FORMER MMD national secretary Katele Kalumba has vowed to remain in the party and continue speaking out on the wrongs in it and has asked party acting president Michael Mabenga to stop intimidating members with divergent views.
Speaking in an interview yesterday, Dr Kalumba said he was at liberty to speak on the wrongs in the MMD and that no member of the party would stop him from exercising his democratic right to do so in the former ruling party.
He said he would not be cowed by people like Mr Mabenga, adding that there was need for MMD leaders to be upright and speak out if the party was to remain relevant on the political scene.
Of late, Dr Kalumba has been issuing statements on the alleged poor leadership style in the former ruling party, remarks that have not gone down well with the top leadership.
But party chairperson, Mr Mabenga, now acting president, has repeatedly defended the MMD style of leadership.
“First, I want to make it clear that I don’t renew my card from Mr Mabenga’s office, I am not a national executive committee (NEC) member. I have a branch.
“I only belong to a branch and so I don’t owe Mabenga any explanation for any statements that I make. I dare him to go ahead with anything that he wants to do to me if he is a real chairman of the party,” Dr Kalumba said.
Dr Kalumba, who served as national secretary, said he scarified a lot for the MMD and therefore, he would not allow any member to intimidate him.
He said as chief executive officer of the MMD, there were times when he used his personal money to run the party’s affairs and as such, he would not accept to be intimidated by any individual, including Mr Mabenga.
“I was national secretary of the MMD and I sacrificed my personal money and so I will continue to speak without fear or favour.
“I ran that secretariat using my money and I will not accept to be intimidated by anybody,” Dr Kalumba said.
He said those who were now holding senior positions in the MMD were not around when the party was being founded.
Dr Kalumba said even at the time of forming the MMD, he made numerous sacrifices as well as contributions to ensure that the party became stronger.
He said the MMD then was strengthened because of his efforts and those of others and not the current crop of leaders.
“I am a founder member of the party and I don’t want to be intimidated by anybody,” Dr Kalumba said.

MMD leadership has lost direction. It is now the top leadership against itself. Dora vs Mutati, Katele vs Mabenga, Dora vs Mabenga etc. The MMD is fast cruising to self destruction, and the wheels are so fast that no one can stop them.

Under normal circumstances, a party’s defeat (both UPND and MMD) would signal a turnover of leadership. Zambia’s political scene quickly goes stale because the same people who plunge their parties into the ground continue to try to dig themselves out while sinking further… it is a catch-22. It would be interesting to watch what becomes of the MMD after their elections with a huge proportion of the old leadership that still think they contributed nothing to the failings of their party especially while in government…

Ba Katele please do not mix washing dirt in public with ‘democratic right’. Your thinking is shooking for a chap who held a very senior position in MMD. Discuss your party concerns internally or just keep quiet because you are actully very IRRITATING.

This thing of I was the first member of the party so everybody else shut up cannot wash, organisations grow with new membership otherwise they would die off as soon as the founder rmembers leave, same with companies. So ba Katele, the simple question is are you still a member of the MMD? If so then you are not behaving like a member. If not, then zip it up!
The convicted criminal Katele Kalumba and Fred Mmembe operate as a tag-team, their mission is to metaphorically body-slam the MMD party to the floor whenever an opportunity presents itself. Kalumba must serve his jail term the way Richard Sakala served his and there must be no sacred cows. Mmembe has offered Kalumba “good coverage” so long as he can dismantle the MMD before the next election. Mmembe, himself, needs to question why he is an accomplice to disseminating propaganda.

Dr Katele, of all people, you must be one of those who should have quietly retired and kept your mouth shut like Mrs Regina Chiluba has done. There may be a little respect left for you. We had great hope of a future leader in you but lo, greed and witch-craft overtook your intelligence by an irrecoverable distance. You would better serve behind the scenes as a mediator, conciliator, arbitrator on what is going on in MMD. The PF has just newly discovered Katele Kalumba as the most virulent (deadly) virus – worse than HIV – whom the rulling party has hired to kill and wipe off the MMD on the Zambian political landscape. Katele has a case to answer for having swindled a lot of public money. His accomplice (Sata=Ukwa) with whom he plundered the money is being protected by a Presidential immunity clause. Katele was actually implicated in this scandle by the late Mwanawasa, but curiously he opted to direct his criticism on an innocent RB who by then was humbly farming in Chipata. Both Katele and his wife behaved strangely against the MMD. Even Julius Malema is intelligent enough to criticise known individuals but strive to protect the integrity of the ANC. Katele is just a noxious opportunist.

We are not talking about magic or the laptop, but what is happening in the MMD as a political party. If you have any suggestions, or comments, just bring them up rather than taking us back to things you can’t even approve. Don’t be simple minded. Katele is a founding member of MMD and like anyone else, has democratic rights to air his views on what is happening in the party he helped form. Katele will do us good to keep quiet, MMD is what it is because of people like him, the problem we have as Zambians is that we easily forget, and start hero worshiping wrong doers. If MMD is “corrupt” he is at the centre. if there are structural problems in MMD he is at the centre, he was Secretary General, he is trying to reincarnate into a Saint now? NO NO NO.
The problem with most political leaders is that once in the opposition, they try they utmost worst to win favours with the ruling party. That is exactly the game Katele is playing. Every well meaning political party has in place structures where these so called divergent views can be discussed instead of running to the media every time a member has what he percieved to be divergent views. Fun how not so long ago they had collective views now its each man/woman for him/her self. Katele must not forget that he was found quilty in a court of law and I personally would not take kindly to a thief’s divergent views. Why is he not in jail by the way?
