ZAMBIA Republican Party president Benjamin Mwila has described Chongwe member of Parliament Sylvia Masebo as a truant and selfish politician who should not be voted for.
And Southern Africa Centre for Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) has said the last-minute defections by Ms Masebo and former deputy Minister of Works and Supply Lameck Mangani are acts of opportunism and desperation.
Mr Mwila said while Ms Masebo has the right to change political parties at will, she is being truant by slandering President Banda and the MMD.
Mr Mwila, who is Nchelenge member of Parliament, says his former secretary general has continued swinging from one political party to other for personal gain.
He said time has come for the people of Chongwe to seriously examine the political character before following her to her new party the Patriotic Front.
Mr Mwila said in an interview on Thursday that Ms Masebo is one parliamentarian who has been elected on a different political party every five years.
Mr Mwila advised that the electorate should be asking Ms Masebo why they should continue voting for her every five years on a different political party.
He explained that while Ms Masebo has the democratic right to belong to any political party, she has in her political life been confusing the electorate by changing parties every five years.
Mr Mwila stated that the electorate should be sensitised to stop believing in persons and following them blindly politicians whose characteristics are not predictable.
“Why should the people of Chongwe continue voting for her? She has been changing political parties every five years and that is being truant politically. Although she has the right to change political parties as she wants, it is being truant to subject the electorate to a different political party every five years. She is in fact taking the electorate for granted. For now, it is up to the people of Chingwe to examine her behaviour because now it looks like it is tribal on her part,” Mr Mwila said.

He said Ms Masebo has been misleading the people of Chingwe by changing political parties and that her interest is not about serving the communities but for her own benefits from the parties she goes to.
He stated that Ms Masebo lacked principles by joining the political party that she maligned and slandered ceaselessly when she was in Government.
Mr Mwila said the people defecting from the MMD now have openly exhibited naked political opportunism and the electorate should be wondering why they have chosen to leave the ruling party now and not much earlier.
Ms Masebo won the Chongwe seat in the 2001 general elections on the ZRP ticket but defected to the MMD and retained the seat on the ruling party ticket.
She has since defected from the MMD and is now going to contest the same seat on the PF ticket.
And SACCORD executive director Lee Habasonda says Ms Masebo and Mangani’s resignations from the MMD are not as a result of ideological differences with the ruling party.
Mr Habasonda said it has taken the duo three years to realise that its beliefs are different from what is happening in the MMD.
He said those resigning now should explain to the people why they had to wait until days before elections to defect from the ruling party.
Mr Habasonda said Ms Masebo has been abusing the electorate in Chongwe by jumping from one political party to another.
“It does not make sense to wait until days before elections to defect from one political party to another. Ms Masebo and Mr Mangani are serving their own interests rather than those of the people they purport to represent. It is opportunism rather than service and ideological differences. It would appear that these people do not understand why they belong to political parties because one cannot be hopping from one political party to another every five years,” Mr Habasonda said.
Mr Habasonda advised the PF to be cautious and not celebrate the defections of Ms Masebo and Mr Mangani because the two cannot be trusted.
He said defections have in the past cost the country a lot of money that could have been channelled to other development programmes.
Meanwhile, MUNIDE NYIRENDA reports that MMD Lusaka Province chairman William Banda has advised Chongwe member of Parliament Sylvia Masebo to stop misleading the nation that President Banda hurts her.
Speaking during public rally in Chinkulu ward in Chongwe yesterday, Mr Banda said the people of Chongwe have resolved to reject Ms Masebo through the ballot.
Mr Banda said Ms Masebo’s stance to support the Patriotic Front (PF) is the end of her political career.
He said Ms Masebo will regret joining the Michael Sata’s PF.
“This is the end of her political career, whoever think she is strong, we will show them in the coming elections,” Mr Banda.
He urged Ms Masebo to stop using the name of Chieftainess Nkomesha Mukamambo ll of the Soli people to gain political mileage.
“Masebo claims Chongwe is a no go area, does she know us properly? This game is a game for us who know it,” Mr Banda said.

Ben Mwila is an honourable respctable politician known for being upright. He formed his own Party not because he disliked FTJ but as a measure to keep a distance from the then MMD Secretary Genera Michael Sata selfish drive to expel credible politicians from MMD. Ben Mwila’s assessment of Masebo is based on his experience when she was a member of Mwila’s party. Masebo has been crowned as one of the most brutal prostitutes in Zambian politics.

Lee Habasonda has artculated clearly about the last minute defections.Those that leave MMD (at higher level), have realised that they may not be adopted, hence as an act of desperation look for any party that may adopt them . Ben Katanga Mwila should be the last person to accuse anybody of truancy. The Gabon report is to date still at large because of Mwila, he put our boys on an air coffin and they never came back home alive. I agree with BY. The people of Chongwe should instead vote for her uncle ambassador Adrian Bauleni. The man can bring development to Chongwe consituency on UPND ticket.
