Zambians urged to speak against assault on democracy

Share

Catherine Namugala

Former Tourism and natural resources Minister Catherine Namugala has called on Zambians to protect the democracy that the country has continued to enjoy.

Ms. Namugala pointed out that recent developments and attempts by government to frustrate the opposition are a threat to the country’s democratic tenets.

She says the opposition is an important tool to the development of any country as it provides checks and balances on government policies.

Ms. Namugala explained that it is incumbent upon well meaning Zambians to speak against the alleged assault on democracy by the PF government.

She has however expressed her confidence in the judiciary stating that all matters before the courts will be handled expeditiously without any interference.

Earlier this month the spokesperson for MMD -MS Dora Siliya said the party is legally challenging the government’s Registrar of Societies for what the party insisted was its “unlawful” de-registration.

Dora Siliya said the head of the government agency is an undisciplined government official, who is attempting to obliterate the MMD. Machinations, she said, will not work.

“Our lawyers have taken up this matter to get an execution of stay. However, we know that this is a step to obliterate the MMD.”

Chief Registrar of Societies, Clement Andeleki de-registered the MMD for non compliance with the Societies Act.
The Registrar of Society maintained that the former ruling party MMD owes them over K390 million in arrears. He explained that the money is from the 42 registered branches of the MMD across the country and dates back to 1991.

    • How old are you? Where you there in the one party state system. Anybody who lived during would not say anything like this. Shame on you!!! We fought so hard to get the multiparty system. How can you want to go to your own vomit??

  1. Good message Cathy, what happened to the once vibrant civil society organisations? How opposition political parties? Learn a few tricks from Sata, when he was in oppostion, he actually helped MMD deliver because he ensured that he critised them through and through and they also tried to prove him wrong. Mwanawasa acknowledged this fact, no wonder he flew him out for specialist treatment as soon as he heard that he was sick.

Atucally, Sata may be the reason why MMD has some history of development, especially in the last 10 years.

  2. Ba Namugala. Now that UKWA’s actions have affected you thats when you speak out.The man has caused so much friction with many people only within 90×2 days. Now you can yap since its your turn.Whether its really democracy you are crying for I personally have second thoughts

  3. Andeleki will mention his masters who instructed him to deregister MMD. At that point he will languish in Chimbokaila alone. Namugala is frank and she says that opposition is good for checks and balances of the ruling party. That is to question when these buffoons start sneaking in and out of the country at will. Even a holiday is announced we used to hear that X has gone to Mfuwe on a two days working holiday, what is wrong with saying Michael Sata will be going or has gone to India on emergency medical treatment. None is immune to illness/sickness so what is so special about SATA who everyone new has been visiting hospitals in and out of Zambia for a very long time.

  4. Thanks Cathy, some morons on this blog just can’t see the importance of your message to their own well being and their children, despite the glaring events of the last 90 days x 2.

  5. This woman’s message is irrelevant and distorts the facts. MMD are their own worst enemies. Nobody (except their arrogance) told them to disregard their statutory obligations as an organisation, and they now want to stroke public sympathy because their jobs and salaries as MPs are on the line? Give us a break!! Democracy is about all people, all organisations being equal before the law and clearly MMD does not know jack about democracy if they think they deserve special treatment. To give the MMD special treatment THAT is the real threat to democracy – just make the f***k**g arseholes pay like the rest of us.

No apologies, but MMD are no longer the custodians of Zambian democracy. They have lost the plot and are in fact the enemies of democracy. JUST PAY UP YOU USELESS BIATCHES.

  6. I think the ascendancy of ukwa to the highest office of the land has brought more negatives than any positives. Who is responsible for his medical bills? The money that will be used on his medical bills and the eventual funeral procession plus the looming bye election will be too costly to imagine.
Mwanawasas fate also gobbled billion, money that has been wasted on these two guys will be equivalent to making new interlinking roads to all provincial capitals. In short these two guyz will be two biggest plunders coz they understood their sicknes long b4 becoming president

  7. If MMD had been as vindictive as Ukwa, PF wouldn’t be alive today. Unfortunately, the NGOs, Church and The Post all seem to be blowing Ukwa’s trumpet, while our young democracy and economy heads into a tailspin. There’s absolutely no policy direction and the country is indeed on autopilot. The president has not even held a single press conference, 6 months into office, to outline his govt’s vision. I don’t know what we did to deserve this curse.

  8. #9 MANAGER,
While I cautiously I share your concerns I find it very disappointing that we have two ‘offical versions’ about the president’s presence in India. On one hand the Zambian minister of foreign affairs is categorical that the president is on a 10-day holiday while on the other hand Indian medical authorities maintain that Mr Sata is receiving medical treatment for a serious illness.
This state of affairs can be viewed with extreme seriousness to warant an inquiry to establish who is telling the truth and who is not and heads could roll. I believe the people of Zambia are not that dull and they the know who is lying.

    • He is on holiday from his office to receive medical treatment. What is hard to understand? I have taken holiday from work to attend to my health before. Not all people should take sick leave. Sata has decided to take a holiday to take care of himself…I find this to be fine with me.

  9. @ no# 2 St. Lous yours is the best message. I am mad at the MMD for not paying their dues, at the UPND for not speaking viciously against MMD not paying; angry at PF for not employing ministers and civil service workers on intellectual and moral merit. It feels like 80% of PF running the country have zeal but no real methodical or satirical working processors.

  10. @ MMD Cheif Bootlicker soon after PF was elected you had wonderful points and ideas on how Sata would and was implementing policies in the nation. He has done a lot to curb relentless assorts on our national cake, but has to weed out deadwood ministers. Though the were great contributors to the PFs victory, I don’t believe GBM, Kabwili and Panji Kaunda should hold offices of that magnitude. I also do miss a beautiful women like Namugala being a minister, at times astetics are a must; kuona vyoyofeselako bana always in parliament is not good.

  11. That’s what we expected UPND to support but they looked only as far as their noses. They forgot that if democracy is compromised they would never have means of ascending to power themselves, let alone practice as a party with MP’s. It was disappointing to hear them distance themselves from a national cause and play narrow party politics. Zambia’s democracy needs to be defended. It’s envied by many nations world over and God forbid that we turn our nation 50 yrs backward in the monopoly of the likes of Kabimba.

    • If national democracy should be maintained, parties should play by the rules: MMD should pay their dues to allow them continue to give checks and balances.

  12. ‘Self medication is not an option,’ said the Doctor, her beautiful teeth flashing as she beamed at her reflection, ‘Preventative pill was too bitter to swallow so I will carry my fair share of this epidemic with pride and ask all the people whom I’ve infected to suck it up and blame everyone but those of us qualified to have seen it coming. Atchoo! No thank you dear, I don’t need a hankie. I much prefer to spread the contagion.’

  13. Its unfortunate that Zambia does not have a credible opposition as there was when MMD was in power.Namugala should be the last person to complain because they hounded out Magande from MMD in preference for ala bee whom i believe would have continued from where LPM left from and MMD could have been in power. we shouldnt have had to deal with vision less PF.some people should just shut the f@@k up

  14. Speaking out on democracy doesn’t mean demeaning women the way Catherine does. After she asked MMD women to strip why is she opening her mouth again? She is worthless.

  15. # 20 I really don’t understand why you are so upset with Namugala’s plan with naked demonstrations. Let her continue opening her mouth and continue keeping her legs closed.

  16. democracy in zambia has been raped, poverty skyrocketing, kwacha worse than found, no plan for employment and i wonder if we’re going to meet any of the MDGs.

  17. Save the legal fees you slippery crooks and pay the registrar, honestly how can you provide checks and balances if you yourself are unable to keep your books clean.
Only in Zambia, to hell with this lot!!!

  18. AHMEDABAD: The 75-year-old Zambian President, Michael Sata, underwent laser procedure at Samved Urology Hospital on Saturday for a urological disorder. The hospital majorly deals with patients of prostate, kidney stone and bladder surgery. The procedure was performed by urologist Dr Janak Desai.

Micheal Sata, also known as King Cobra in his home country, arrived in Ahmedabad on Friday. He is accompanied by his wife Christine Kaseba and a personal crew.

Sources in the health department said that the president suffers a medical problem involving his prostrate or urinary bladder. He had been suffering bleeding in the urine.

Officials said that Sata underwent a laser procedure on Saturday to stop bleeding. A battery of advance tests will be carried out.

  19. The only way the PF can defend itself is by pointing to hey performance indicators, thus far, there are none. Policies staged so far are quite empty and lack steam. I just hope Nevers mumba does not win the MMD presidency, I hope Mutati takes it. Sata will have a real challenge everyday of his next 4 years.

  20. The MMD broke a statutory law for having not paid their dues. In the US, breaking a statutory law would land you in jail and not just face de-registration. Its rather sad that democracy is being abused to break fundamental laws and everyone seem to agree for sake of saving the criminals and in this instance MMD.

  21. I don’t like Sata as a president, I love him as a Zambian and a parent. I feel for his family and PF he formed personally. May God touch him out there in India -amen

  22. Democracy according to my pretty little face means not paying statutory dues and getting away with it. Zambian men are such fo+ols with brains in their pants for a nice face like mine, they even have to think twice about something so straight forward like violating statutory acts. Did you see the look on their faces when I bluffed about running naked so we could get away with murder?? Democracy, my well-washed behind!!!

  23. Namugala amenena ukweli hapo.

  24. Namugala, you were so full of yourself when you were minister. I’m appaled at the PF govt’s failure in all sectors of our economy, but I can’t support you coz you enjoyed explaining the atrocities that you and your MMD mates did to this country, you failed to market Zed as a toutrist destination, each time you went out, it was shopping time to try and beautify your ugly shrunken body….just give us a break, shut up!

  25. What democracy did we enjoy under Namugalas’ MMD?I feel ba Namugala if you walk naked democracy may come to our eyes!
