LWSC concerned with increased illegal water connections

Share

Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company (LWSC) have once again appealed to the general public to desist from connecting water to their businesses or households illegally.

Company Public Relations Officer Topsy Sikalinda said people must always report to the water utility company when they need its services as compared to engaging themselves in illegal practices.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today, Mr. Sikalinda noted that illegal connection of water incurs a cost on the company as it results in water leakages which become the company’s responsibility.

He said recently, the water utility company was replacing an average of 30 water pipes in Matero east where the business community in the area had connected themselves illegally causing damage to the pipeline.

Mr. Sikalinda noted that the trend retards national development adding that the monies spent on repairing the water pipes in Matero could have been used on giving a service to other people in need.

He said people should instead be working with the company to enable it serve them better.

Mr. Sikalinda further noted that illegal connection of water to any property is punishable by law under 1997 Water and Sanitation Act Cap 28.

He therefore reiterated his call to the public to report any illegal connections that may be going on in communities to the water utility company.

Mr. Sikalinda said failure to do so may compromise water quality supply as more bacteria will have access to the water.

  1. LWSC and other service providers including ZESCO you are partly to blame for the illegle connections.People are developing infrasture only to wait for several years before you can connect them. And the operation of these utility companies are fragmented. You find say residential plots are allocated legaly or not but no sewarage, water and electricity. No planning. We need to change as a people

  2. when is LWSC connecting the rest of chalala with water especially the area across the ZESCO pylons as that area is becomming a source of health concern more so that boreholes are being put up very very close to septic tanks and soakaways….

  3. LWSC should work on its ineficiencies and rid itself of corruption. They do not have a time frame in which to connect water when one needs it. It can take fifteen years. Most new residential areas are not connected. Corruption is the order of the day in these utility companies worst still ZESCO.

  4. Reduce connection fees as # 1 has said its taking long people to be connected thats why there using ineciative.

  5. Every where corruption is the oder of the day.Talk about ZESCO,to just fix apre-paid meter one wants money and yet it is them that brought that idea.LWSC,you started connecting water in kalikiliki how far has the exercise gone?We need wwater in mtendere East.Move faster we are ready to pay what is due to you.

  6. people need water evry day….bt what can they do if LWSC is sleeping yet people know how to get water? Should they wait for an unknown moment when LWSC shall come from their “coma” to provide water? U don`t need to complain, but u need to be efficient in your work!

  7. you should also respond to the people’s needs faster..we are tired of waiting..whats happening @Meanwood..LWSC>>no water upto now..

  8. A number of issues have been raised in the comments above, let me take this opportunity to respond to a few, when is LWSC going to connect water to chalala? we currently have a project running in the area, we secured a loan of about 17 billion kwacha to The specific works to be undertaken under the project, includes construction of new water distribution network extensions of approximately 49 kilometers. The total number of properties to be service are 2,005 in hill view and 742 in libala south (f/1080) and kamwala south (f/917), giving a combined total of 2,747 properties.
