The Zambia Rainbow Coalition has advised the family of first Republican President Dr Kenneth Kaunda to consider withdrawing him from public life to avoid embarrassment.
Coalition President Cephas Phiri said Dr. Kaunda’s recent public statements have left a lot of questions in the minds of many concerned Zambians.
He said given his age, Dr. Kaunda is bound to say things that may divide the nation.
Mr. Phiri said the former President is expected to play a unifying role and should not make statements that will attract harsh reactions from other quarters.
“It will be unfortunate if the Old man continues on this political route, he has done a lot of politics in his life time, he needs to rest.”
He urged Dr. Kaunda to emulate South African icon Nelson Mandela who has completely withdrawn from public engagements due to his old age.
Mr. Phiri said Dr. Kaunda is a well-respected statesman but feared that respect can easily be lost if he continues issuing divisive statements.
“At his age, he may say things that may come out wrongly, I mean the man is old and it would be to the benefit of his family to ask him to adopt a low profile. These many trips around the country and abroad are totally unnecessary. Let the old man enjoy his last days with his wife and great grandchildren,” Mr. Phiri added.
At a recent tour of Indeni Refinery Limited, Dr. Kaunda heaped praise on President Sata’s leadership style and attacked the MMD economic record.

Kaunda’s role in unifying tribal Zambia of the 60s cannot be under-estimated. The current leadership knows nothing about bringing different peoples together. In fighting the colonialists Kaunda and African nationalists of the day worked on the philosophy that united we stand divided we fall. Look at what happened to Congo which was succesfully divided by imperialists. It disintergrated into endless civil wars because after Lumumba it was ruled by people without a national philosophy.They only thought of pocketing national resources. Kaunda failed ecnomically but he brought the nation together

I thought just like everyone else here puking gabbage against the founding father, Dr Kaunda as a Zambian was entitled to his opinion. Why are we trying to shut up the old folks. Unless of course this is coming from people that were not raised by parents. Mandela has stopped appearing because he’s very old. Very challenging task for the family! The responsibility also falls on those who quote a very senior citizen who has no capacity to read the situation. People, we need to accept the fact the MMD economic record was a disaster. If it was good , we will not be faced with higher unemployment levels we are facing as a nation. We have a lost generation of youths roaming the streets after graduation from colleges and this guy from so called coalition pretends as if everything is cosy. He should point out the economic successes of the MMD to convince the people of what KK said instead of criticising without any concrete facts.

What Cephas Phiri is insinuating is that KK should stop active politicking because he, as the father of the national should not be seen to be insulted by people old enough to be his great grand children and grand children.
