Chirundu water blues unacceptable

Share

Chirundu District

A cross section of society in Chirundu district has complained of critical water shortages in the area.

Some residents talked to, disclosed to ZANIS that they are sick and tired of water rationing in the area a situation they described to been forcing them to walk long distances to fetch water from the crocodile infested Zambezi River.

And Chirundu MMD District Chairman Dennis Vlahakis has challenged the newly appointed Chirundu District Commissioner Maxwell Siamalimba to familiarize himself with some problems faced by the local people in the area

Meanwhile Former Chirundu Area Councilor Gift Chanda has appealed to the government to increase budgetary allocation to Chirundu district.

Mr Chanda told ZANIS in an interview this morning that government should invest a lot in water utility company in order to assist Southern Water and Sewerage Company (SWASCO) to improve on the water system which needs a complete overhaul.

He said it is embarrassing to stay without water at the border town when lots of revenue is being collected within the district.

Mr Chanda added that Chirundu is an economic hub of the country in terms of revenue collections and that it’s not acceptable for the people of Chirundu to continue complaining of water after 47 years of independence.

He said that today marks a third day of water blues in the area and most of the people are risking their lives by fetching untreated water from Zambezi River.

Efforts to get a comment from SWASCO agent in Chirundu proved futile as his cell phone was off by press time.

  1. THE ZAMBEZI FLOWS RIGHT UNDER YOUR NOSES. THIS IS A PROPER FAILED STATE. WHAT MORE THOSE WITHOUT A RIVER NEARBY?

  2. SWASCO has the worst and most pathetic services in water supply. Its not like this is happening for the 1st time.History is repeating itself. They are so reluctant and I feel they need competition as a wake up cal.Zambezi River is extremely dangerous,be it crocodiles or hippos.Something really needs to be done about it soonest

  3. The best life in Zambia is “peasant rural life”; because you can draw water as and when you need from a simple well. Unfortunately guys, urban living requires the use of “engineered services”. Anything engineered requires educated people to do it by designing, procuring and installing it. This can only be done if there is money to do it. So why are you crying when your successive governments have failed to follow this simple rule? Enjoy your urban life with rural services and that sucks!! Good luck guys

    • Well said , rural areas or villages are the best, they dont cry for water to be designed or engineered by Lusaka, all they do is just go fetch it, for those who want to live in Lusaka just to feel you are in the city or cities, its pathetic, you cant even have a decent bath or go to a toilet because water is rationed, electrical load sheding is also order of the day,why suffer yourselves, no one will bring these services to you, go get them yourselves or go to the village where life is simple and sweet, thats why each time I come to Zambia, I spend my vacations in the village where taking a dump is so eazy not in towns

    • But why are these companies called “Commercial” Water Utilities when they can not be independent? Why should it be the government to always propo these companies?

  4. Pa Zambia yalikosa. Even Luapula Water and Sewerage company is failing to pump water from Mweru to supply Nchelenge residents by the lake shore. Similarly they can’t reliably supply water to Samfyans from Bangweulu. Zambia is full of mediocre services. Yak! Pa Chirundu Border post area shuwa? That is an embarrassment. Ya shani kanshi mu Zambia?

  5. @Kibinda waba Kabwa, why are these companies called Commercial Water Utility companies if we must continue to expect government to prop them?

    • Right question addressed to a wrong person. They are commercial utulity firms; but properly run utility company cannever ask government for help as they can generate capacity to borrow based on their revenue projections. They can invest heavily; but do they? No they don’t. So ask them not me sir!

  6. Surely this is the worst run country on earth..people in Zambia lack commitment to duty! Zed niyamene yamene! Very soon we’ll be number one poorest country.

  7. Zambia is a perfect example of a truly banana republic. It has 40% of the water in the SADC region yet we have water shortages! The country has the potential to supply the whole of Africa with electricity but instead we have load-shedding! We have vast material resources but we still think we are poor. We have unlimited educated people to govern our country but instead we have frustrated them into escaping to the west. 50 years of independence and nothing to show for it! There’s something patently stupid and mickey mouse about the way we have mismanaged our country. This makes you wonder whether it was a wise move to have got rid of the colonialists and replace them with the clueless characters.

  8. Wait a minute…! wher` the hell should the complaint forwarded–Is it Lusaka Water or Southern Water. ???

  9. Thank you for every other magnificent article. The place else may just anybody get that kind of info in such an ideal method of writing? I’ve a presentation next week, and I’m at the look for such info.

  10. I notice that you are can be actually considering such a! Our company is planning to build my own ring online site and you also currently have reduced the problem by including great data files.
