Lusaka street vendors given deadline to leave the street

Share

Lusaka Province Minister Gerry Chanda says the deadline for the removal of street vendors on Lusaka’s Cairo Road stands.

On Tuesday, 10th July, all vendors are supposed to stop selling their goods along the road or face the law.

Colonel Chanda says he will not hesitate to use law enforcement agencies to escort those who will not leave voluntarily.

He was speaking to ZNBC News in an interview in Lusaka on Sunday.

Colonel Chanda says the measure is aimed at restoring sanity in the main business area.

  1. Let them go. Justifying street vending as a means of survival is the same as justifying theft. We need peace on the streets as we move around.

  2. Why only Cairo Raod. Does it mean the other roads have been legalised? Scared of loosing popularity and votes…

  3. What about the filter lanes on lumumba road we have failed to drive through its full of tomato and salaula vendors

  4. chimbwi-no-plan, the president says one thing and contributes to bringing cholera to the very people he is supposed to be leading…and now the city council is saying another thing. mixed messages. what type of people make up PF kansi? do they even any little brains in their heads?

  5. First of all may I say that this is a welcome and supported move by I am sure many residents of Lusaka even though the street vendors themselves may not be in favor.
The question is how do we ensure that the street vendors continue to earn an income without their current trading place? I propose that we modernize suburban and compounds markets in and around Lusaka suburbans and Compounds so that the street vendors can have a designated place to sell there items. (Some of these markets where built in Kuanda and Chiluba era). This can be done through PPP projects and preferably through small support group organisations e.g. Women Groups. Its time that as a country we take care of our own and channel ourselves to be developmental oriented.

  6. PLZ REMOVE THEM FROM FROM EVERY CORNER OF LUSAKA ANT ONLY CAIRO ROAD AND FREEDOM WAY BECAUSE LUMUMBA ROAD, MUMBWA, ARE ALSO BIGGER PROBLM WITHES VENDORS.THE POLICE SHOULD BE GIVE FULL POWER TO REVOME THEM BECAUSE WITHOUT EXECSSIVE FORCE THEY WOULD RETURN BACK IN HOURS. AND COUNTINE BUSINEE AS IF NOTHING HAD HAPPENED THE IG MUST BE PRESENT WITH HIS OFFICERS WHEN GOING THROUGH THE CLEAN UP OPERATIONS

  7. Has Gerry Chanda read the law or its kaponya rule which is working? The president is the one who gave a directive that people can trade from the streets and by law no one can reverse the situation apart from the president himself or another president who will come into power, now why should Chanda disobey what his boss said or could it be that sata has realised that people are using shake-shake packs as toilets since they are no toilets in the streets and that by law were people are trading, toilets must be available.Shame on you Pf.

  8. This sanity initiative should be extended to other towns like Mazabuka. This little town was almost the cleanest town, now this vending business is making the town look like it’s part of the chaos of Lusaka.

  9. They want to bring sanity to cairo road.how about the rest of the country. What sort of president legalises street vending

  10. I sense trouble, trouble (in high pitched voice!).. those vendors have been trading on those roads for donkeys years and are very complacent; they now feel they have a right to be there. For someone to ask them to move now ha! Kaya.. Need popcorn to watch this!

Though on the other hand, its time to get our roads cleaned up. Too much dirt in the Streets. Its a shame to walk down Cairo Road.

  11. Just clean up the whole city. Stop all street vendors. But watch out for their reaction after all they voted for you guys.

  12. But where do you take them to? Remember you promised them jobs but you have created non. That’s their survival otherwise you guys in govt are in big problems with these people.
