Chief Monze has appealed to President Michael Sata to recognize him as Paramount chief of the Tonga speaking people of Southern Province.

Speaking during this year’s Lwiindi Gonde Traditional ceremony in Monze, the chief said he was disappointed that previous governments had failed to recognize him as Paramount chief.

He told Chiefs and Traditional Affairs Deputy Minister Berlina Kawandami who officiated at the ceremony that all the chiefs in the province have acknowledged him as Paramount chief.

The traditional leader said previous governments had assured him of giving him the status of Paramount chief but nothing has come to fruition.

Chief Monze said it was ironical that while all the chiefs in the province had given him this recognition, Government was in different and still regard him as an ordinary chief.

Chief Monze said past successive governments had failed the Tonga people by refusing to respect their wishes to have him installed as Paramount chief.

And Chairperson for the Lwiindi Gonde Traditional ceremony Patrick Mweemba asked Chiefs and the Deputy Minister to remind government to provide the K100 million the previous MMD government had promised the organizing committee in 2011.

Mr Mweemba said the funds were meant for the construction of permanent structures at the Gonde main arena.

He said the organizing committee has been waiting since last year’s Lwiindi Gonde ceremony.

He also requested government to begin sending officers from the ministry of chiefs and traditional affairs to help in the preparations for the ceremony.

Mr Mweemba said the current situation in which these officers were only seen on the actual day of the ceremony was unhealthy.

He however, said the move by the PF government to establish a ministry to handle chiefs and traditional affairs was a step in the right direction.

Each year Chief Monze leads his community in the annual Lwiindi ceremony, traditionally held to give thanks for the first harvest of the year.

This year’s Lwiindi ceremony was devoid of politics as most politicians including the ceremony Patron Hakainde Hichilema did not attend.

  1. Inonge could not be a.rsed to attend the ceremony and sent her deputy instead. What exactly does she do?

  2. What doez it take for someone to be recognized/installed az paramount chief? There sure must be reazonz why successive governments have not acted according Chief Monze’z will.

  3. Southern Province does not need a paramount chief and it is not true that chiefs in th sp are agreed that chief monze should be recognised as such.wait for the fallout.

    • Titles like Mulena Wa Malena, Mfumu Yama Mfumu, Inkosi Yama Nkosi, Inkosi Enkhulu etc were earned through conquest; through good deeds like uniting of people or even providing and protecting of people under one’s influence; or many other heroic actions. These were kings with kingdoms! The colonial masters demoted these to paramount chiefs so as not to have equal status as the european kings and queens.
The Tongas have never built a kingdom before. Some titles of paramountsy in Africa were bestored by colonial andlater post colonial governments for political interests.
So, what has Chief Monze done to believe he deserves the title?

  4. greediness has entered especially the so called chiefs of 21st century. chief nowaday are there not to serve people interest but themselves. there is less selflessness for their subjects. these people are always recieving tribute from poor people, envelopes from government officiallys and the monthly salary of 4.5 million kwacha per month. but still there are still crying like babies saying that there are suffuring. chief monze want more power. what benefit will it bring to the subjects. this will bring confusions from other tonga chiefs. this issue should just be left the way it is. otherwise it will divide people or cause rungles.

  5. Who said we are all Tongas as Bantu Botatwe?

    Yes for the Tongas only.
Ilas need their own Paramont Chief too. Lenges need theirs too.
Solis also need their Paramont Chiefs. Please we are not Tongas. Proud Ilas, Lenges, Solis.

  6. That is why he is not promoted, you can’t demand respect from people, respect yourself first. Thats why we say Tongas are in messy, in Bemba they say “ubufumu buchindika umwine”.

  7. We don’t need chiefs and chiefdoms in this century and they should be abolished altogether. The only tradition they are currently preserving is greedy and political prostitution.

  8. Chief Monze may as well learn to kneel before Ukwa the CNP if he were to achieve his dream of being a Paramount Chief of the Tongas.

  9. I support calls by Chief Monze to be recognized as Paramount Chief. Every tribe in Zambia need their own Paramount Chief. That title is not reserved for certain tribes only.

The problem in Zambia, we can not handle change, do not know when to change. Government need to develop a Change Management strategies to handle certain issues like the issue above.

Equality and Fairness are the hallmark of a great country. Every tribe in Zambia should be treated fairly and in an equal manner.

  10. There’re exactly what my youngster required and needed for his task outside the house. He adores the small situation he could just shared with up in the back pocket.
