The Drug Enforcement Commission has arrested the Secretary General and the Finance Manager of Zambia Red Cross Society for theft and money laundering offences involving over K1 billion.

DEC acting public relations officer Samuel Silomba tells QFM that Charles Mushitu, 44, of plot No. 31326 Chalala in Lusaka and Sydney Chituta, 31, of plot No. 797 Chilenje in Lusaka have been arrested for theft by clerk or servant contrary to section 272 as read with 278 of the Penal Code Chapter 87, and for money laundering contrary to section 7 of Act 14 of 2001 of the Laws of Zambia.

Mr Silomba explains that it is alleged that on dates unknown but between 1st January 2008 and 31st December, 2011, the duo did steal a total of K1.4 billion, funds which came into their possession by virtue of their office as Secretary General and Finance Manager, respectively.

He says the stolen funds were meant for water and sanitation projects in Southern Province.

He adds that the two suspects are believed to have acquired property which includes houses, cars, and plots.

Mr Silomba says further, Mr Mushitu was found with an AK47 Rifle with 30 rounds of ammunition without authority, and he has since been charged with being in possession of an offensive weapon contrary to section 85 of Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

The two suspects have since been released on bond and will appear in court soon.

  1. why didn’t you just shoot these niggas with their own gun. what was the gun for? no wonder cases of aggravated robbery are on the upswing.

  2. The two have been at the helm of Zambia Red Cross for ages. Repossess their properties (houses and cars) and jail them.

  3. I HOPE THE UPND AND MMD WILL NOT SAY THAT THESE GUYZ ARRESTED ARE ALOS MMD CADRES………………… BA KA BWALALA

  4. A couple of weeks ago, RED CROSS Zambia (RCZ) issued a statement on this investigation which is dated like 3-4 yrs now, stating that it tantmount to harassment of it’s officials. Can we now have another official statement from RCZ about the outcome of this investigations which has revealed gross embazzlement of funds meant for uplifing the standards of poor poeple in our country as well as being in possession of a weapon. This this the cause of RED CROSS?

  5. This was the normal life in the SANGWAPO GOVERNMENT ( MMD), EVERYBODY TOOK THEIR SHARE AT THE EXPENSE OF THE POOR PEOPLE. No respect for HUMAN RIGHTS.

  6. No. 7 Bill

When did Zambia Red Cross society(ZRSC) change to become RCZ? am a member of Reformed church in zambia and feel offended by your using rather abusing these letters(RCZ).

  7. I dont how much a second hand Hammer costs and the salary of one accounts officer at Zambia red cross society was, or if at all he does anyother business, but I remember the vehicle(Hammer) he bought was cleared around k100m. Am not saying he stole the money.

  8. It is mostly the bembas and easterner on arrest: why?
what is this “have been arrested for theft by clerk or servant contrary” ba LT??? ooooooooffff ama bombo ubwingi.

  9. Sad story seems most NGOs if not NGIs (Non-Government Individuals) are out 2 exploit donors in the name of helping the poor. At independence we only had government fighting the scourge and poverty levels were below 50%. Currently we have thousands of NGOs involved in poverty eradication, in contrast levels are up almost 80% when the figure is supposed to drop due to increased # of NGOs. Mushitu saga now explains why!

  10. Mushitu has been a crook through and through from his days at Zambia Daily Mail to Public Service Pension Fund to Red Cross.

  11. Damn guy even had an AK47. Now he is at the deep end! Thats an assult military rifle. Wonder what he was using it for.

  12. This cousin of Liato was he involved in armed robbery too, what was ak 47 for, please investigate. Those fellows from Kaoma are tarnishing Barotse people, plus Musokotwane from liuwa.

  13. Thats how bad theft and selfishness has gripped this country. The red-cross, the church just about every institution — this is really sad.

  14. This guy was a Police Reservist for a long time. Bwana IG Dr Malama, you shud scrutinise these Police Reservists, they are the guys who tarnish the image of the service. They commit crimes and hide under the Police tag. Remember the chap who led to a riot in Kalingalinga was also a reservist. Now this guy, stealing big time from a humanitarian organisation then put on a police uniform with a high rank and go around arresting petty criminals – what a joke. I think it shud be like in SA where they want to introduce a different kind of uniform for reservists for easy identification.
