The students Union at the Copperbelt University CBU has welcomed plans to transform the current bursary scheme in institutions of higher education into loans.
COBUSU President Thompson Luzendi has told ZNBC News that this will benefit all students, unlike in the past when only those doing degree courses were considered for bursary.
Previously students pursuing diploma courses left out of the scheme.
But some students feel it is not a good idea because it will restrict those that may wish to work outside the country.
Mundia Sililo wants government to clearly state how the loan facility will work for students who graduate but don’t get employment immediately.
And Education Deputy Minister David Mabumba says the government is consulting with stakeholders to transform the bursary scheme into a loan facility.
Mr. Mabumba says beneficiaries of the loan will either work for it or pay back after completing their studies.

There we go again! From the very beginning the bursary scheme has been a form of a loan. I remember signing the agreement form pledging to work for the government for two years as a way of paying back. The sad truth is that the government does not have jobs to give to the graduates to enable them pay back their loans!Â
I miss those days pa monk square… I thought this loan scheme was started way back in 2008. am impressed they have also considered those doing diploma for the loan scheme, its been long over due
“Viva student power”
I remember in the 90’s when I was at unza bursary scheme (BC) was consindered a loan given to students, but as govt cannot provide jobs for graduates most of them have left the country for greener pastures. I dont see how it will be different considering that most graguates now are not employed. Its just a matter of terminology changing from scheme to loan, but it has always been considered a loan.
But who says you should pay before you get a job? Students of this era? Awe mwe. You need a job and an income to pay back. You kids, what you need is to team up and create your own companies when you graduate. All you need to do is to rally behind the government or put pressure on them to make finance easily accessible and you are home and dry. How doe a graduate in food technology and science say I need a job with all that food going to waste in Zambia?
if fred mmembe and the linking crew cant payback taxpayers that was loaned to them, why should you, dont worry about paying back just get them grades. you will appreciate kusogolo! dont let them cheat you @ madegree have no value you may have it rough for a while but there is owayz a bright day
I will be very good. It is not only Diploma students who are left out on BC but also Degree persuing students. This current system brooded corruption where you needed to part away with K2.5million just to be put the BC list. Genuine in need students are usually left out.
