Patriotic Front (PF) president Michael Sata said the late Dr Chiluba could have been taken for specialist treatment in South Africa when he complained of not feeling well.
Mr Sata said yesterday when he contributed to the Radio Phoenix Let the People Talk programme that Dr Chiluba had access to better medical facilities than many other Zambians.
“How did Government allow Dr Chiluba, who indicated that he was unwell, to be in Zambia for about five hours without being taken to a medical institution?” he asked.
However, the MMD reacted by condemning Patriotic Mr Sata for trying to gain political mileage from the death of former president Frederick Chiluba.
MMD spokesperson Dora Siliya told journalists in Lusaka yesterday that it is embarrassing for Mr Sata to exhibit such behaviour when Zambians are mourning Dr Chiluba.
Ms Siliya was reacting to Mr Sata’s allegations that Government neglected Dr Chiluba by not taking him to a medical institution when he complained that he was unwell on Saturday.
“It is a disgrace for Mr Sata to point fingers over the demise of Dr Chiluba and championing his political ambitions, this is shameful and unacceptable to Zambians who are mourning a person who ruled them in peace for 10 years,” she said.
Ms Siliya said it is important for Dr Chiluba’s funeral to be respected because he was a man who loved peace.
“Let us mourn our former President in dignity and not to engage in careless talk like Mr Sata,” she said.
Ms Siliya said Mr Sata should heed the call by New Generation Party president Humphrey Siulapwa for a ‘ceasefire’ as the nation mourns Dr Chiluba.
She said Dr Chiluba contributed immensely to the country’s history and the growth of the economy.
“The history of Zambia is incomplete without mentioning the name of Dr Chiluba,” Ms Siliya said.

I agree with SATA Chiluba started feeling unwell from 18hrs and passed away at 00:05hrs.There was enough time to get him to UTH and even Joberg (Morning side clinic). The problem in Zambia is that most of the people do not want to hear the truth and quickly accuse oposition leaders of politicising everything when in fact it is MMD in Dora and Dickson Jere who are now politicising the statement. Can Dora and all the MMD vuvuzelas tell us why the family members want a postmortem? We have already been told that he was feeling better after being attended to and he even had asked the doctor to go because he was well. Even Mwamba said that he was talking nicely sitted at the edge of his bed when he suddenly had the attack. Iam no doctor but I think the doctor knew what he was doing. Personally I never liked Chiluba, especially after his first term. I have really never liked RB, but I can stand him. For one Michel Chilufya Sata, I am just repulsed, not because of how he looks like, but because of his charecter and what comes off his mouth, and most of all, what he stands for.

So if Chiluba’s family want a postmortem, then it means the Government is to blame. A postmortem will establish the exact cause of death, heart failure or what ever. You can condemn Sata all you like, but one thing that is surely remains puzzling is the stabilising of FTJ that the physician had to do which took 5hrs. Worse still the cause of death is not known, atleast not publicily leading people to speculate that it was a heart attack. But then,heart attacks dont just happen suddenly. There is a built up to that with clear signs that the attending physician surely couldhave picked up. And it is on this that people will speculate on whether the best place to treat these conditions was surely from FTJ bedroom!!

I had in another thread felt that Sata would not be able to opportunistically find something from this funeral. But was I wrong. The Cobra has managed to outwit my thoughts. They with Mmembe have been strategising on the way forward arising from the ka “unforeseen and unfortunate demise” of lazo Chiluba. The first salvo was innocently fired in the Sunday editorial where care was implied to avoid hammering the family with Chiluba’s past misdeeds. Later, it must have been agreed to paint the MMD as ruffians hence no need to attend the funeral. Now the strategy is to find some mud that will stick to RB. Those of us who work in hospitals and are clinicians that a few hours (2-3hrs) in an emergence situation can mean a lot in terms of saving lives. Why do you think there are amublances in the first place? Even if it was not evacuation to S.A, at least he shoiuld have beeen taken to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) somewhere locally. By the way do you know that there is a presidential lodge at UTH (guarded 24hrs a day even now) where KK used to be admitted for his medicals? Since Chiluba’s time no President has used used it. This is what happens when you cannot trust your institutions, you die at home, a very big shame for a (former) head of state…..

From what we have been told so far the cause of death is not clear and this could lead to unwarranted rumours. The word “Proactive” is there for a reason. A doctor with knowlege of a patient as being of high risk MUST be proactive and subject the patient to a detailed diagnosis beyond that of a stethoscope. This in my opinion is what should have happened. For now all we can do is learn from this outcome. If the symptoms are inconclusive, subject the patient to detailed diagnosis ASAP before the symptoms disappear.
you truly speak like a lay person without a medical background. you assume Chiluba’s condition was reversible, and in his best interest to keep him alive at all cost. the implication here is not that all due diligence need not have been appropriate, however, give his clinician/s the benefit of a doubt that they did the best they could, unless you can prove there was utter negligence.

Unless the late FTJ and his family chose for him to die at home, there is no reasonable reason why a former head of state should die in his house, unless of course, there are some intensive care facilities in the house for the condition he suffered with.

In the Criminal Justice System, even criminals are entitled access to medical attention. Even if they are on death roll. Chiluba was not on death roll, but may have been a thief but still entitled to medical attention. What i know about cardiac arrest ( as a medical professional) is that, the first hour is critical and after that if a patient does not receive expert medical attention then recovery is NIL and death is not unusual. That is one view. Chiluba had chronic ailments coupled with a dodgy marital ambiguities. Come on folks, there a million reasons why the fella was not keen to be admitted to a medical institution locally (UTH). We will never know!.

When FJT’s personal physician was first called in, he attended to the patient for an abdominal ailment, nothing pointing to a heart problem. Based on his assessment and the assurances of his patient, the doctor decided that his patient would be okay and left. When he was called back later, he re-assessed the situation and called for reinforcements, presumably more senior doctors. FJT died suddenly before the medical reinforcements arrived on site. Now the personal doctor is a doctor not God to know that FJT would die suddenly. You satans, please leave our beloved RB out of this. You know very well that between RB and chi Satan, it was only chi Satan who wanted FJT dead and his words are recorded in the Post.

SATA himself feels he will not control himself by doing what he does best (opportunism)under such circumstances. He was slapped by maureen during the late LPM’s funeral. The man is unrepentant. If he wins the top job our country will be the biggest laughing stock in the world. This kind of comic uterances & behaviour will not lead us any where. You do not need to be a doctor to know that any concerns of indigestion in people with heart problem is a typical sign of a major problem and hospitalisation should be a priority…I am just a nurse but I know this.
