PRESIDENT Banda has directed Ndola City Council (NCC) to adhere to the law when demolishing houses.

Mr Banda said Government will not support the demolition of houses by the council without following the law.

The residents intercepted the President as he was leaving Masaiti where he officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony of the construction of the Dangote cement plant.

“Go and tell the council that my government supports the policy of empowering Zambians through home ownership and not demolition,” Mr Banda said.

The President was speaking in Ndola yesterday when residents of Bwana Mkubwa complained to him about the demolition of houses by Ndola City Council.

Mr Banda assured the residents that Government will deal with the matter urgently to ensure that houses are not demolished.

The President said he had no clue why the residents were flagging him down until they informed him of the problems they are facing with the council.

“I did not know that you have a lot of problems with the council. I am glad that you have informed me and I can assure you that I will give you back the plots,” Mr Banda said.

The residents told the President that the council did not notify them about the demolition exercise.

“We don’t have anywhere to go. We paid for the plots at the council and we are surprised that the local authority now wants to demolish our houses,” one of the residents, Sylvia Mpundu, said.

The residents informed the President that two houses were demolished on Wednesday without notification.

The President also directed the provincial administration to intervene and ensure that houses are not demolished.

  1. better to leave the council alone, political interferance is not health.but looking at sept 20,it is ‘the gods must be crazy’

  2. The POINT IS AS HE HAS STATED – HE HAD NO CLUE, & SO REMAINS CLUELESS, odd thing is that HE FINDS IT RIGHT TO OVER RIDE THE COUNCIL WHATEVER REASON, WITHOUT SPEAKING WITH THE COUNCIL – AN OBVIOUS SIGN OF VOTE BUYING, ECZ SHOULD BE ADMONISHING THE PRESIDENT ON THIS ONE!!!!

  3. are these houses illegal buildings or they were built by MMD and now the PF want to demolish? ba banda naimwe UBUTUTU muleke.

  4. Foolish, the president has no idea of what is going with his people.sounds to me like he is out of touch with his base.Go take a break at the farm please.

  5. If the houses are built illegally the council has the right to demolish. This f 00 l keeps interupting in petty local govt isues for the sake of a handful of votes. DONCHI KUBEBE on 20th of Sept 2011

  6. I have said this before: too much power to the President.

Have a constitution which stops this. Yet when Zedians got the chance to sit

on the NCC, kufilila munsenga. K200 billion gone. Ubupuba.

  7. wherever he go, he want to pretend to be a saint…. Too late….. No vote for yu this year mr sturbon president…… Sata uyo abwela…. Muyenda baba!

  8. At this stage even thoze whose huzbandz/wivez have run away would like the prezident to intervene.

  9. This RB is a dull chap. How can he say he doesnt know why houses are being Demolished. He dissolved Cabinet that same morning and was therefore the Minister of Local Govt and he is supposed to know!

Clear sign of incompetence. Beat it asibweni!

  10. Mr President, On this one, the Council has a point. That compound is an eyesore and illegal. Ndola does not have many such shanties at the entrance to the city. the earlier council demolished it, the better.

  11. I feel the President should have told the residents that he was going to consult the council and find out why houses were being demolished. The fact is the council has reasons for taking such measures. We should not allow illegality in the name of winning elections. What is wrong is wrong. We have so many of such illegal buildings making it difficult for proper infrustructure development to take place. People building on illegal plots must have their buildings brought down. We cannot continue like this. This must serve as a warning to all others. Before you obtain a plot make sure you are getting it from the right office. There are so many crooks posing as council or ministry of lands officials. They even have stamped documents that look genuine when in fact not. Please be on the lookout.

  12. Therein lies the problem: a president who will not obey the law of the land. Illegal structures should be demolished or eles Zambia will look like Mogadishu. It’s worse in Lusaka – Ibex Hill and Lusaka West where MMD cadres have illegally occupied land belonging to private individuals and have made these areas look like Somalia, which has no functional government.

  13. That is a PF run council demolishing houses yet they want to be voted into power. What will happen if they form govt? More houses will be demolished. Does that action make sense when day in day out our politicians are talking of empowering Zambians with their own accommodation. Be on Red Alert.

  14. You foolish people stop insulting the president. You are so full of malicious hatred and you will soon run mad when RB win elections. There is few spaces at Chainama to accommodate you because you are about to learn it the bitter way. RB is wiser and better than old Sata who is simply violent and full of insults. No matter you his children are following his foot steps. Rb anounces election date sata jumps on it that he is the one who forced him to do that.

  15. I fully endorse No.9 views.A number of PF kaponyas have lately petitioned RB to intervene in their bedrooms as they are failing to impregnate their spouses.OVER TO YOU RB.

  16. Bwenzani, these guys are after your own motorcade. They also want to have a share of it. You need to stop them it’s yours! How can we all share a single motorcade. Sata Just go to onother country and fine an easier motorcade to inherit, leave Bwenzani alone to enjoy what is god-given to him to enjoy alone. Mwandi Bwenzani you have one life, like Kaunda used to say.

  17. No traffic Jam for Benzani, good. I was on the M4 from Berkshire to Greater London the other day and there was traffic jam, ‘choker blocker’, and thereafter went onto the M25, it was misery. For Bwenzani travelling on the road through Kansenshi to Chifubu, as I can see, it’s like on oiled wheels. Bwenzani hold onto that which you can see and have, it’s you and no one should get it from you. Otherwise these guys will send you back to the farm. I am sure you are not having that! Get VJ to rig it if you have to man.

  18. This man has turned Zambia into a home made country. Go tell then that former president Banda has said that dont demolish…
