Government has refuted media reports that the Copperbelt University (CBU) has been closed indefinitely following the hail-storm that blew off the roofs of two buildings at the Campus.

Education Minister John Phiri has told Parliament yesterday that the time the incident happened the University was already on routine which has since been extended to allow for repair works to the damaged buildings before the University can reopen.

Dr Phiri says the University was due to reopen on 3rd March for the 2012/2013 academic year.

He says Government and the University management is hoping that the University will reopen within a month after the repairs works have been completed.

Dr Phiri says the University Council will meet tomorrow to give direction as to when exactly the University will reopen.

He adds that the ministry has put in place a team of experts to assess the extent of damage and design corrective measures.

He further stated that ministry of Education is determined to ensure that the Copperbelt University reopens as quickly as the University Council directs.

  1. How can you close and institution which was yet to open?? Zambian media bwafya, they should have said CBU extends opening date…..

    • @Exhaust Blown Diffuser, English is only our second language…Just like you have made a mistake, the media also made a mistake. Surely how do you extend the opening date? what is this supposed to mean in your opinion? Perharps you should have said”CBU extends the vacation… or closure… Ala bwafya naiwe wine mwe!!

    • “CBU EXTENDS VACATION” OR “CBU NOT OPENING ON 3RD MARCH” OR “CBU EXTENDS CLOSURE” OR “CBU DEFFERERS OPPENING DATE” . There is no way an istitution can extend opening date. That means elongating the opening by more hours than 24. Ichisungu bane.

    • @Bull Doz and Amos
please stop it, you guys need to go back to grade 8 english. you could have looked up the word ‘extend’ in the dictionary before exposing your ignorance. One definition of ‘extend’ is to ‘prolong’. learn to educate yourself first before u comment on something u dont know.

  2. But the institution was due to be OPENED on the 3rd March!!! What closure are we talking about? Is it that our citizenry have no time to complete sentences or pass exams or what is wrong? I get amused by most postings and reports.

  3. @1 E B Diffuser,
Ba Diffuser tamwaishiba ifisungu naimwe muleikalafye. CBU is closed, so when they said it closes indefinitely, it means it continues closed until further notice, or it won’t open as scheduled until additional notice! it continues to be closed indefinitely.

Anyhow, they should please open in good time.

    • Ba malembe you should differentiate remains closed indefinitely and closed indefinitely..Closed indefinitely means an institution was open due to some issues they decide to close the institution till further notice, remains closed indefinitely means the institution was closed due to some issues remains closed beyond the date at which it was supposed to open..the media never used the correct grammar baba

    • Ha ha.. mulefitontonkanishiha mu cibemba. ‘remains closed’ or ‘closed’ means the same thing in this case.

  4. Throughout human history it takes a vision to build a nation not aimless barking, haphazard  and threats on a strong willed generation of those who have tested fundamental rights. Without a vision people perish and kaponyas have no vision but some circus they can only offer. Here we are of kaponyas by kaponyas for kaponyas.

    • I disagree with you ba Senior citizen. The MMD had no vision for 20 years, and PF has just inherited that mess. How do you expect results in 6 months? I think you can see better media coverage compared to MMD; and plans to commence the implementation of things. The Kaponyas have a master plan, and when results start hitting you will be shocked. Better still, how come you the educated “some of us” lost to a kaponya? We taught you “strategy” not from the book, but from the field. Put up or put up!! Don’t shut up though because we know you lot will never.

  5. 1. THE MINISTER DOESNT UNDERSTAND WAT IT MEANS TO CLOSE INDEFINATELY, LOLEST.. HOW CAN HE SAY CBU HAS NOT CLOSED INDEFINATELY WEN THE OPENING DATE IS NOT DEFINATE?! 2. TAKALEFUMA! Why should we close an institution due to a 3% damage?!

  6. journalism in zambia needs to improve in terms of standards for example when three is a road traffic accident where lives have been lost you read times they will report 5 have died , daily mail 3, the post 6, ZNBC seven and half leaving the people in suspense. Anway what do you expect in this errar of exam leakages.

    • Its work pressure and most of them are not computer literates..Coming to yo story concerning a road traffic accident perhaps the some of them who survived the accident died later or afterward due to injuries hence the progressive increase in the number of people who died

    • You are very right. With the current rampant leakage dependency syndrome of most of the students in most of the high learning institutions, it leads to supply of incompetent human capital to various industries.

  7. Did Serpent Cobra Sata attend tertially education and you think he cares about you CBU students? Will open CBU next year.

  8. PF, the government of Kaponyas by Kaponyas for Kaponyas has not failed anyone just yet. The issue here is that they took what we call a “poisoned chalice”. All of a sudden people are so aware of their rights, needs and entitlements. The levels of neglect for 20 years reached alarming levels such that change of government meant the demand for immediate salvation. Worse, the 90days slogan has worked against our beloved government. That said, we do not expect any love lost between us and the “educated” ba “some of us”. We just need to re-strategise for delivery of programs. The rest, its ok, you can complain we will listen. But wait for results bane. We are still planting the fields.

    • Give me some examples in which you can say PF is excelling. The Ag’s pronouncement in the Mmembe case or perhaps the hiring and de-hiring of Museba or the daily re-aligning of ministries; the alarming 100% increment/non-increment of health workers salaries? In the short period PF has been in power I have heard more weird things than Kaunda, Mwanawasa, Chiluba (incl the 10 yrs Sata was in MMD) and Banda combined.

  9. Ba fee. co.lor, the structures that MMD put up are the ones that have been destroyed by rain. What kind of engineers do we have in Zed?

  10. All you guys stop it ! English is just like French and Spanish, all foreign languages blog in Bemba which you know better before you all start writing rubbish here atase. As long as you can understand each other it’s fine just keep to the topic.
