President Sata tells off critics condemning Government for not evacuating George Kunda

President Michael Sata

Republican President Michael Sata has castigated individuals condemning government for not evacuating late former republican vice president George Kunda for specialist treatment outside the country.

President Sata says it is time Zambians started appreciating the quality of services the local health practitioners offer as evidenced by the successful operation on Robiana Muteka.

Mr. Sata says people should always understand that when someone’s time on earth is up, the will of God defeats science.

He was speaking at Lusaka’s Cathedral of the Child Jesus during the church service for the late former republican vice president George Kunda.

President Sata said self ordained pastors, who he said he could not name because they are already known, should not mislead people that government hesitated to evacuate Mr. Kunda for specialized treatment.

He says it is the same self ordained pastors without churches that condemned him for according Mr. Kunda an honorary state funeral.

President Sata says he is not the one to blame for not according late former republican vice president General Christon Tembo a state funeral because he was not the one in power at that time.

And President Sata, in the midst of the church service ordered Inspector General of Police Stella Libongani to quell a possible physical confrontation involving cadres outside the church who said were Dr. Nevers Mumba’s supporters.

Outside the church, cadres especially women from the opposition MMD and UPND bitterly complained of harassment by PF cadres, accusing them of intimidation during the funeral of their own member.

The women bemoaned that the behavior by the PF cadres is unbearable as it was not the case during the reign of the MMD.

The president led thousands of mourners at the church service for the late George Kunda, who died on Monday at the University Teaching Hospital and has since been put to rest at the Leopards hill memorial park.

Those who attended the church service included vice president Guy Scot, Chief Justice Ernest Sakala, Speaker of the national assembly Patrick Matibini, senior government officials, defence and security chiefs and leaders of various political parties.

And in his homily, Cardinal Merdado Mazombwe emphasized the need for faith in the almighty God, regardless of a situation.

Cardinal Mazombwe said death can never separate man from the love of God, as long as he believes.

And MMD acting party president Michael Mabenga said Mr. Kunda’s sudden death is a big blow to the nation but most especially to the party.

Mr. Mabenga says the party is comforted by the teachings of the gospel that no one on earth has got power to alter God’s plans on any man.

He also paid tribute to President Michael Sata and government for honoring late George Kunda, with three days of national mourning.

How many times Levy went abroad for specialist treatment and you don’t even seem to remember,or did you forget that the previous president went to S.A. For knee treatment ? Is’t criminal to seek treatment anywhere the head of state deem fit? Or have the doctotors told you there was an urgent need for Kunda to be evacuated? Silly Zambian .

  5. The late Christon Tembo was accorded a two-day state funeral by former president RB Banda. Is Zambia becoming a failed state – where the president has to order the police to maintain law and order? The police are fearful of their jobs after Malama was fired as IG when he offered Nevers Mumba protection, as an ordinary citizen, from PF cadres. Now the police do not protect anyone in opposition as they too may suffere the same fate as Malama.

  23. note that evacuations for specialist treatments are negotiated and recomended to the president by physicians treating the patient as to whether could be managed locally or else.GK ‘s illness was curerable at UTH except when God calls,it’s his will.

His demons or masters cannot rest and therefore have to cause confusion in the house of God. Its way too coincidental that he cant just sit still and shut his mouth in church, be it a funeral or regular sunday service. Its as if his spirit basically wage war with God. Havent you all noticed that no church service is incident free when he is around? He goes to the extent of conducting running commentaries, cracking jokes, facing the other way, pacing up and down in search of people to disturb/greet, etc etc anything to centre attention on him and off of God! I fully agree, so when Ukwa suffers his next heart seizure he should not “leg off” to Morningside or Bombay but go to UTH like Kunda because they have the same defibrillator there to resuscitate him like the have in Morningside. Though with Kunda I believe it would have been a waste of time and money, the man had fully blown AIDS and his time was up regardless of where he was evacuated to.

  59. its unreasonable for people to expect every govt official, ex or sitting, to be evacuated to SA or wherever. Zambians should realise that there are alot of issues to consider. And Doctors are always there to advise govt on whether there’s need for evacuate or not. When its your time, nothing can stop death, wherever you may be. You cannot refer or evacuate a patient with an ailment that can be handled locally! And because we don’t know why the doctors and govt thought it wise to leave him at UTH, lets not push for answers we can never get. Instead let us support the mourning family by not destructing our minds with ‘why no evacuation?’

  63. One wonders what kind of brains Zambians have. When our politicians are evacuated to South Africa we complain and when they are not, we complain all the more. When a common Zambian gets sick, he or she may not even be afforded the opportunity to be referred to the UTH from Kalingalinga clinic. Those of our well-to-do people, who supposedly have the money are the ones who must be evacuated at government expense. The poor who cannot afford to pay even UTH fees are the ones who must fed for themselves. The rich who are evacuated to S. Africa die the same way as those who are not evacuated. Why not just focus on improving the conditions of service in our health care facilities for the good of every Zambian?? Now after nearly 50 years of independence. we are still evacuating people!!!

  67. I now understand why majority Zambians want HH to take over leadership of this country .I have never come across a president who behaves like Sata is doing. It is drama all the time regardless of the occasion, be it funeral or celebrations.It is embarasing to associate oneself with such mediocre leadership to say the least. With this kind of leadership being exhibited by Sata, i can hope that HH continues to inspire the nation through exposing the incompetence of the Sata-led govt of gangsters.We will certainly need the inspiring leadership of HH not very long from now.
