A 15-YEAR-OLD boy of Mwaiseni in Isoka district in Muchinga Province has saved a-day-old baby that was thrown into a pit latrine by its mother in an attempt to kill it.

ZANIS reports that efforts to get a comment from Police spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela for comment on the matter failed by press time.

However, Police sources in Nakonde confirmed the incident yesterday saying that the baby weighing 3.4 kg was thrown into an 8 meter-deep pit latrine by its mother around 11:00 hours yesterday.

The infant was only retrieved alive at about 16:10 hours.

The rescue operation team led by detective inspector Dominic Tembo lowered a 15-year-old boy, Patrick Sichone into the pit latrine whilst tied to a rope to rescue the baby boy.

The rescued baby was immediately rushed to Isoka District Hospital where it is currently admitted and its condition is said to be stable and out of danger.

Mother to the baby who has since been arrested by the Police has been identified as Asha Nambaya a single mother with three children of Mwaiseni village in chief Kafwimbi’s area in Isoka district.

And the boy who rescued the baby said he accepted to be lowered into the pit latrine to rescue the baby because he saw it crying inside the pit latrine and was convinced that it was was alive.

Sichone said he was happy to have saved a human life especially that it was an innocent baby who was thrown into a pit latrine by its mother in an attempt to kill it.

Meanwhile, Society for Women Against AIDS in Zambia (SWAAZ) Coordinator for Muchinga and Northern Province Maggie Siame has condemned the behavior of some women who were in the habit of throwing away children.

Mrs. Siame said the law should deal firmly with such women once arrested adding that her organisation was worried with the increased cases of women dumping children in Isoka district.

She also disclosed that her organization will take care of the baby boy that is currently receiving treatment at the district hospital and will continue taking care of it even after it has been discharged until such a time when authorities would decide otherwise.

    • Wembushi iwe utalikafye nefyo tawishibe. That’s not a lie, and secondly it’s 15 years and not 5. I didnt know that prostitution could drain people’s thinking ability.

  1. The government must reward the young man, he did a recommendable job. the police were afraid to go inside but he believed the child was alive and did what the police were paid to do. I f the boy is school going, let the government put him on bursary and award him with a medal for his bravery.

  2. Why opening the legs for sex if you cant handle the results that follows such acts. A big and healthy baby of 3.4kg? She is inscern. So maybe she had sex just for a packet of shakeshake. Shame!

  3. Dear audience lure called Mushota; I believe it was 15years old boy and not 5years old, You know LT is like writen by grade twos or drunkereds. They have no time to monitor what they send to less interlectuals like youself.

  4. THE HEADLINE IS MISLEADING. ITS A 15YEAR OLD BOY SAVING A 1DAY OLD BABY. GIVE THE BABY TO THE MOTHER AND THE PENALTY SHOULD BE TO REPORT TO THE POLICE STATION EVERY DAY UNTIL THE CHILD TURNS 20YEARS.

  5. ITS 5YRS OLD BOY NOT 15 YRS,AND THE CHAP NEEDS TO HONOURED IN FUTURE
FOR SAVING THE LIFE OF UN INOCENT BABY,COME NEXT YR 24 TH OCTOBER,I WILL TALK TO MY PF PRSDT OVER THIS.THIS IS THE YR OF ACTION,AD THE CHAP ACTED ACCORDINGLY.AND YOU THE POLICE FIND OUT THE CONDITION OF THIS WOMAN IS MIGHT BE INSANE?

  6. Lusaka Times what is your problem?? Your heading reads “a day year old baby” instead of “a day old baby”

  7. Ba LT, there is always something wrong with them. Look the title says a 5year old boy saves a one day year old baby. While in the artical they say a 15year old boy saves a oneday old baby. Which is which? This paper is also very disturbing, it is just because we always think on their behulf that is why we even open it.

  8. God bless the young man for saving a life. Yes, he should be honoured, e.g an education bursary all the way to Unza. I second the motion.

  9. President Sata please please please honour this young hero! He is not a policeman but he did a most crucial police job!

  10. Da wman must be full of demons!she needs deliverance!NGO wil luk afta baby bt wt about da other children anyway? She wil go to jail n childrn to street ka?

  11. SWAAZ coordinator seems quite misguided, HAS SHE EVER EXPLORED REASONS WHY THESE WOMEN DUMP THEIR babies??? Throwing people into prison is probably the last option.
Reasons stretch from psychiatric problems to socio-economic problems. In an economy such as ours, & the profile of the individual in question, offers a very clear insight as to why she did it. She is probably the sole earner in this household, her income earning activities could be well entrenched in the result obtained here. I would expect SWAAZ to be more informed of the root causes of baby-dumping! People in NGO’s should be in these Orgs for a reason, NOT SIMPLY SPLASHING AROUND IN DONOR FUNDS!!!

  12. My friend was left as a baby in a dumpster by her mother, but she was rescued and later adopted. She does not say “my stepmom” or “stepdad”, and they treat her the same as her sibling who is related to them by blood. I don’t know how she feels about the woman who gave birth to her, and she doesn’t know who she was, but she now has a baby of her own that she is a good mother to. So, I hope that this baby, too, is found and adopted by parents who will love her or him. As for the mother, the best thing to do is to give her a psychiatric evaluation and see what is going on, is she afraid of the father, does she have postpartum depression or is she just bad and deserve jail time. For a mother to do that, especially one who already has children, she needs emotional help.

  13. let the policeman be awarded, he was so brave to lower a 15 yr old boy by a rope into the pit latrine, what if the rope cut? 2 lives would have been lost. The policeman is so good at physics, by judging the strength of the rope against laws of gravity.
