circulated about her in bed with this and that politician, but true or not, the latest behaviour is just off!!

  9. there is no church minus people.
In Zambia the majority are christians and thats what makes up the church…not just the clergy!
so unfortunately when we read newspapers we only see the word church without proper explanation and we are just left to insinuate and conclude, it is as though we already know how certain church groupings are aligned and that is sad.
the truth is that the catholic church leadership has seemingly been against gov’t and everyone is seeing that!! then there are other church branches and ministry leaderships that have obviously thrown support behind the gov’t and even that is public knowledge…the issue of nuetral is non existant and we should not pretend today ba ZEC

  10. Sorry I have to agree with the article and #1Simenza a right and Mr Polical Philosopher I think you are failing to tell the difference between Rhetoric and fact. Yes the catholics did what you said in your post #2, but they have not implemented what they resolved. The people with agendas are out to use the catholic priests , there is no day that passes without the POST newspaper using some catholic father here and there, like MMD is using chiefs. The catholic is a structured institution and should speak with one voice. If their priest open their mouths, let blessing and comfort pour from their mouths and not strife as is the case now. These are supposed to be men of GOD. There are still more father Bwalyas in the catholics and let them be smoked out too.

  11. the real reason upsetting ZEC is that they are known to be against RB and are seemingly supporting sata (i say seemingly to show that its a conclusion just like ZEC concluded that they are being attacked and its sponsored by gov’t)!!
now unfortunately sata is being linked to gays which does not reflect well on the church with a recent bad record!! but when you allow attacks you must expect retaliation, this is a chance for ZEC to preach reconciliation and counsel zambians on right vs wrong….they should not now begin to try and bring about more divisions!!!! how many of the 3million catholics will vote and how many against gov’t??? ask yourself before you try and think you can easily change the result of an election to suit others

  12. most catholic priests are bemba… pf is bemba party,so is sata who doesnt use any other lingua when campaigning.that is why we need to support him…

    • No wonder they call you Kaponya! You are gross underestimate the PF! This is the fastest growing Party in Zambia- all because of one man! But what is happening now is that the PF has grown bigger than Sata- what he (Sata) started was a movement! Everyone even RB wants a piece of it! If He (RB) had a way he would have joined PF already! The Catholic Church has and will always speak when there is injustice (even next year) they will speak against Sata’s government if there is injustice! I can only hope that we will be on the same side with the Political Philosopher and the Scientist! I will always speak against injustice- READ MY LIPS!

  13. Tame father Bwalya and Duff, they are very big headed. When they hear that Zambia is a Christian nation, they think that they can just bubble anyhow. Duff has a colonial mentality, he thinks he can just be telling Zambians what they should do. Go back to Europe.

  14. Lets accept the MMD theory that the catholic church is supporting the church as the chiefs are openly and unequivocally supporting RB.Does this mean that the chiefs are open to vitriolic attacks from Sata supporters as the church is been attacked by RB loyalists?Just curious.

  15. Whats morally wrong with the clergy engaging in politics, or whats wrong with the catholic throwing their weight behind a certain political party,is there a written rule that prohibits the clergy from becoming politicians? Nevers Mumba is a preacher yet he is a politician, Shikapwasha is a reverand, yet he is a politician,he did not denounce his faith or title of reverand when he joined politics.
Mr Mwendapole says the role of the church in Zambia is to preach the gospel and not to incline its membership to supporting certain politicians” is this a rule,a policy or part of the constitution. What is morally wrong with the clergy to engage politics?

  16. The rhetorics and practice can never be separated or rather theory/beliefs/policies/doctrines are rhetorics, they are guidelines to the practice. If a rhetoric is not viable, incoceivable, cant be put into practice then the thinking mass will rid it of the set. Therefore, Mr. Freedom rhetorics are inseparable from practice, why in this case, Catholics are educated, they are the thinking mass, they will not keep non working theories. Moreover, in the country Zambia, the same priest, catholics have the best education facilities, structures and man power, Mr. Scientist knows this beyond daubt. you all know also that since time in memorial the Catholic Church has always complement good Govenment programmes, look at school, Hospitals and social welfares. Please open your eyes and see………..

  17. Kaunda, in 1990 and time before, he threatened to to send all the priest away from Zambia because they encouraged him to allow multiparty system, where they Partisan??? During Chiluba and the third term, the same was the reaction, Politicians kept on naming the church as pro oppostion because it stood to defend the costitution of the country which was nearly raped by Mr. Sata. During the late LEV (mhsrip) and now is Rupia, is that a reason enough to stop defending and being the conscious of the society??? Any body who has a problem with that has just an issue with his/her person human development. Maturity is missing. How can the Church Support Sata as immoral as he is, recycled UNIP and MMD which is now PF. anyway you can wash a pig but it will still get back to the mud…..

  18. Smoothcriminal, the Civil Servants and the clergy are public figures, serving general public interest. They attend to a variety of people from all works of life with all their different polical views. Now just think a bit serious, if you Mr. smoothcriminal given a chance to head a church and you are PF, you go on the pulpit and preach PF, do you think those who are anti PF will remain in your church?? Centainly not yet principle and policy of the church is to lead people to God and not political part or not even to the individual preacher. God is the center of the church for us Christians. Nevers, Frank bwalya are all astry people that need redeption

  19. No matter your vulgar language, CHANGE is coming with or without the name Catholic Church. People simply want CHANGE, Sata or no Sata. However, Sata is the man of the moment period. “2011 Vote PF, Vote Sataaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

  20. Who are the Christian Coalition?
I have never heard of them in Zambia. Would like to know when they were constituted and what they do. Are they the same as Nevers Mumba’s NCC, only that the name has now changed?

  21. Mr. John Mwendapole, kindly answer these simple questions: Is wrong for a Christian to support a presidential candidate of his choice? Is wrong for a priest to show support for a person he thinks can do better as president? Don’t you think stopping priest from speaking out on national issues is infringing on their human rights? What do you say about Pastors like Moses Lungu who have openly come out in support of RB? Should the evangelical church consider him as wayward and tame him?

  22. Political Philosopher..u speak like a serious PF cadre and your analysis is very shallow. Every institution has got roles to play. The church is supposed to preach the word of God, to speak for the voiceless, to speak against injustices, not to condemn/Judge others(because the Bible says “do not judge”. The church is not supposed to take sides. Is there a relationship between advocating for change of government and speaking for the voiceless? What makes those priest think that Sata is an angel sent from above to come and redeem Zambia?

  23. Mr. John Mwendapole, kindly answer these simple questions: Is it wrong for a Christian to support a presidential candidate of his choice? Is it wrong for a priest to show support for a person he thinks can do better as president? Don’t you think stopping priests from speaking out on national issues is infringing on their human rights? What do you say about Pastors like Moses Lungu who have openly come out in support of RB? Should the evangelical church consider him as wayward and tame him?

  24. Scripture and history clearly support the church’s place in Political concerns. Daniel became a leader in Babylon, Amos and other prophets spoke about political and social matters in Israel, Judah and the surrounding nations. Both John the Baptist and Jesus refer to the political concerns of their day. In both the Old and New Testament God’s representatives spoke out against abuse of political power and sought just use of power. This surely, is what being “salt and light” means. Hence participation in politics does not detract from spirituality. in fact a spirituality that is unrelated to politics is questionable.

  25. this is stupidity of the highest order by this i.d.i.o.t mwendabole. how many churches suport mmd? countless, chihana, bicoga bishop. why ar u so selfish…..catholic go on and preach to yo pipo to vote out the mmd on 5th june…….this mmd shud feel yo weight batumpa ba stupid

  26. hahahaha, sory Mr President 2026, read my comment #18, and then inform the public how I can be PF cadre of all the wrong things in the world just to be PF cadre??? Did you complete grade 12 or you are just using feminine analysis? Or rather just the issue of human development. Ask somebody to help you reread my comments, then comment after.

  27. A key role the church plays in politics is through its prophetic ministry. “Prophetic” here means speaking into policy, structure, or issues in the name of God and Christ, or on behalf of humanity in general or of a community in particular. Respected Anglican bishop Desmond Tutu is a classic example of this.He fought running battles with the government, just to get a better living for the communities and the vulnerable people in particular.Shikapwasha is a reverand, why cant you point a finger at him and advise him to either stop politics and concetrate on his calling or just be a politician?

  28. Mr Political Philosopher..don’t fool yourself. You pretend not to be a PF cadre but your line of thinking is that of a hard core PF cadre i.e shallow + arrogant for nothing. Anyway, If you are not one yet please join them, you belong there. Lets not raise the issue of education here because if tell you my level you would s.h.i.t in your pants. You seem to be a male chauvinist, a sign of narrow mindedness. You should realise that there are alot of brilliant women out there who can analyse issues far much better than you.

  29. Prophetic work cannot and will never be spearheaded or even carried out by priests and fathers (in invented coma) who are child molesters and homosexuals like Bwalya and Paul Duffy. These imposters will never represent God’s work here or in the after life. Luckily the true Christians some of whom are Catholics know that as these supposed priests and fathers and bishops’ works speak volumes of their filth work.

  30. Presindent 2026, Enjoy your weekend, you have at last exposed enough even your age has been spelt out. Any who worries about kids around???

  31. #29.you attack the “shallowness and arrogance”of #26 with some of your own?beat him with logic and sensibleness.Or maybe shallowness and arrogance is not a PF monopoly!

  32. Rupiah is feeling the heat by the Catholic Church. Instead of apologising,he is becoming even more antagonistic by using disgruntled Mwendapole who is annoying the church even more.
The letter by the ZEC Bishops will be read on 5th June 2011 in all Catholic Church Congregations throughout Zambia. This will be a very big Sunday.Dora can’t be insulting Our Catholic Priests,NO NO NO,we shall not allow it.
Who is Mwendapole to challenge the Catholic Church who are speaking for the poor?

  33. MMD IS GOING ….BELIEVE ME….DONT PLAY WITH THE CATHOLIC. MWENDAPOLE IS JST SOME SEBANA WIKUTE GUY.

  34. PRESIDENT 2026…i cant really figure it out why u have pin pointed the POLITICAL PHILOSOPHER as a PF cadre cause his comments r to neutral and straight to understand,,dont tell me u cant analyze simple words. From your language on comment 26 i think u dont deserve to debate with intelligent individuals like POLITICAL PHILOSOPHER at all and u r the real kaponya homos we talk about. PPhilosopher we need your contributions always and never mind such ignorant dull individuals…

  35. This euphoria in Zambia reminds me of one episode in history. The Germans and Hitler and believe me you , the Catholic Church supported Hitler. The rest as we know is history.

  36. Catholic church is not a pseudo church, it is the church of Christ…founded by the apostles of Christ…We Catholic we speak the truth and we start for what we believe in. When things are not going on well we speak out…We are the voice of the voiceless. Priests speak for the people they work with. They know what they talk about. They live with the people even in the difficult areas where government officials never reach…Do not insult the Church…

  37. the catholic leadership has been forced to apologise for the misdeeds of their own priests many years after the event, many years after living in denial for what they knew to be true. if they are true christians and care for society, isn’t it neater to control their priests now than wait until they damage our society and then “apologise” with crocodile tears? this catholic thing is going too far, no wonder so many breakaway churches are mushrooming, reflects a growing lack of confidence in these characters calling themselves clergy.

  38. if i were zec i would withdraw the so called pastoral letter, they will never recover from the embarrassment that the letter will bring to the church. if they really have to issue the pastoral letter, they can just mention the bit which condemns homosexualism and lesbianism as a sin, the rest is sheer embarrassment, the way bishop telephone embarrassed himself and allowed himself to be abused by the post like a common party cadre.

  39. @23, is it right for a priest to support a person whom all available evidence (read post archives again or if you are too lazy to read let cc3 do it for you) proves that he can never make a better president? could be okay if the priest did not use the body of christ to cheat God’s people. catholic priests are appointed by the church hierarchy to represent the leadership. some things are obvious bane, just look at that former catholic priest bwalya now turned party cadre. if the catholic church tolerates such characters to represent them, then they are inviting criticism and should not complain.

  40. For a long time now most zedians have been rather STUPID to fall to the lie that the Church and Politics do not mix. Stupid people have cheated you that politics is dirty and so the church must stay away from any politicking, what a bunch of panzies as King Julian puts it. You mean to tell me that the people who go to church and the ones who vote a two different sets? Mwembutuma mwe! The church is and has been at the center of any political ideology fathomed by mankind and today just because a few pastors are lining to sing the MMD tune you say such are the ones who are supporting a constitutionally elected goverment. Then why call it a Christian nation if you dont want Christians at all levels to participate in governing the country? what of shikwapwasha, nalumango and even master dribbl

  41. dribbler ftj, why not condemn such people? Mwendapole tell mean the difference between pastor Frank Bwalya and Simon chihana or David Masupa? The church must be sleeping because if the same church opposed the CONSTITUTIONALLY ELECTED govt of KK why should it be a crime for it to criticize this current govt?
Mwendapole you must resign or change the name of your pocket organisation to something unchristian or else you perish since you lack knowledge

  42. am not a roman catholic church goer but i believe that the church can comment on political affairs with fear or prejudice. the church if anything must be the pioneer of all political parties unless they are based on the non existence of God. Simply put POLITICS IS NOTHING BUT MANAGEMENT OF PEOPLES AFFAIRS be it at ward level, Church level or national govt level. Even when a preacher is preaching the word of God, he/she is basically nailing the nail on the head where wrong doing is concerned and gives admonition likewise. If the church is living in sin, the pastor must say REPENT or you perish and if the republican president is a thief, the pastor must tell the devil in his eyes that iwe mambala leka ukwiba

  43. Unless you tell me David the one who is after Gods own heart led a sinless life. Unless you tell me you who want to call yourselves Christians that Samson was so faithful to his calling as a Nazarite. Unless you tell me that people like Saul with such a dirty past cannot convert to become PAUL, then i will believe that Sata or Rupiah or Hakainde or indeed any one who aspires to become republican president cannot be allowed based on their past dirty skeletons. Change comes to a prepared mind. With God, He can raised a JUDGE as He did in the times Israel sinned against Him and the character of the judge can be anything from righteous to hard core mafia. He raises a leader for himself and for a purpose otherwise He would have raised a Pharaoh with a soft heart but SCRIPTURE does not say that

  44. rather, the Lord God Almighty says in the word of God that “for this purpose i raised the Pharoah…” He made the Pharoah hard hearted so that Israel will see HIS(God) glory. So even in Zambia, if God has seen that peoples lives are being trodden on by wolves in sheep skin, He can raise a JUDGE who is like Samson, very strong just in order to uproot the sinful temple of Zambian dagons. He can raise a judge who can be a dictator to move the country from laziness to hard work. God can raise up any MAN He feels like, this is His preserve and He does this by using human elements with tools such as ELECTIONS. By the way, elections are as old as man has been around planet earth. they are not a new phenomenon. UBUTUTU MULEKE pa ZED

  45. #46, If you are a Bible reading Christian and not a mouth professed one, tell me about Saul the persecutor of the Christians. Did he convert or his past kept resurfacing so that he was not fit to be called an apostle? Do you know that the great King David once committed adultery which resulted into a pregancy and he ended up conjuring an idea for murder of the husband of Abigail? Unless you dont read the word of God, then you will just be yapping about Christianity without knowing where it all comes from. You cannot separate modern day Christianity from David and Judah. Again do you know that this lineage from Judah, David,Joseph (Jesus father) and up to Jesus, has been wrapped in some adultery, fonication murder affairs before? If such misdeeds were a prerequisite for God to deliver His p

  46. His people, would He have selected such a lineage? The same applies to today. we must be a people that have good reasoning and we must not be cheated that once a person becomes president, they can not be removed from power, dont we see from west africa that such people who become dictators dont last forever? we must not be afraid to change government because we have the firing and hiring capability and so no need to worry weather Sata will be a dictator or not or HH will be a tribalist or not. Try them and if they become as predicted, chuck them out by any means starting with elections and if they rig to suit them, use force because we have seen that force also is good a weapon to deter dictators. See Gabgo, he is no longer president yet few months ago he was commander of the ivorian arme

  47. armed forces. the same applies to Zambia as its not an island. look at Egypt, who ever thought iron fist Mubarak will be deposed? so FEAR NOT, fellow Zedians. We need to move on at a fast rate and not move only when its the fourth or fifth year into elections. You mean Zambia will be developed in five year spans? why cant we see roads being repaired or constructed six months down the elections and why only few months before elections must we see gigantic pronouncements that chakuti chakuti project is being commissioned. should the whole kaduli of a president go to CB to commission road rehabilitation? Imwe ba mumbwa mwambwa, wake up.

  48. Anti Corruption..I respect your opinion. If you read my post carefully you would realise that i did not say that he is a PF cadre, I said he speaks Like a PF cadre. PF cadres have certain characteristics in common – they are all arrogant and narrow minded. Your Political Anal. has the features i have mentioned. Instead of just putting across his ideas in a proper manner he started calling other people “ignorant”, he brags that he is the source of new knowledge. In his post #7, he demeans the womenfolk (calling Dora womanish). Is this right? Is it necessary? We should realise that knowledge is perspective. On this blog, we merely put across our opinions and no one opinion is superior to those of others. So advise your friend to learn how to express himself in public to avoid criticism.

  49. hahahaha president 2026, you are really a kid of your time. We will always disqualify unthinkable opinions from kids like you because they are dangerous and misleading. Moreover, PF and MMD are one and the same. You really shows that you are deeply and gifted in ignorancy closer to Mwendapole. Any how, once a pig, you will remain a pig even when an option is given for better. You can remove someone from the village but you can not remove the village out of his thick head. shame

  50. Where has this Mwendapo come from, just enjoy tha brpwn envelope from MMD-RB. MMD Kuyabebeleeeeeeeeeee, come September!

  51. The question we must ask ourselves is whether a Zambian catholic priest serving elsewhere could freely comment on political issues as these foreign priests freely do it here. We have allowed these foreigners so much freedom such that now they are discrediting us. The likes of Duffy, Miha, and others must watch their tongues. This is our country and if they are not happy they can go to hell. I dont think where they come from they would allow a Zambian priest to comment on the political situation so openly, let alone, negatively.
