The Lusaka high court has set August 10th 2012 as the judgment day for former MMD National Secretary Katele Kalumba and his co-accused. This is in a matter in which Katele Kalumba, former Access Financial Services directors Aaron Chungu and Faustin Kabwe and former Permanent secretary in the then Ministry of Finance and Economic Development Stella Chibanda had appealed against their five year sentence for corruption by the Lusaka magistrate`s court.

A panel of three High Court Judges among them Lusaka high court Judge in charge Jane Kabuka , Justice Nigel Mutuna and Judge Evans Hamaundu set 10th August 2012 as the judgment day because it is earliest date due to the commitments all the judges have.

In 2010, a Lusaka Magistrate Court convicted Dr Kalumba together with six of his co-accused on corruption charges. Lusaka High Court deputy director of court operations Edward Musona sitting as magistrate convicted Dr Kalumba together with his co-accused when he delivered judgment in the long running corruption trial.

The corruption charges relate to the payments made to US security companies Systems Innovation and Wilbain Incorporation involving US$20 million during the time he served as Finance minister in former president Fredrick Chiluba’s Government.

Then Lusaka High Court Deputy Director of Operations Edward Musona who sat as a Lusaka magistrate handed Dr. Kalumba a five-year sentence with hard labour after being found guilty on one count of corrupt practices by a public officer.

Ms. Chibanda was sentenced to 5 years simple imprisonment on 5 out of the 9 corruption charges while Access Financial Services Limited Directors Aaron Chungu and Faustin Kabwe were also jailed for 5 years each with hard labour.

Magistrate Musona said he had sentenced Kalumba to five years imprisonment with hard labour because he had not shown remorse, repentance and regret over his involvement in the matters before the court.

  1. foolish.. don’t even inform us coz we know they will be acquitted fuc..ki..ng judges.. when is August?? you are there just to creat time to be corrupt as well… what judgement can you make after 4 months as if DR. Katele is a fool who can be waiting for to sentence him to Chimbokaile.. ba fee colour.

  2. Only a common man who steals a bamba in shoprite can be jailed in zambia. Let alone the chinese who kill and rape our girls can never be jailed, ah what a corrupt country

  3. You *****s you made Zambia Like an animal farm because of corrupt Judiciary. If it was a commoner the Judgement day would have been 04/04/12.Also Looking at the panel of Judges what would one expect, obvious corrupt judgement!!!!!!

  4. come on thats not how to run a judiciary, why are they setting a date?

And check who the judge is , why not ask my mate Wood to do it?

  5. These fools have really taken us for granted, even simple imprisonment was an insult to them wen wat was involved were millions of dollars.. wait soon sunset will cover most of you quacks, no wonder the laptop sangoma has been having mouth diarrhea.

  6. Usually when a project or something of financial benefit crosses over from one govt to the next I hear the smug cry of ‘you can thank MMD for this!’ Where we at playas :) Who dropped the ball? Did we fail to lock up a bunch of innocent people or did we fail to lock up a bunch of guilty people? Excuse my confused ignorance. The most I heard of this was something to do with a magical laptop in a British paper which kinda obscured things :)

  7. I can’t wait for us to wake up from this nightmare … the last twenty (20) years have really been a nightmare, we moved so fast from a nation of thinkers to a nation of thieves. We need to get back to our basics, we need to be a nation of thinkers once more. That’s what happens when you elect a Commander In Thief – FTJ (Fred) the whole nation degenerates to that. I don’t envy the next few governments, they have a huge job ahead of them. Sometimes, I really feel like we were short-changed when LPM (Levy) passed away, by now we could have been way ahead of this mess that MCS (Mike) is dealing with now. RB (Rupiah) in between did us a dis-service as we now even have Son In Thief (Henry) on the run. Nothing to do with parties, thieves are just that no matter what party they come from.

    • Gentlemen, I would like to believe that the two of you are those thinkers I am referring to. I would to believe that what you have achieved was gainfully and rightfully acquired wherever you are domiciled today. I would to believe that you both agree with me about my assertions of yourselves, and if the answer is “yes”, I would like to believe that you are the thinkers I am referring to. Have a blessed day

  8. #1 Numbian (my dream girl, just waiting for you to grow), FYI Ba Katele baume, he is one of the most liked people in Luapula. Whenever he enters a pub, ninshi caweleketa. But Zambian-juju yena knows it, especially creating lightening “akalumba”. Not sure if he is named after that.

  9. I hope this PF Govt are not stealing too
stealing is like part of being politician in
Zambia, come on Goverment get down
to real development ,arresting people will not
bring development, but make Zambia look like
a persecution country and scare away investors

  10. I can see change coming to Zambia. The mess left by the previous GOVT getting cleaned.Though at a slow pace .Indeed better done than never.

  11. People don’t be naive. 7 million dollars of your money has just been stolen on the pretext of some donation to someones burial
. Remember this same government presented a budget with a shortfall that has to be met through borrowing
. So the question is which area of the budget has been sacrificed for this phoney donation? Why are the Malawian newspapers claiming that the oil has to be paid for and it is not free.? In Zambia we are been told that it is a gift from Mr Sata . May be it is indeed a personal gift looking at the way the minister of energy Mr Yaluma personally picked the transporters of the oil. This oilgate has legs, and don’t forget you head it from first.

  12. In this country justice for the rich is to be set free of any wrong doing and for the poor, just read Mmembe’s paper. fours for stealing gots in Chipata, ten years for stealing Cattle in Monze, two years for failing to pay for dry finish in Chilenge all these put to gether do not even come any where near USD 20K. What a shame to be poor in this country, no wonder the more money in the pocket scheme worked, because everyone needs that money in order to escape justice.

  13. No wonder Katele has been yapping against his own party. He thinks that this will help with his court case. Pa Zed.

  14. These Bemba thieves should just go in.  The Bembalisation of Zaqmbia over the last 20 years has made every Zambian worship money and be a potential thief.  Other ethnic groups who used to be laughed at “ukushishita” have woken up and have joined the monkeys in the maize field.  These crooks should go into Chimbokaila and please, dear cops, throw away the keys.

    • How can it be Bembalization when in the last 20 years there’s only been one Bemba president? Notice the first people to be thrown in the gallows for stealing were not even Bembas but easterners. Don’t be an empty can!

  15. There more thiefs in the pf govt than the govt of unip and mmd combined. Who has ever heard a country in the world which does not produce fuel donate such a precious commodity to another country. Kk, ftj, levy and rb never did this. Wait, u will see what corruption means in this govt

  16. No wonder this wizard has been betraying his party! Trying to win favours from PF. This whole corruption fight is a joke; as we speak, Miles and Mahtani are busy pulling off the biggest oil procurement scam in Zambia’s history. Watch this space.

  17. Zambians are mostly corrupt. Some of us have been swindled by our own relatives. The problem runs deep in our culture. It almost feels normal when you live in such a culture. There are very few Zambians I trust. I’m a Zambian myself, just in case you are wondering. It is a pity!

  18. ACTUALLY THIS ALLOWS TIME FOR KATELE TO USE HIS SCIENTIFIC COMPUTERS THAT WE ALL KNOW, THE MAN IS A NIGHT JET. WAIT AND SEE OO. HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN THE STORY. HE FLIES AT NIGHT WITHOUT A PLANE LOL. SO HE WILL FLY TO THE GUDGE AND CONFUSE HIM WITH JUJU. JUST WAIT. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME KATELE FACING SUCH COURT MATERS. HE IS JUST THE OTHER MUSHALA IN ZAMBIA. JUST LIKE PRESIDENT SATA, WHO EVER DIFFERES WITH SATA DIES, MWANAWASA DIFFERED WITH SATA HE DIED, KUNDA SAME. MBINGU SAME AND MANY OTHERS, LIKE NAMAKANDO IN MONGU DIED. SO WE HAVE A NITE JET IN STATE HOUSE JUST LIKE KATELE.

  19. Let Nevers run MMD mwe, We shall at least have a different face to look at not Wizards and great grand parents.

  20. They need to ask him which judge he wants just like us at our newspaper we want our mate wood to be doing our judgements.
