United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema’s special advisor Douglas Siakalima has implored party members to pray for his safety .
Addressing dozens of defectors at the party secretariat in Lusaka this morning, Mr. Siakalima claimed that ruthless characters are after the UPND leader’s life.
He said there is need to seek divine intervention to safeguard the Mr. Hichilema’s life.
And Mr. Siakalima has warned police officers who brutalized UPN youths will be followed up until they are exposed.
He said the party will not rest until perpetrators of police brutality face the law and further cautioned Lusaka province police commissioner Charity Katanga against invoking violence.
And about 1500 PF and MMD members in Lusaka province have defected to the opposition UPND.
In welcoming new members, UPND secretary general Winston Chibwe accused President Michael Sata of having offered most jobs in government to his relatives.
Mr. Chibwe called on members to reject President Sata in every election as he has failed to live up to people’s expectations.
Meanwhile, William Banda has vowed to dismantle the popularity of the PF in Lusaka province stating that the defections being witnessed are not genuine.

I am praying for HH so that God can help him realize to give respect and give honor elders. I am also praying that HH should ask for forgiveness. He should know that he is not the only leader of opposition political party and in fact his is the third person counting the number of his supporters in parliament. We don’t need leaders who are bitter and have no vision for their political party. How do you expect to be the next leader of Zambia when in fact you have failed to reach out for more members beyond Southern Province? HH’s inability to engage the electorate in-between elections by touring the countryside is another of his weaknesses. This is typical of our politicians. To my Tonga friends, the reference earlier to the Bemba speaking provinces does not suggest my tribal inclinations but purely considering demographics, as numbers are important in politics. This constituency is about 43% of Zambia’s pop., which alone can get you the presidency if there are many contestants, and a first past the post system. So integration and inclusiveness is vital. THIS GOES FOR PF AS WELL.

Point 1: UPND executive is only made up of 35% Tongas, the rest like prof Chirwa are from other provinces. Point 2: UPND executive is not appointed by HH but elected at a convention unlike Sata’s cabinet & diplomatic postings which is 70% bemba. If u want to give lecturers on tribalism start with Sata. Point 3: Mmembe is a tribal hater who has always hated UPND even when it was under Mazoka. Nothing HH/UPND can do to receive favourable coverage from the Post. Point 4: HH campaigns in all province and it is not up to him to decide to be covered by the main media, they chose who they want to cover. Bembas have always voted against UPND.
Within a month two key opposition leaders have indicated some threats against their lives. This is something that should be taken seriously. This is the first time in Zambia’s history that two opposition leaders are voicing concern about their lives. Well meaning Zambians should speak out against these threats. Sata should be warned that if anything happens to those leaders Zambia will be on fire and he will be accountable. His advisers should refresh his mind about the happenings in Rwanda. I know most people have this believe that disastors only happen to their neighbours and not them. Sata and Mmembe be advised to provide a conducive environment for the opposition parties to operate freely without fear.
