Economist Chibamba Kanyama has been appointed Director-General of the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC).

Mr Kanyama, who once worked for the national broadcaster, takes over from Mr Joe Chilaizya.

Information, Broadcasting and Labour Minister, Fackson Shamenda announced at a media briefing in Lusaka yesterday that Mr Chilaizya has been redeployed into foreign service.

“Mr Kanyama is the new Director-General for ZNBC and his appointment is with immediate effect. This follows the deployment of Mr Joe Chilaizya by his Excellency the President Mr Michael Sata in the foreign service,” he said.

Mr Shamenda thanked Mr Chilaizya for the valuable service he rendered as ZNBC Director-General during the last five months.

“As we thank Mr Chilaizya, we welcome Mr Kanyama who as you all know is not new to ZNBC and the media fraternity in general, having worked at the national broadcaster for a number of years,” he said.

Mr Kanyama is a senior journalist and an economist.

  1. I hope your CV wont be tainted by PF. By the way..will you continue your commentaries on socio-economic issues or maybe ready to be axed?

  2. If CK whats to maintain his reputation, he should refuse the appoint for the following reasons:
    – An independent analyst like him should be politically neutral. This will destroy the career he has managed to build for years
    – He will not be able to manage ZNBC without being politically GOOD to PF. Its impossible to say negative things or the truth to politicians in Africa if they pay your salary
    – Out of principle, after being called a fake economist by Sata, someone who has never finished grade 7, CK by accepting this position would have acknowledged that indeed he accepted what Sata said.
I have met CK and as a man of principle i will be surprised if he accepts this position. But in Africa principle are short lived

    • maybe this is a chance for him to prove to all of us that some people cannot let their principles be compromised.

  3. That is exactly what I said Sata should have done that time when he appointed to dull arrogant ignorant Chilaizya. Whihc ever diplomatic mission they have sent Joe chilaizya to is in trouble. Chibamba is my contemporary and friend. I only hope politics won’t end up messing him up by 2016. Sometimes it is better to be fired for your principles than live in temporary glory only to lose it all in just a few years. Good Luck to him!!!!

  4. Chibamba Kanyama may be a ‘fake’ economst but he believs in himself and with always make progress in life despite what other people say.Thank God that Chilaizya guy was removed.I think Sata’s advisors have finally woken up.

  5. Congratulation Chibamba. We hope to see new and sensible initiatives and not the boring politics that have always dominated the ZNBC airwaves

  6. Congratulations Chibamba Kanyama on your appointment. As #9 Ka’Doyo has pointed out, there is great and urgent need to revamp the ZNBC airwaves. ZNBC is the most boring radio and tv in the world. The programmes in local languages are the most useless in the whole world. Some have been running since the second republic and there lots of repetitions. Some continuity are very boring one wonders how they were employed in the first place. In addition, some of the are clearly drunk on air. Please Kanyama sweep ZNBC clean

  7. Our president is at it again!! Its either he realigns the Ministries, the districts or he disappoints some people…..are those the only thing he can do at state house? Awe Kwena………

  8. Ba Chibamba we know you like to be in the spot light and you are educated, but wiser and educated people like you are refusing appointments by PF….think twice and let them sink on their own….money is not everything but intergrity and diginty….!!all the best with your decision…!!

  9. Be professional and protect your future. Don’t allow the PF to taint the image you have built for yourself. You have been a potential leader in the making. Ulimuchende wakuchundu and so we expect professionalism to reign at ZNBC. Cadre mentality by professionals like you we detest.

  10. Well lets give him a benefit of doubt while we deserve to know where Joe went wrong ang the circumstances under which the same Chibamba had left ZNBC in 1996 if i am not mistaken. Kanawa, we do not want a PF OR ANY PARY CONTROLLED MEDIA,we fed up. Stand up and be counted as one of the most exemplelary media manager

  11. Congrats badaala, redeem ZNBC. I hope your tenure of office is secured. I also hope this ‘hire and dump’ thing of BaSata ends soon.

  12. Congrats and all the best CK. I know you are able and willing to perform to the best of your abilities, your track record speak for itself.
However, it is worrying to note the PF trend of governance. Instead of ‘hand picking’ senior managers at public institutions, they should b strengthening and empowering these institutions to run independently. At ZNBC for, one would have thought the board would have advertised the position and selected a suitable person. The mess they did with Chilaizya is still fresh!! Wisdom is not domiciled in politicians only

  13. thats his field o study not as he claims his an economist. true economists have PHDs at bank of zambia. Congrats mwana!

  14. Chibamba Kanyama ..please don’t take it up..they will just finish you off ..these pf guys are upto no good ..continue with the good work you are doing so far!!viva integrity!!!!!!!!!

  15. The only problem with zambians they are experts in just looking at the negative side of life.If sata called chibamba fake economist it should wont all of us?The man was just playing politics. How many bad names has sata himself been called in his political career.muletontonkanya.In any case why do we want to paint this picture that PF is full of people who can just pollute others? It is a good thing that sata and his team has embraced chibamba even after calling him fake economist. The nation has to heal why should we allow ourselves to remain in the past.our tonga brothers and sisters whats your say since few day ago you were complaining that ZNBC has given UPND blackout, which was not even true.why do you see things that are not there?lets not see things with tribes.

  16. so chilaizya will always have to work in the ministry headed by given lubinda? i honestly smell a rotting rat. i have nothing against the gentleman though.. as for CK, as good as he is, his days are now numbered..

  17. Congratulations to Chibamba kanyama. He’s our brother in the Lord. May God establish in that new role.

  18. Congrats to him,i wonder if he’s ever been in one senior position for over 2 years but it’s not his fault,it seems in Zed if you can talk a lot and appear too much on tv and print media you can land any job in the corporate world and in politics no wonder Chibamba is on demand looking at the number of jobs he’s done in the last few years.

  19. Why does PF dump every Jim and Jack into diplomatic service. Can’t we have qualified people there? No wonder we dont see much benefit in having these embassies out there.

  20. ba engineer australia these are personal decisions, you will suffer with your so called principles, its one zambia one nation,  stop sounding like a frustrated tribalist. why should’nt KC become boss, will you be fending for his family needs, you so childish, and shame on you for thinking sata ended at grade 7. you the so called graduates non of you will ever make a good president, you can just ruin our country with your so called pompous attitude. atase i ve been watching your miserable comments , God help your frustrated ‘@$$$.

  21. All you guys saying he should not take up the job, has it occured to you that discouraging such pricipled personalities is actually what has landed us where we are now? We need pipo like him to be in such places to make a positive change.I for one dont think if Chibamba got dumped from ZNBC would suffer. I mean, just look at his CV. Lots of organisations would be knocking at his door to have his services. He wouldnt even end up in foreign (dump site) service has the case as become for rejects. Fow now lets tap into his brains and see what contribution he can make to the countrt. We need intellectuals like him in such strategic institutions. Not robots.

  22. Its true the so called Australian engineer is avery frustrated tribalist and I can guess he is a technician Tonga like I said before.

  23. Australian engineer sounds like a very bitter and personal man. What is your problem? I have seen most of your contributions and are very, very obnoxious. For your information, Sata never finished grade 7 because there was no grade 7 at that time. There are many highly educated people like Mumba Malila who are serving the present government. Don’t tell me you are smarter than them because you live in Australia. Tone down your obnoxious comments, you sound like a kid who had a difficult childhood!!!

  24. CK refused to accept the job until they meet his conditions and that’s a smart move especially with the everyday firing and hiring- its scary:(

  25. australian engineer u re fake, indeed u want to see evrythng wth tribe.u wl be ashamed that chibamba has actualy taken up the znbc top job otherwise the minister wudnt ve gone ahead to announce.sata is president u moron of an engineer whether u like it or not.remember your under 5 bantustan hh wl never rule zed.chibamba congrats & plz shake up znbc

  26. The most well known and popular catch phrases in GRZ, ‘He has been redeployed into foreign service’ and ‘was thanked for the valuable service rendered’.
#4, That’s a very good observation, the foreign service has for a long time been reduced into a dumping ground for all rejects.

  27. Sata has seen some ability in you. Ask him what he specifically wants you to do. The aim is to make you worship him. Always remember, political appointment is not on merit but how one meets the appointing auythority’s aims. You are a broom to sweep the dirt and if you can’t sweep you are not needed. The day you will clean ZNBC, you are out. And when the president fires you they shunt you to the starting point, erasing what you had done. If you a katemba before the appointment you wont get back to it. Its a job take it and feed the family while it lasts. Forget what you said and agreed at your acceptance time.

  28. i think its time Zambian started thinking positively.i have been following the comments on this newspaper with sadness.its seem every decision the government makes is condemned to death.its high time we gave the PF government a chance in particular President Sata.its barely 5 month since he assumed the position, and u do not expect him to change things in the blink of an eye.Lets give him time to implement the changes, why are people expecting the President to run the Country the same way his predecessors did and still expect things to change.President Sata has taken a different and positive approach to run the Government which should encouraged.i believe he has made good appointments to different government organization, which should be commended

  29. This Snake Clearly has no leadership skills for that high position, he should appoint himself governor and ask someone else to rule on his behalf. If Chibamba accepts this job, he is doomed.
This man thinks ruling is appointing and firing. Eventually i see even chaps like Given being kicked out of pf.

  30. Appointed today and fired tomorrow, or as they say, deployed into the dumping otherwise known as diplomatic service.
