KCM plans to restock Hippos

Share

Konkola Copper Mines says plans to restore a Habitat for Hippos on Kafue River to support tourism.

Director of Finance Vinod Bhandwat says the mining company has submitted a proposal to the Zambia Environmental Management Authority seeking approval to restore the Hippo pool on the Kafue river, between Chingola and Chililabombwe.

Mr Bhandwat says the natural habitat has in the last few years been affected by natural and human activities.

He says once an embankment, which previously attracted hippos is repaired, environmental experts expect hippos to once again troop to the area.

Mr Bhandwat said this in a statement released to ZNBC News in LUSAKA.

He says KCM will continue to provide necessary support to the tourism sector and that the mining company will continue to play a role in the development of the tourism sector in Zambia.

Mr Bhandwat says Zambia is a beautiful country endowed with immense natural resources, including the famed Victoria Falls, South Luangwa and Kafue National Parks, which are habitats to rare species birds and animals that must be promoted.

  1. Surely you have failed to increase and improve salares of your employees and yet you want to start spending money on useless thing shame with your 3%…………….

  2. How about rehabilitating the roads and infrastructure in Chingola before you start thinking of hippos. ZCCM used to give back to the communities but you have failed to maintain was already started.

  3. This is one of the companies in Zambia which is run by croocks. This just a way of trying to hoodwink the public about the mess which is actually happening right inside the company. Employees in the KCM 1 – KCM 4 category have been abundantly negleted with very poor salaries and conditions of services where as the KCM 5s and above up to management level enjoy better conditions of services with very good salaries. Right now, the management just want to offer a 3% payrise to the employees in the KCM1-KCM 4 category and refused entirely to evaluate the jobs accordingly. They are th people who actually do the job and make KCM tick and they want to use the profits to the welfare of Hippoes at Kafue instead of improving the conditions of service for their employees, what a shame. May HEMCS help

  4. My ass restocking, first improve employeers conditions of service and salary increament then to start prasinig animal to human lifes. 3%……………..3%…………what a jok…..

  5. In short kcm is saying they would rather spend on hippos than the people of chingola. In fact they are saying hippos are better than chingola people.

  6. a direct insult to our minister of mines. its him who gave a directive to these infestors to improve workers’ conditions and they come with this nonsense. improving the welfare of hippos than their own workers. mr. minister please act now or we will loose faith in you.

  7. KCM has started evaluating its assets. Its rumoured that they want to pull out because of the new rules that the new Govt has implemented. The increament of mineral tax from 3% to 6%, declaring copper through BOZ before it’s exported and reducing the number of expatriates to 50.

  8. Ya right…When these selfsame Hippos start cutting fishermen in half like cream doughnuts in 5 years time these KCM foreign managers will be a thousand miles enjoying themselves in their tax havens abroad and this will be a taxpayers problem.

  9. Let them the Indiana Jones leave & welcome Anglo America kaili data naishibikwa. Akale pa bondi when there is little or no food, our parents used to give the little food or find food for our young brothers/sisters, but what KCM has done is increase salaries of KCM5 & above employees who are Sectional Engineers & above then leave out KCM1-KCM4 who do the work & report to these pipo above who just sit in there offices balenyafye ifisushi some to as high as K2m but KCM1-4 offered 3% just imagine. Tulechi vuvula ba kembo every company even your contractor KCM is paying has increased salaries as high as K1m – K2m, whats the problem with you ba mwenye? And you want max production, money in the mining industry is a motivator & production will increase like never expected . . . .Poseniko amano guy
