Government has announced that a reputable media institution in the region has expressed interest in acquiring shares in one of the two state- owned newspapers the Times of Zambia and the Zambia Daily Mail.
Information, Broadcasting and Labour minister Fackson Shamenda however said that cabinet is yet to make a decision with regards the partial privatization of the two media institutions. Mr. Shamenda was speaking at Times Printpak Limited offices in Lusaka this morning when he inaugurated the newly appointed board of directors.
The minister has observed that Times Printpak has challenges in almost all areas of its operations and has urged the new board to work towards making the company financially viable. Mr. Shamenda stated that government as a major shareholder does not have sufficient resources to capitalize the Newspaper firm.
He added that among the many challenges that Times Printpak Limited is facing is that over 60% of its income is spent on Staff costs leaving less than 40 % for operational costs. The minister also expressed concern over the company’s huge debts to National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA) and other statutory bodies and obligations.
And Board Chairman Michael Musonda said the board will do its best to ensure that the many challenges that Times Printpak is facing are resolved. Mr. Musonda noted that the board of directors will ensure that it offers an effective oversight role for prudent use of the company’s resources.
QFM
Hope it is not the Post.
Hope its not Government who has told them that shares are up for grabs
This to me sounds just plain WRONG. Looks like the continuation of MMD part II. Why does the minister have to be pround to anounce that a reputable foreign media in the region wants to buy shares?
Obviously they are refereing to Prime Media the arm of NASPERS that own almost all the private media in South Africa and own DSTV and what not.
I think this is plain wrong. When are Zambians ever going to get empowered. Why do we keep selling our prime assets to foreigners and feel proud about that.
What is complex about running a newsspaper to require foreign investment? Don’t we have enough Zambians skilled to run this. If it is capital they need, what is the purpose of LuSE?
Let that reputable media house setup their own paper to compete with the POST and the rest.
You have got a point worth pursuing.
this is the same old shit that we need to over come. make the decision what are you waiting for. privatizing this institutions is in our interest though note in government’s. its the right thing to do. we have to reduce the size of government.its the main factor in reducing its expenditure. these media organisations have been eating our tax far too long and still they have never served our interest. let those will money run them at their expense not ours
#3 i think the door is open. zambians will definitely be given priority if government ever sales. i dont know if you know specifically about any zambians interested in running these print media.  i too would be glad to hear zambians are buying them. but its easier said than done. that is why these socialists in PF are back tracking. they want to hold on the companies but they don’t have money or expertise to run them at a profit. another NCZ,
You chaps why can you just say you are selling some shares??
Yes we want balanced news now not that rubbish the MMD gave us.
It’s about time others from the eight remaining provinces are given board appointments as well. You can’t have all high positions being 65% Bemba 20% eastern and the remaining 15 % for the rest of the nation. This has officially become stupid, I am a level headed person but with the trend; it shall be very hard to have a Bemba in office after Sata. Watch this space. Remember pride comes before a fall. Just because the rest of the nation let’s you have the office does not mean we are foolish no, we are in other fields of development engineering, medicine, commerce, finance and technology; soon we shall form a government of the eight provinces :).
This is good news.I mean these two papers have not saved the general public other than that of the govt or is politicians.Look The Post we all new of those days outclassed these two papers and was on top in terms of widely read newspaper when times and daily are the oldest. But as things are today you cant tell the difference between these three papers because they are on the side of the govt.Like this the govt cannot effectively work towards alleviating poverty.Look Levy worked hard because of the post and the economy was doing fine.RB was also on his toes trying to unbeat the checks from the post.
it should be the Post after all they share the same stories/headlines/pictures ie Kalusha losing house and picture of Sata in London
Looks like all the shares have already been sold, nothing for the interested Zambians. Bcoz even at short notice HH would still buy all the shares & this would mean fire for the current government, i know HH would soon start advocating for fairness in the reporting of these papers.
having money does not mean you are willing to buy anything
We don’t want to sell public assets for short-lived political interests. We want proper journalism, that does not suffer with biases.
So, forget this HH talk, that is not what this is about. As a matter of fact, HH could start his own news company, since he has the money?
@ Chipwa, i second you, could just be good news so that the paper should start serving the interest of the general public.
But why not just mention this reputable media by name? Don’t kubeba at work again!
Deja vu all over again, do you really need a foreigner to invest in these government papers? Has the Gov’t invited interests from the local business community? How is this different to the ZAMTEL or Finance Bank issue? What do a bunch of old politicians like Fackson & Chikwanda & Cabinet know about reputation of a foreign media company? Why should such important decisions be decided by politicians..especially media companies with the reach of Daily Mail and Times to rural areas. Â
The Zambian taxpayer has been spoon-feeding these papers for decades why can’t they be invited to bid for them first…this is one area where I admire our Russian and Chinese counterparts.
If a foreign company is interested in investing let them start from scratch!!Â
Let the Zambians run Times of Zambia and Daily Mail. A person from Evelyn Hone can run those institutions and please stop giving away everything! Why don’t we learn from past mistakes? Can Zambians fail to run ZCBC and NIEC stores? Niec stores were just repainted and new items put in! Them guys never even built any new infrastructure and they continued to remit money in thousands of dollars! Poor minisiters! Shame!
your facts here are questionable. ZCBC and NIEC where never run by zambians but by the zambian gov.Â
“He added that among the many challenges that Times Printpak Limited is facing is that over 60% of its income is spent on Staff costs leaving less than 40 % for operational costs.”
From this statement about high expenditure one can conclude that these politicians are readying this company to be handed over for a song to a foreign company that shares their political interests…when are we going to empower our Zambians…so what if HH buys it, if it keeps our politicians on their toes so be it as far as I’m concerned GRZ has no business in these papers.
Times Printpak Limited is a viable investment in the right hands (and not foreign hands) backed by Lean management principles, it is capable of being turned around especially in an information hungry market like Zambia.Â
This sounds like the Zamtel sale…
PF at work.
Stop being shrewd bwana minister and say it out; you are selling the two media houses, most likely Mm’embe interested and more than able to pay.
i think zambians willing to buy big companies like these are not readily available. because its not easy like buying bread. it has to be people interest in running these companies and who also believe they will make money. after being bought one has to replace equipment(all of it in this case), down size the workforce in the face of fierce unions/politicians and you will still need to battle the next group of politicians who will somehow will believe than printpak is worth some more than the ‘song’ it will be sold for.Â
@8 mwanawakitu
Its already done Tough matey being tribal does not do much for your tribe or province
What are you gonna do about it?
Stop being tribalist or damage your tribe and region in a genocidal province cos all the other 8 provinces are watching your crappy tribalism mate
zambia for sale very soon.
Single sourcing.
There is nothing wrong with the Times and Daily Mail as public media houses. What HAS ALWAYS been wrong is the hand picking of Boards of Directors by Ministers and the hand picking of management. What needs to be done, is that Parliament picks the Board of Directors and an Appointments committee interviews people to select as editorial managers. The boards should be answerable to Parliament. This is how it should be with ALL state owned enterprises.
THE SAINT
We are past that stage, that’s what the gov’t promised just look at what they did the hand picked yes men for the board!!
Can the fool please stay silent if he does not want to mention the so called credible investors.
Personal hygiene and tidyness is something that these CNP ministers seem to have thrown out through the window. Look at the president Sata himself’s shameful rotten teeth< just where do you find a head of state with teeth like that? Not even Mao Zedong's teeth were that rotten and for all we know he was senile in his last decade in power. Now, this Fackson and his Home Affairs minister Sakeni, why do they think it looks good to have such pathetic grey/white/black etc hairs around their jaws? Maybe they want their faces to look like the feminine genetalia, ati abo niba good milile in bed!
1. Rarely bathed. Even if he did, he disliked soap & water method. Preffered to be scrubbed with steaming towels.
2. Did not brush teeth. He preffered to rinse mouth with teas. Apparently, his teeth were pretty rotten.
3. Hated flush toilets. For years after he became China’s top leader, he defecated in the palace gardens. Finally Zhou Enlai was able to convince him to use an indoor bathroom
.
4. He often had an assortment of body lice and skin infections. He often just dropped his pants in public to scratch himself. Mao did manage to sleep with thousands of women though. He had huge orgies in his customized bed. He was very crude in his language, with an apparent obsession with farting. He also liked to make dirty jokes to shock people. His doctor was chiding him about hygiene when Mao informed him that when he was with girls ‘I wash my prick in their cunts’.
Just look at the similarities between our own CNP and Mao above, amazing sure! Though Zondwe would love to have bedded thousands of women too but zero! Ki pulu Sata masame bamu cancuzi machende.
You’re not very coherent, are you? Oh dear … if only you didn’t sleep through English classes, you’d be at least useful to the comments section of a website.
This will also end up like Zamtel mark my word! They are just crooks. Its yet another movie! They want someone to pump in money in these institutions and later grab all the shares and say we cannot sell public property. I end here!
All that these politicians know is privatising. And they say Zambians need to change mindset. There was a time timesprintpark was making money, and they should have seen the need to diversify their business when they saw their paper no longer on demand. Selling shares is very dull
thinking, especially for this newspaper!
Times of Zambia is bankrupt(according to watchdog) perhaps that’s why they want to auction some shares
Just come out in the open and say shares are up for grabs especially for M’membe and some tribe PF knows who, since all jobs are shared in that spirit too.
Iwe Shamenda, where is the minimum wage you promised us?You where supposed to announce last week according to what you uttered. You are a let down. One can even as like:”HOW DID THIS DECENT SATA PICK ON YOU:” YOU ARE ACTING COMPLETELY USELESS. Shame!
HH will buy them for fair coverage……Mmembe is broke with 14billion axe on his head.he cannot afford any single share.
