GOVERNMENT has said rehabilitation works at the University of Zambia (UNZA), which would be used as the Games Village for the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa (SCSA) Zone Six Youth Games, will go ahead as scheduled on September 1.
Sports Minister Chishimba Kambwili said in an interview yesterday that the works at UNZA would not only benefit the athletes, who would be using the facilities during the Games that would run from December 4 to 16 in Lusaka, but students as well when the institution reopens.
Kambwili said it was unfortunate that the students were being used by some misguided politicians when the renovations once completed would benefit the students who have for a long time bemoaned the bad state of the institution.
The minister said the students should be reasonable as the works to be done at UNZA would be to their betterment and that Government would go ahead as scheduled on September 1 to close the institution to pave the way for works to start.
“These students have been crying for long time on the bad state of the institution and now that we have found money to rehabilitate their institution, they decided to protest. Actually, it just a handful of them because I have been in touch with the union leadership and they have assured me that they are in agreement and I shall address them this week,” he said.
Some UNZA students are protesting the closure of the institution, saying the move would disturb their curriculum complaining that they had already paid semester fees but they would not learn for six months due to the renovations and subsequent hosting of the Games.
Kambwili said preparations for the Games were on course and that associations have already started preparing their athletes whom he said were expected to go into camp soon.
Apart from UNZA, Government has already started works at the National Sports Development Centre (NASDEC) which will host boxing, netball and tennis with Sunset Stadium changing rooms to be extended.
Nkoloma Stadium would host the official opening and closing ceremonies, while other sports activities would be held at the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) in Lusaka.
A total of K3.4 billion has been aside under the sports development fund to help rehabilitate sports infrastructure ahead of the games.

Here we go again…..Pathetic Fools (PF)
aso right Mr. Minister!
Whats wrong with finding an alternative venue rather than closing the institution ??
Mr. This is the only chance those chaps who passed through leakage will have that dilapidated structure renovated.
good move !
ZNBC newswebsite for the 13th August quotes the minister of Education saying the exact opposite of toadface, wtf these yobs!
please ba LT a semester is four and half months naimwe, how can it be 6 months when a year has 12 months including official end of semester breaks. UNZA is xtremely terrible and i support govt on this move. Go to RUINS and you will know how bad that place is
A semester is an academic session lasting six months. Remember sem means half and ester is the year.
There will have to be a break one day or the other for these renovations which obviously don’t take a week to complete.
That time is sept 1 .
Didn’t hippo face listen to the news where cow face said renovation will be carried out without closing the eye sore of the university? Do these guys even meet as cabinet? Geeeeeez!
The money set aside for rehabilitation looks grossly INADEQUATE to me; considering the current state of the University. Think big bwana. Don’t embarrass Zambia.
Confused leadership. The minister of education has a different story from Kambwili. What is really going on this country?
@nyale, my answer to your question, UTTER CONFUSION!
Wonderful. Close and rehabilite. The institution looks like a farm owned by orphaned children.
Renovate Munali Secondary,NRDC and Evelyn Hone and leave Unza out that solves your issues…
PF……..pa ny o
PF …..munungu wahau
PF….munyelo wako sata
Any right thinking person should support the Government for this move. I supported Mwanawasa when he started renovating this filfil UNZA inorder to host the games , Mwanawasa also wanted to renovate Everlyn Hone College so that the renevated infrastructure would benefit the Students after the games. Now this government wants to do the same, this is an excellent idea and should be supported at all costs.
i am living and studying in europe,in my 6yrs of staying here i have never seen any student protesting, anywhere u wud go students face problems, be it academically, financially or politically.. here pipo are civilised they follow the right chanels wen solving problems, they do not tolerate lawlessness..why cant these UNZA chaps learn 4rom other countries,i think Zambian universities are the only universities were students still break cars in africa, even in ZIMBABWE and MALAWI students do not do that anymore. just shut it down and punish those stupid chaps, they shud learn to behave!
Imwe naiwe ikalanifye uko mwaba, govnt in Zambia understands and acts faster wen students protest. Didnt u hear of students protests in Britain wen fees were increased? Protest are actually very common in Europe than Africa when it comes to ordinary citizens. Its only that most citizens in Zambia are not fully learned no wonder they dont protest but students tend to challenge the govnt thru protests. Dont ask me to tell u the reason why u couldnt find a place at Unza or CBU, u know it my bro so dont provoke the pipo u left home. I hav been a student for 5yrs here so i know wat am saying mannnn!!!
i was at UNZA B4 u fool. go and ask DR NGWENGWE, DR CHIPETA, PLAKASH, MS JANE,MR MBEWE, MR DAKA AND DR BANDA they all know, mind u i passed thru UNZA I worked hard i got a scorlaship which u will never get in your life tym fool.
Why cant our govnt for once speak with one voice kanshi?????? Minister of Education says one thing and the Minister of sports and youth exploitation says another, why sure mwebantu?????????? The muv to rehabilitate UNZA is okay in my opinion but look at the meager funds involved, 3bln!!!!!!!!! Plus NASDEC and Nkoloma in the same 3bln???????????? Oh my PF then just leave Unza alone pantu ur not SERIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
K3.4billion?! Oh my foot! You guys you should be serious! FTJ’s funeral alone gobbled K5billion and you want to give K3b for sport facilities including UNZA? If you are not serious then leave UNZA alone until such a time when you will find the money and plan properly.
Ba PF mwalifakapula!
its good that unza is rehabilitated.
It is a shame that Zambian operations are devoid of maintenance. They always wait for things to break down and then start closing institutions to renovate them!? Very familiar picture that.
Can’t believe that some folks have jobs abroad with such awful malapropism and, poor spelling and writing skill!
Kambwili is once right on this one.
Weird indeed ! How do you close a University for the purpose of hosting games? Anyway PF is a bunch people with no basic instincts of leadership.
CNP is a moron,His so called “inner circle” is a bunch of pathetic minions hence we forever hear and read about conflicting statements.CNP is unstable too much weed in his knucklehead.Lord deliver us from this worthless junk of so called “rulers” ,AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Half a loaf is better than nothing. You advocate that funds are less but you forget that you can always start from somewhere !. In my view its a good start. Go ahead, and deal with those few who want to cause havock…there will always be some largads who will aonly appreciate when things are done cause they can not see the bigger picture now.
I wonder how my former room(Soweto 1 room 2) at Unza looks like nowadays.
More than 3/4 of UNZA students are the idea, and they were not protesting about the closing, they were protesting about th B.C which has been rumoured to be terrebly as low as K1.1 milion…viva B.C,viva 1st september…
